  1. AHC: "Maginot Line was a Failure" does not become a Pop History Trope

I think one of the big things about WWII history I've learned from being on this forum is how much of an undeserved bad rep the Maginot Line gets. The assumption seems to be that the French intended the German offensive to crash against their defenses and were gobsmacked when they simply...
  2. AHC: The Battleship Stays Relevant

Remove all the turrets and replace them with VLS cells, maybe.
  3. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

So, was this a more decisive engagement than Jutland or just as frustratingly inconclusive?
  4. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

My question is, is Von Trapp involved in this battle?
  5. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

By the way, does the Entente already have access to supply lines to support the Serbians? I figure if the Entente controls the Dalmatian and Illyrian coast, they could credibly support the Serbians overland through Albania. Though I suppose doing it through Greece would be more practical.
  6. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

I just ask because there seems to be a much more credible 'soft underbelly' strategy brewing here compared to OTL. If the Entente plays their cards right diplomatically I think they have a very good chance at making a go of knocking Austria-Hungary out of the war in 1915. Still early going of...
  7. Operation Typhoon: September 1941

Completely naive opinion, but does taking Moscow in September, assuming that it could be done, really amount to a fait accompli for the Germans? Sure they could dig in for the inevitable Soviet counter offensive the following Spring, but I don't think it fundamentally ameliorates the supply line...
  8. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

So what is the endgame for these operations? Is there an actual credible path by which the Entente could threaten the Austrian interior from a landing in the Balkans? I also wonder how close Italy and Bulgaria are to joining the Entente.
  9. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

Sort of curious, was a major landing on the Adriatic coast seriously considered by the Entente before they decided on the Dardanelles campaign?
  10. A Blunted Sickle - Thread II

Curious, has there been any communication between the Entente and Stalin about the post-war situation of Eastern Europe? You mentioned before that the Polish Government-In-Exile has more pull here, and I doubt they'd be thrilled with letting the USSR keep Eastern Poland, or bring the rest of it...
  11. Eugenics, Nukes and an Avocado Pizza - A Sideways Party Run-down TL

I mean, IRL the concept of Free Love was developed before the concept of a Gay Identity, so it makes sense that given some kind of push an alternative to the nuclear family could develop earlier on.
  12. Why wasn't the Native Americans as advanced as the Europeans, and is there a way they could of been?

Might've mispoke, I basically just meant that Eurasian civilizations had a headstart on taking up a sedentary way of living.
  13. Why wasn't the Native Americans as advanced as the Europeans, and is there a way they could of been?

I think it's because the the first Americans didn't enter the continent until 10,000BC, by which time sedentary bronze age civilizations had already begun arising in Eurasia. There were plenty of advanced Iron Age civilizations in the Americas by the 1st Millenium AD, but by the time the...
  14. AHC: East Asian "Enlightenment"

Yeah, the idea that the Enlightenment just 'happened' out of nowhere is silly. They came about, simplifying here, because of Renaissance/Reformation values, which in turn came out of/were a reaction to Medieval Scholasticism, which in turn developed from Classical Greco-Roman Thought. I mean, I...
  15. WI: Sony purchased the rights to all Marvel Characters in 1998?

I don't think Cap had X-Men levels, but equating him to Thor is a bit much. I'd put Captain ahead of even Iron Man frankly; besides the Hulk he's clearly the most recognizable of the MCU characters before the movies.
  16. WI: Sony purchased the rights to all Marvel Characters in 1998?

Is Captain America really a 'C-List' hero though? I feel he's B-list at worst; I feel like him clocking Hitler is a bit of a pop culture icon. I'd say about the same or maybe even more relevant than the Fantastic Four.
  17. Beating a Dead Sea Mammal: How can a non-ASB Operation Sea Lion thread be created?

I kinda don't get the obsession with Sea Lion; it seems to me the thing Germany would really be angling for is political capitulation. A failed Dynamo allows Germany to use the captured BEF as a bargaining chip: peace and recognition of the German puppet states in exchange for the 250k or so...
  18. [In and Out of the Reich] General Discussion/Q&A Thread

Yeah, not to mention the 100,000+ that must be engaged in COIN in the Balkans and HOA.
  19. The Scramble for China

Aren't we missing the bigger problem, though, of why would the colonial powers even want a 'Scramble for Africa'-style colonial project in China? Africa had raw resources to be extracted for the Second Industrial Revolution; I thought stuff with China was less about law resources and more about...
  20. AHC: Brazil acquires a Pacific Coast

Was the Brazilian Empire in any position to invade Gran Colombia when they were in their war of independence? I dunno if there would be enough to make it last given the cultural differences though.
