    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

Whats the engine on this? Some kind of 6 cylinder radial? I like the old-school minimalist engine faring. In other news: My setting description has to wait for a bit longer, as my workplace just utterly drowned me in stuff to do.

The original Fantome ist such a beautiful plane, one of my alltime favourites! Its definitly in the top three of best Biplane fighter ever constructed and with some development might have actually taken that crown.

I actually prefer the army airforce system. For the Navy System I dislike the way the numbering is handled based on the manufacturer. I prefer an overall sequential numbering like the IJN (which is, somewhat ironically, otherwise very close the the USN system) used. Th writeup for my setting...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

Im currently mostly using either real planes (and ignoring that they would never have been designed in Setting, its not very hard AH), or "luft 46" esque Prototype/Paperplanes. The whole thing is for a tabletop roleplaying game and aims at a pulpy atmosphere with significant Sci-Fi/fantasy...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

I spend some time deciphering all the aircraft naming systems from WW2, as I find the topic kinda fascinating. The german system is one of the more complex ones with its sub-designations (especially once you get to stuff like Umbau- and Rüstsätze). I think my favourite System is either the USAAF...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

Jup, the "Ausführung" is realy more a thing of the Heer for tanks and vehicles. Edit: If we take your 335 floatplane as an example the shown version with all the problems would most likely be a C-0 pre production model (or maybe even a prototype, than it would be Do 335 V"number"). If the...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

The Do-335 has always been one of my favourite planes and I totally dig this version! I would totally love to see a 3-float version though.

Now that makes for a much better basis as a fighter for the Graf Zeppelin instead of the horrible 109 conversion.

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

Ignoring for a moment the problems with variable sweep in a 40s design, it might be really difficult to do wing root pulsejets if you have your sweep-change mechanism at the same place. I would recommend "Super-Lorin" style elevator mounted engines. Otherwise a cool, sleek looking contraption!

An another interesting one. With the stepped fuselage and the thing below it my first thought was something along the lines of the Ryan Fireball, a late war experimental mixed-propulsion fighter.

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

The R-2800 is actually not all that much larger and heavier than a BMW-801. Dry weight is 1073 kg vs. 1012 kg, Diameter is 1342 mm vs. 1290 mm and Length is 2068 mm vs. 2006 mm. Later model 801s even had comparable HP ratings to the Double Wasp, especially if the later was not turbocharged. If...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

AFAIK that was not a real "drilling" aircraft but rather three separate Bf 110, which made the whole affair rather dangerous with all the cables and coordination needed.

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

I know that its just a very rough sketch (still cool concept though, only criticism would be the overly large and rather cylindrical engine nacelles), but do you have a reason for the steeply stepped rear fuselage? The overall shape also seems to preclude the use of a conventional undercarriage...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

The P-39 variants varied quiet significantly in armament, which version are you talking about? The 37mm cannon is a notoriously unreliable weapon with very low muzzle velocity, the Hispano used later is a much better gun though. The rest of the armament consisted of various mixtures of .30 and...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

The Airacomet was realy not meant to be adventurous in the slightest. It was designed as a pure testbed aircraft for the jet engine technology, not as a proper combat aircraft. The USA were in the position were they could afford to act in this way, while the germans had to push or every possible...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

What exactly do you mean by that? In what way do you think the P-39 might have become like the Mig 15? The best dogfighter of its generation or its widespread adoption and very long use? The turbocharged P-39 was certainly a better plane than the version that got ultimately adopted, but I doubt...

    Alternate History Combat Aircraft

This looks strange from the side and I cant parse it properly. I would guess its a twin engine design, but then whats the second grey block on the engine nacelle and where do the nacelles end?

I really dig the "razorbacks" over bubble canopies in general and your plane is really beautifull @Uruk . What could be the american equivalent to the Homare engine? The double wasp is quite a bit bigger, but I dont know of a better fit.

    Was Barbarossa inevitable?

Im not an expert on this subject but I remember the winter war already showing the sovjets that their light tanks were inadequate even against the rather badly equiped Finns and that they needed more radios and better crew training, which they then implemented. The war also lead to a more...

    Was Barbarossa inevitable?

Im not sure if an absence of the winter war would change Hitlers decision, too much of it was grounded in ideology rather than rational thought. Its also interesting that germany drew precisely the wrong conclusions from the winter war, they did not see (or did not want so see) that the sovjets...
