I'm actually working on something similar..
  3. Photos from Alternate Worlds

I'm sorry. I just couldn't see a single state - or small block of states - trying to pull a modern-day secession. It just doesn't make sense.

  10. May You Live In interesting Times

December 5th, 1855 London, England Jeff Dunham had it pretty good. A nice bunk at the barracks, decent food and a simple job: recruit soldiers for the Army. He had been singled out for it after serving in Crimea. His silver tongue had both infuriated and entertained several of his superiors...
  11. John McCain instead of George W Bush

Completely Ignoring all of the political crap flying....... What if the POD for a McCain Election was that the "Push-polling" and other dirty tactics used in the primaries was found to be at Bush's direct request. Now IIRC this isn't how it happened, but this is Alternate History. The...

  14. Viability of pre-industrial railroads

AHP, I was agreeing with you, just noting some points that you missed, like the mining application of railroads.
  15. Viability of pre-industrial railroads

There's also the use of "Gravity Trains". When cargo has to be moved to the top of an incline, a set of rails are constructed going up and rail cars placed there. Cables are attached at the top area and horses can pull the train up the hill (something to do with gears, I can't remember...
  16. Viability of pre-industrial railroads

RC, I do believe I said that. I was simply saying that it can be done, and was done, on small scales and that there is some slight improvement in energy use between roads and rails.
  17. Viability of pre-industrial railroads

Not quite right there. There is an advantage as it takes less energy to move the same amount of weight. The issue is construction & maintenance. You would spend much more money to have the rails than you would on a comparable road surface. The only real exception to this would be small rails...
  18. Photos from Alternate Worlds

I think the second one looks the best of the three but It's be cool to see the NYC one in more detail.
  19. Hi...

A PoD for something like that woould need to happen well before the War. Possible if the Kaiser & Tsar are better friends (IIRC they were childhood friends, but politics got in the way)
