AHC: *New York Post* stays liberal

As a younger, left-wing Australian, it's extremely bizarre (to the point of axiomatic refusal) to think of Murdoch media as being anything other than conservative-right. The papers will sometimes endorse Labor, but usually only at times when a Liberal/National government is at the end of its...

Es Geloybte Aretz - a Germanwank

The transistor as a concept had existed for about 20 years before Bell Labs got one working. But the program responsible for the materials used (high quality germanium crystal) was the result of WW2. It's likely even without a WW2 analogue that the silicon transistor would be developed...

I'd say that's a good flag for NAVAIR more than the Navy overall.

As an Aussie, I think you're reaching a bit. If anything, to me this flag represents an Australia that got conquered by Japan in alt-WW2. Take a look at the Japanese prefecture flag design, they only really have one element per flag.

Surely they would demobilise units as they were cycled out of active duty anyway? Then those who wished to stay on would, after their R&R concluded, spend a couple of weeks doing integration with their new unit.

AHC: Other Singapore style City States

As a guilty Aussie (we should've done more in the 70s) I want to believe, but Timor-Leste is only slightly less the arse end of nowhere than we are. Singapore is successful because so much seaborne trade goes through the Straits of Malacca.

That's not how an NIT works though? An NIT works by setting some threshold (say $35K/year) and a tax rate (say 35%) and then you either pay or get paid the rate times the difference between your income and the threshold. If you earned nothing, you'd get ($35K - 0) * 35% = $12250/year

hmm. Long term effects on climate should be... well, fewer Chinese, I guess, not that China has been a particularly significant per-capita contributor to global warming until the last two decades.

It's beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I would, perhaps, mirror it - so that the left/right matches the east/west - but that might look worse or have other heraldic implications...

You've gone too far (particularly in the east and south), that's what you've done. Kenya, Ethiopia & South Sudan aren't Middle Eastern; nor is India, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. Northern Africa is not necessarily Middle Eastern either, but they are often amalgamated together for various reasons.

The Ruins of an American Party System, Part Three: Revolution

It was explicitly founded as a Liberal party rather than a Conservative party (drawing very much on the British political tradition here). The conservatives went along for the ride and the battle for control of the party continues to this day. E: fixed a thing.
