  1. Germany builds another battleship instead of Graf Zeppelin

The number of guns is not everything. There is also a matter of image. If you are an authoritarian leader would you rather have four big ships or three very big ships? On the subject of repairs, why would the Germans in the late thirties take into consideration French repaiir facilities when...
  2. Germany builds another battleship instead of Graf Zeppelin

Thanks for this. It immediately raised one question in my mind. Any reason why the Germans could not build another yard or expand any existing one to give themselves an extra slipway?
  3. Germany builds another battleship instead of Graf Zeppelin

Emphasis on the tanks. Germany can only produce some much armour plate and if you put it on a battleship you get less and/or smaller panzers. Britian had the oppsite problem in that the navy not the army had first dibs on amour plate.
  4. What could have been some alternate Cradles of Civilization?

Re: Reindeer/caribou. Given that reindeer were domesticasted after the Bering strait became sea, transfer of the "technology" to the New World is going to be less straightfoward than adoption of horses by civilisations not from Central Asia. No reason though why they could not have been...
  5. How would Native societies develop if they had horses and camels?

Sorry, but disagree with this. . Whilst in the Near East sheep and goats may have been domesticated before cattle it is equally possible that they were not. Water buffalos and yaks do not appear to have been domesticated by civilsations with smaller herbivores already domesticated.
  6. How would Native societies develop if they had horses and camels?

Having domestic animals is irrelevant to acquiring ocean going technology. The Polynesians colonised the Pacific islands without a single cow, buffalo, yak etc in sight.
  7. What could have been some alternate Cradles of Civilization?

Once the farmers from the Near East start flooding out into Europe they are going to quickly overrun the natives for the Danube, as they did in OTL. The Po valley and Rhone would and did take a bit longer, but became doomed. For an alternative civilisation to get off the ground having suitable...
  8. A couple WIs regarding the Boxer Rebellion

    1) If the Qing attempted to support the Philippine Republic then the USN would sink their ships and cut off any land forces. Besides, why would the Qing want to pick a fight with the USA.? They have already have beefs with the British Empire, Japan and Russia who were already chipping at the...
  9. Effects of a non-Traitor Benedict Arnold?

In Crossroads of Destiny by H Beam Piper Benedict Arnold became the leader of the American army after Washington was shot dead by a sniper. He went on to become the first President of the USA. No explanation though how he achieved it.
  10. Axis raid on British Guyana WW2

Given the planning that the Germans would need for such an operation wouldn't the British get a tip off from their code crackers?
  11. Some WW1/WW2 What ifs

That sort of happens in Grey Tide in the East by Heller because the Germans cancel the attack on Belgium and drive east. The result is that the German Navy is let loose on the French Navy with obvious results. The problem with not getting involved until 1917 or 1918 is that Russia will be out...
  12. A Thousand Stars: Christopher Marlowe Survives

If Ruled Britannia by Turtledove is a guide Marlowe will a) still be a Jack the Lad, b) get himself killed and b) leach off the great William Shakespeare. :)
  13. Other Possible Norman States

They did in 1146-48 but got pushed out in 1159-60. When invading an area the Normans usually had a manpower problem hence the use of castles as force multipliers. However, the latter did not stop larger neighbours from pushing them out. The most successful Normal kingdom was England because...
  14. Other Possible Norman States

A little difficult on OTL as it was boxed in between Edessa to the east, the Byzantine Empire to the north and Tripoli to the south. There is a possible PoD though. At one point Tancred nephew of Bohemond ruler of Antioch had control of Edessa, but he lost it to Baldwin II and Joscelin son and...
  15. Other Possible Norman States

The Welsh Marches ought to be counted as a Norman kingom in that the Lords were not subject to English or Welsh law and they were of the generation who fought at Hastings.
  16. WI Iceland was settled by Celtic peoples?

If they do settle the same areas in Greenland as the Norse then they have hundreds of years in which push onto NorthAmerica. The Dorset people only settled in the north so there is no "the clash of civilisations" that helped finish the Norse off. Is fact if the Celt settlers are less xenophobic...
  17. What if US wins the Second Mexican War in TL-191 ?

If the USA wins the Second Mexican War do they annex Sonora and Chihuahua or is Maximillian made to have them back? As it was already part of the CSA I would expect Cuba to be annexed, but the two Mexican territories? And if Sonora and Chihuahua are annexed would that not be a causus belli for...
  18. What if victorious Allies restore the Tokugawa Shogunate after WWII?

Might work right up until the start of the Korean. From there it makes sense for the USA to switch to OTL because an industrialised Japan makes a good anti-communist bulwark.
  19. WI: Maccabean revolt is crushed

Exactly. The future of the Judaism would depend how that develops. Even if the Seleucids try to go for a clean sweep (something that the later Romans did not) the Jews in Alexandria are out of their reach.
