Greek Somaliland? Nice map, certainly different from most other 19th century ones here.

My thoughts exactly. Awesome map yet again :)

Thank you :) Unfortunately, my story-writing skills are abysmal, so I wouldn't want to ruin that world. If anyone else wants to do it - go ahead.

*Does a short happy dance* I won! :D Congratulations to all the other participants, especially those honourably mentioned. Great maps all :)

Since Round III of the Map Contest has now finished, and i believe far more people are viewing the Map Thread rather than the Map Contest threads, I'll repost my submission here: Internal info The following is an attempt at reconstructing an old map depicting the Halifaxias. The original...

I agree with the previous praise. And yes, I would like another :)

Ah, I see. I didn't know that. However, if we consider butterflies, chances are that Elizabeth will not be known as that, or that she won't even be the Queen of England ;)

I would prefer it to have more contrast between country colours, so that the borders are easier to see. Also I think the map would benefit from somewhat more text. The text right now is not all that well placed, and the sizes could differ somewhat more.

Thank you, Master Highlander :) Now that the round is over, I would like to congratulate all the participants for their great maps. If it were for me, I would be hard pressed to choose between Guderian Beard's and Sovereign's entries, although there are many awesome others as well :)

It seems strange that in such a different world, quite a few names are exactly the same as in OTL. Were the possible names for colonies in such a short supply that there would always be one named "Virginia" and one named "Florida"? Did all Europeans have the exact same brains when it came to...
  11. Map Contest IV: Round III

Internal info The following is an attempt at reconstructing an old map depicting the Halifaxias. The original, made in Kent, is dated middle 17th century. It was in an extremely poor shape, so a copy of it was made in the early 21st century, keeping the style of the original and in general...
  12. Alternate Santas

In Russia and other Soviet countries, during Soviet times, a "Dyed Moroz" ("Old Man Frost") was popularised as an alternative to a religious figure. He was just like Santa or the earlier Grandfather Christmas, but wore a light-blue robe with stars or snowflakes on it. He was usually accompanied...

Dam you, Krall, why do you have to make such an awesome map? And so quickly even?.. :D *Goes back to drawing board*

I love the alternate percent sign.
  15. Bunk Theories

While there definitely was no Big-bang theory in 1900, there weren't many others either. Cosmology as a science did not exist back then. At that time, people still did not know about wave-particle duality (a debate between the two propositions was out, as scientists thought the two are...

Congratulations to the winner and others mentioned! :)

I echo Dutchie's statement - the maps are great! Myself, I would be hard pressed to choose between Scarecrow's and Ampersand's entries, if i were to judge.

Thank you :) The south German states did not join Prussia because Prussia was beaten by France in a war and thus lost influence in the south (the war was far earlier than OTL's Franco-Prussian war, so France still had the upper hand). Then Prussia decisively beat Denmark and annexed it (this is...

The PoD was that in 1812, a group of Lithuanian (or Grand-Duchy-of-Lithuanian) noblemen succeeded in convincing the Russian Tsar to grant Lithuania autonomy. All the territory that was part of GDL in 1773-1793 (between the First and Second partitions) and now belonged to Russia was to become the...

The Iberian Union is a country formed by a rather ragtag group of Basque nationalists, communists and som disgruntled nobles in the very end of the 19th century. The main reason for it sticking together as a country was the threat of Spain reclaiming its lands. The secondary reason were rather...
