  1. Alternate colonies we would like to suceed

Another idea I've always been fond of, Chinese colonies in the Americas. Even though from what I've read it's almost impossible to get them there, and even more to make them viable.
  2. Alternate colonies we would like to suceed

Of course, never not reform Byzantium.
  3. Alternate colonies we would like to suceed

I'd like that too. Feels like whenever the Greeks are mentioned in a timeline, it's A) Classical age timeline, B) They are conquered by someone, usually the ottomans or C) It's a "Byzantium survives" timeline. I'd like to see them stay independent, in a kingdom/republic of Greece, and go around...
  4. Alternate colonies we would like to suceed

Simple question. What is/are your favorite colonial ventures from otl that didn't succeed in the long run? Bonus points if you can convince someone to do a timeline about them being successful. My favorite is France Antarctique in Rio de Janeiro, which existed between 1555 and 1567, and had...
  5. Where Hearts Were Entertaining June: An English Brazil

Well isn't that ambitious? As another Brazilian who happens to have enjoyed both "Look to the West" and "Male Rising", I'll be looking forward to it.
  6. Where Hearts Were Entertaining June: An English Brazil

I was sad to see this end and I will be happy to see it come back.
  7. Socialism/Communism analogs in the 19th century or before

A modern Centralised State, principles of common ownership of land and participatory decision-making. I'd rather the example not be a religious order or something to that effect, but I won't reject anything with a religious background or the participation of religious figures.
  8. Socialism/Communism analogs in the 19th century or before

How early could a radically egalitarian ideology similar to socialism arise in history? I remember a Byzantium TL with something about a city-state (Thessalonica?) like city nominally under Constantinople's control but merely paying taxes and not much else, whose upper-class was purge and its...
  9. One Nation Under the Southern Cross - an alternate Brazil TL (updated 13/08)

Oops, didn't notice the "first" part, still, with the government so in line with slave-owning interests, I guess a coup would inevitably happen. You're right, parts of the world outside of the US and Europe are very underrepresented, I can think of very few timelines centered on South America...
  10. One Nation Under the Southern Cross - an alternate Brazil TL (updated 13/08)

Will there be any periods of dictatorial rule? Like with Vargas and the military? Or is this a better world where Brazil doesn't get a coup every few decades?
  11. One Nation Under the Southern Cross - an alternate Brazil TL (updated 13/08)

Great update, it isn't a Brazilian timeline if we don't A) become friends with Argentina or B) kick Argentina in the teeth. Funny that we are ''helping'' the Paraguayans this time. What's the current state of the Brazilian army?
  12. A More Personal Union

Very happy to see this timeline moving forward again. I think this was one of the first timelines I read.
  13. In light of all the sadness in Brazil, turn it into second richest country in the Americas

I didn't say there weren't people of all races in all sorts of bad or good situations, only that the rates are disproportional. Oligarchs and established elites have indeed been a problem, probably the biggest as far as I'm concerned, elites don't sustain themselves vary comfortably without...
  14. In light of all the sadness in Brazil, turn it into second richest country in the Americas

I woudn't exactly say Brazil managed to integrate afro-brazilian population, I mean, there was no segregation but things like poverty, police violence and a lack of representation still affect them disproportionately, even today.
  15. One Nation Under the Southern Cross - an alternate Brazil TL (updated 13/08)

Portugal is really asking for it. I know, let's go there and make Portugal OUR colony. XD But speaking seriously, the updates were great, and the war of independence awesome. Just as a curiosity, was there equivalent to "Maria Quitéria" in this War of Independence?
  16. AHC: Brazil, the southern Great Power

I think the keys to it are: Army reform, especially when it comes to recruitment, and government logistic and infrastructure. The recruitment system composed of a network of patron-client relationships between the State, the plantation class, and the free poor. These well-established (and in...
  17. AHC: Brazil, the southern Great Power

The challenge is to have Brazil: 1)Remain a monarchy, or at least be a stable republic. That mean no coups, dictatorships or anything similar. 2)Don't screw the USA for the sake of making it easier, Brazil isn't supposed to be a superpower and the purpose of this challenge is for Brazil to be...
  18. One Nation Under the Southern Cross - an alternate Brazil TL (updated 13/08)

I´m glad to be here. I´m wondering... where do you to take this? Do you plan for Brazil to be a regional power, stronger than otl but not by much or is it going to be a great power? And speaking of that, is immigration going to be a larger factor than it was otl?
  19. One Nation Under the Southern Cross - an alternate Brazil TL (updated 13/08)

What's this? A Brazilian-centric timeline? Count me in! It's always nice to see a tl focusing on my country, and South America in general is very underrepresented in the forum. I'll be accompanying this eagerly! I'm sad to see Brazil won't be an empire, but a functional republic is pretty...
