Harold Godwinson stays away from Stamford Bridge

Don't forget that his brother Tostig was with Hardraada. He probably couldn't allow that one to roam the North. But from a purely military point of view, having his better equipped troops with him at Hastings, would almost certainly have spelled defeat for William. OTOH morale was high because...

AHC WI German deal with Belgium by 1914

Actually it was very likely. King Albert was of German descent and all in favour of letting the Germans pass through. Moreover, the continuous strife between the suppressed Flemings and the elitist Walloons could easily have led to such a thing, if the Germans had played their cards right.

The Maw: When The Lights of the World Went Out

Subscribed to this thread. Small thing; Amsterdam is in The Netherlands , not Belgium. Perhaps Antwerp would have been a better choice?

The Maw: When The Lights of the World Went Out

Very intrigued by this. Living only 40 clicks from Brussels even more so... You do know that the Belgian Air Force is nuclear capable?

WI The prophet Mohammed is killed early on?

Suppose he was killed in a Berber skirmish or the Eastern Roman Empire considered him dangerous much sooner and made a concerted attack? Would Islam still spread as it did? Is there a chance that the Romans and for example Sassanid Persians would band together temporarily to eradicate this new...

Spain Invaded by WAllies World War II

Actually the Salazar regime in Portugal was decidedly pro- German. An invasion of Spain by the Allies might have backfired.

    Cato's Cavalry

This thread is what actually brought me back to the AHDB. Fantastic work!

Why'd it take until the mid 19th centuary to adopt elongated bullets for firearms?

Obviously you're right generally speaking, but keep in mind that a well- tuned flintlock is at least as good as a percussion rifle/rifled musket, and that the ignition is actually faster. oddly enough a wheel-lock is faster still. In the military sense it is indeed unlikely.

    Sealion Naval Forces

Using the OTL tactics they did. Without those restrictions the reverse seems to be true.

    Sealion Naval Forces

No don't want to go that far. My knowledge is restrictred to air operations Seriously doubt the the naval portion of Sealion could have been carried out, but that last PC simulation gave the Luftwaffe almost complete air superiority- It might have scared the RN enough or not not: I leave that up...

    Sealion Naval Forces

Would it come as a surprise if I told you that in several simulations ( on 2 different PC platforms and one 'regular' paper/miniature wargaming campaign) the RAF has been neutralised to any practical extent 5 times? We have been playing over a period of 3,5 years - in fact we're still doing...

    Alternatives to Barbarossa

Take Malta at all costs. If possible Gibraltar too (with Spanish help?) The Spanish army is exhausted but it wouldn't take much to besiege the Rock. Once that is done the Germans can easily transfer 2 or perhaps even 3-4 extra divisions to North Africa. With airstrips in Malta the Luftwaffe will...

    Glossary of Sealion Threads

Absolutely correct Saproneth, I do realise that an aux cruiser is no match for even a CL. What the Kormoran incident showed was that given almost ideal circumstances an aux cruiser could severely damage a warship. Nothing more, nothing less. In 99% of the confrontations the auxilary cruiser...

    Glossary of Sealion Threads

Yes Michele it would indeed be a total waste of time because you keep bringing up OTL history/facts into an alternative history topic and use these to 'prove' that nothing else could have happened. Wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that in a desperate situation- which Seelowe was without a...

    He112 V10 vs Bf109E

I believe a better comparison would be the HE 100 vs the Bf 109. The He 112 wasn't a really good airplane, the -derivative- He 100 much superior to the Bf 109.

AHC WI France attacks Belguim WW1

It's a little more complicated than that. Belgium always is....:) Flanders might be more pro- German, or rather anti-French except for the bourgeoisie. Walloons will be mostly pro-French. King Albert I was of German descent (Saxe Coburg) and Queen Elisabeth was Bavarian, but the parliament was...

    Glossary of Sealion Threads

I've taken late 1940 as that seems the most 'popular' timeframe for an attempted Sealion. Mind you I said 'optimal availability' for the KM just to make it interesting but still plausible as some of the heavier units where either still repairing or just coming on-line. Adm. Scheer was refitted...

    Glossary of Sealion Threads

Now, this is a very interesting post: A gem amongst the often heavily opiniated ones I keep reading here. I think we can safely assume that the French vessels were adequately manned, the Dutch (of which not may personnel escaped to the UK) perhaps less so. No idea about the Polish vessels. The...

P&S: Where Would You Be In That Universe?

Obviously dead. At home in Antwerp (primary target) or with my unit in Germany (protecting nuclear facilities and airbases mostly) wouldn't have made much difference.
