  1. WI: Free Italy - a.k.a. Kingdom of Italy in exile as an Allied nation

Man the mountain fortress, hunker down, bleed the germans. WWI Austria in reverse...
  2. WI: Free Italy - a.k.a. Kingdom of Italy in exile as an Allied nation

A german invasion of Italy would be a very hard thing indeed. The only access points are a small section on France's south, or from Austria. Both of which are mainly moutain terrain. WWI showed what figthing there would mean. Italy would be on the defensive (and I'd wonder what forts they sill...
  3. Air and Space Photos from Alternate Worlds.

Yeah. The whole tone of the events show that this project was a rush job, so I wouldn't be suprised if the simply grabbed components from everyting they could, up to and including canibalizing current US and russian ships.
  4. WI: Free Italy - a.k.a. Kingdom of Italy in exile as an Allied nation

I don't know if this has ever been discussed: with a neutral Italy, would Germany feel the to expand control over France, to at least try to cripple the UK's suply line from Asia? Even Hitler can't avoid recognizing the boost to the UK that free use of the Suez Canal means. The only realistic...
  5. WI: Free Italy - a.k.a. Kingdom of Italy in exile as an Allied nation

Sounds like a good start. Is Italy actually going to fight against Germany, then? But it's still extremely unprepared...
  6. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

I thought SUBROC, like the french Malafon and the asutralian Ikara, was killed by larger helicopers carrying torpedoes?
  7. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

And my point is that the LCS is not a low-cost ship, far from it. The program might have started as such, but it evolved into an expensive monstrosity that was nearly useless as built, and extra money now has to be spent to make it usefull.
  8. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

Yeah, well... since the LCS can't do anything without being heavily reinforced itself...
  9. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

The solution is coming, and it's a new frigate. A proper frigate.
  10. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

Nice... someone should warn the RN of these...
  11. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

... are those norwegian missiles?! There goes the stealth profile...
  12. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

The LCS doesn't carry SSMs, it carries Hellfires, if any. For others it has to run home and get help... as for MICA, it has almost twice the max range of the RAM. More important than this, that cost is for ships that are fully ready to work and to carry out all their missions, at any moment...
  13. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

I think the USN wanted a LCS that was a "jack of all trades" and "master of all". But cheap. And small. And "wth-why" fast. And stealthy- And auttomated. Simple.
  14. Fictional inventory of modern airforces

...1938? Ok I thought we were starting earlier in the 1930s. My own country (Portugal) tried to get either Hurricanes or Spits from the UK around that time, but all we got were Gladiators... cause politics...
  15. Fictional inventory of modern airforces

Considering the Uk vs Ireland politics of the 1930s, wouldn't it be more realistic to get some french or US-built aircraft, at least for fighters? Matching the Gladiator's age, Ireland could go for the Boeing P-26 (or it's unsold sucessor the P-29); from France, the Dewoitine D.500. Or even the...
  16. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

Don't forget the stupid "must do 40knt!!!!!" requirement...
  17. Naval Equipment that should and shouldn't have entered service

Afaik, everyone started the war with destroyers designed mainly for fleet work, and everyone had severely understimated how much light/medium AA was needed. The Tribals were a little short, but so were the french Chacal or Le Hardi, many of the germans and the US pre-1941 models. The Tribals...
