  1. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

Yes, they invaded Luxembourg on 1 August, but using trains rather than teleports.
  2. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

As highlighted above, the declaration of war between Austria and Russia was one of the last to happen; both countries could mobilise without automatically going to war - IIRC this happened during one of the Balkan crises.
  3. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

Germany attacked effectively ON mobilisation, not after a 2 week delay where there is still a chance to defuse the situation. Germany is the outlier; Austria only declared war on Russia 5 days after Germany because of German pressure.
  4. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

Text of the Franco-Russian Alliance Military Convention https://wwi.lib.byu.edu/index.php/The_Franco-Russian_Alliance_Military_Convention It was a defensive alliance It did not commit to attack on mobilisation Incorrect - see above. Germany was the outlier where mobilisation meant war; other...
  5. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

And? Mobilisation is not an act of war.
  6. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

And not one mention of the Austrian annexation of Bosnia Herzegovina in 1908 and how that impacted the Balkans, Serbia and Austro-Russian relations.
  7. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

Austria only declares war on Russia on August 6th; German invasions in the West started on August 1st.
  8. Was Britain Right to Enter WWI?

The problem with that is Russia asks for it to be expanded to cover Austrian actions in Russian Poland.
  9. How many forces would the Germans have needed in France to defeat Overlord?

And remember 21st Panzer was in the perfect position on D-Day, counterattacked, suffered significant losses and achieved little.
  10. WI: Sweden Joins The Allies After D-Day?

Aberdeen to Gothenburg is barely over any land.

I'd prefer to have the German army more than 50km away from my main logistics centre, with a major river in the way. The lower Maas may be enough, but I'd prefer to have the Waal as well. The map looks very different with the Germans holding Breda.
  13. OP Marget Garden

German airfields will have large amounts of light flak; Dakotas at 500 feet or gliders will suffer heavy losses in a direct assault, and light infantry ground assault will be outgunned. Tanks in daylight with close air support to suppress heavy flak is the best option.
  14. OP Marget Garden

To win the war you almost certainly have to take Berlin; the shortest route to Berlin is north of the Ardennes on the north German plain. However FAAA was developing airborne plans to support US 1st and 3rd Armies both with breaching the West Wall and crossing the Rhine; however because of...

For those in the UK. Today Talking Pictures TV is showing: Theirs is The Glory - a 1946 re-enactment of the Battle of Arnhem with most of the cast from 1st Airborne Division. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theirs_Is_the_Glory
  16. OP Marget Garden

Oh yes they were :p https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Market_Garden_order_of_battle#British_I_Airborne_Corps The units transferred back from the Mediterranean were IIRC 7th Armoured Division, 50th and 51st Infantry Divisions. The only one included in XXX Corps was 50th Division whose...
  17. OP Marget Garden

I've not seen any plans for that, but assume it would be a normal assault river crossing as all surprise would have lost. XXX Corps had a very large bridging column attached, and 43rd Infantry Division had spent a huge amount of time preNormandy training for river crossings on the Thames.
  18. OP Marget Garden

IIRC 1 Parachute Brigade and 1 Airlanding Brigade did have bridge seizing experience from Sicily. I think you mean Urquhart; Horrocks commanded XXX Corps. IIRC the plan was that the bridge would be initially rushed by the Recce Squadron in armed jeeps; followed by 3 battalions on foot...
  19. OP Marget Garden

Yes, but... Days are much shorter than in June - 12 hours of daylight vs 16. D-day was chosen to include significant moonlight to help the operation; Market Garden had far less, ruling out a nighttime drop. XXX Corps delayed their attack until after the paradrop for 2 reasons - to avoid...
