  1. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

The next updates will be on England and the Ottoman Empire. This will wrap up "Part 1" so to speak (roughly up until 1560). This has seen the slow spread and impact of butterflies and laying the ground work for Part 2 c.1560-1590 aka Sh*t hits the fan. Stay tuned.
  2. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

They will have other things to worry about.
  3. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Yes the changes are really starting to come into their own now. Very different future for Scandinavia. Catholicism has over OTL gained England and Denmark (at least for the time being). So perhaps in a cosmic sense it will balance out.. Perhaps. Glad you enjoyed it! Denmark and Sweden will...
  4. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir
Threadmarks: #10 Denmark and Sweden 1530-1560

In accordance with my views on butterflies and to avoid a Scandinavian flame war in the comments ;) consider all events before 1530 (unless otherwise stated) to have proceeded OTL. Also special thanks to @Bastiram for help on this chapter. Reformation and Restoration: Denmark and Sweden...
  5. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Play nice or I'll have Norway conquer both of you
  6. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

The next update will be on Denmark/Sweden and then England again. These forty years after the POD (so 1520-1560) are all about setting the stage for the massive events in the second half of this century. So stay tuned.
  7. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Well he nominally owes allegiance to his older brother in Spain as is usually the case for cadet branches. Plus he is a Duke not a King like Philip. Also all HRE members (like Burgundy) in theory owe allegiance to the Emperor but this is rather arbitrary at this point. Technically Frederick...
  8. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

I agree some form of Dutch Revolt is inevitable at this point. But it will not be the same as OTL. Not saying it fails. Just it will be different.
  9. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed D@L (which I really need to wrap up at some point). That was my first TL and I think you can really see the change in quality as I went on with it. Hopefully this one is more consistent. And yes they will evolve into three separate (though linked) realms. Charles III...
  10. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir
Threadmarks: #9 Charles V and Spain

Plus Ultra: Charles V and Spain (1520-1560) No monarch would perhaps signify the Habsburg policy of expansion by marriage better than Charles (I of Spain and the V in Germany). By virtue of parents and grandparents and the random fate of European Dynasticism, Charles would end up inheriting a...
  11. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

I think they would yes (unless they sought do directly challenge them), this is the assumption I am working under. And indeed they were, this has been butterflied.
  12. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

I like this idea of Ihlas Tondinas. From what I can gather Portuguese colonialism of the islands will likely be "lighter" than Spain's and be more a pattern of establishing bases and trading/vassalizing the native states rather than conquering them.
  13. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir
    Threadmarks: #8 Portugal 1520-1560

Portugal time. Only a few major changes from OTL. Bigger update on Spain/Habsburgs to come. Also update rate will increase now fingers crossed. Empire and Exploration: Portugal (1520-1550) Whilst France and Spain competed and battled for dominance in Western Europe and Germany was aflame with...
  14. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Agreed, I want to do one. Hard to find a good base map of this period that is easily editable (if anyone knows of one please let me know) But regardless I will get a map up when I do the Spain/Habsburg update coming up.
  15. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

    James V of Scotland
  16. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Yup expect big changes in that region from OTL. He's marrying a Danish princess. England will then have dynastic links to Scotland, Spain, Portugal and Denmark.
  17. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Very true. Plus by doing some alternate marriages, and having people die at convenient (or inconvenient) times you can have all sorts of alternate dynastic unions and wars of succession. Which we are building towards..
  18. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Hardest part about writing in this period is all the damn dynastic links etc. I've got spreadsheets just on real and fictional marriages and children. I'm toying with having a two hundred year early French Revolution and have them just guillotine all of Europe's royalty.
  19. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir

Well I own't confirm the outcome yet but this is indeed the ground work for my version of the French Wars of Religion Yup it's just a surrendering of claims to any further Burgundian territory. Just a move by Charles V to make it clear that only the Habsburgs are the true heirs to the...
  20. A Son of Aragon - Henry VIII's Catholic Heir
    Threadmarks: #7 France 1520-1545

This was originally supposed to be a post on France, Portugal and Spain but whilst writing it it became obvious they would be better suited as separate posts. So here we go. Welcome back. New Horizons & Old Challenges: France 1520-1545 Francis I’s reign is one of the most important in the...
