WI: Sweden Joins The Allies After D-Day?

What would make joining the war actually worthwhile for Stockholm? IMO Sweden has little to gain from joining the war, while it would be expected that becoming a combatant would cost Swedish lives, lead to material and economic losses, and also damage to Swedish infrastructure and trade, etc.

AHC: Aug. 17, 1943 Allied raid on Nazi Peenemunde V-1 and V-2 research base also included naval artillery.

Maybe. But it would not be easy. It would be a whole another discussion how to get Finland out of the war, or de facto on the Allied side, by the summer of 1943 when IOTL it only happened in the fall of 1944.

The Soviets will win the war eventually after 1943. But this does not change the fact that at the very least until late 1944, IOTL, they could not force a fleet through the Gulf of Finland without it getting decimated on the way. Since late 1944 the Soviet submarines could manage successful...

1915: Sweden’s return to Martial Glory

Yeah, Finland does not want to become a part of Sweden again, and Sweden is smart enough to understand that after their recent experiences with Norway. The most Sweden could get out of the war in Finland is Åland, a Swedish royal on the Finnish throne, and a trade deal with Finland that...

For Want of a Word – Stolypin endures

Would there be any chance to institute a modernized version of the process of the so-called Great Partition and the Enskiftet as they were done in Sweden in the 18th century and early 19th century? And then follow up with further consolidation of farmland?

AHC: Aug. 17, 1943 Allied raid on Nazi Peenemunde V-1 and V-2 research base also included naval artillery.

In 1942, the Soviets could barely send submarines out of the Gulf of Finland, to attack merchant shipping between Germany, Sweden and Finland. And even this was, I believe, with a 20-30% loss of the submarines taking part in the offensive, due to mines and submarine nets, and active...

1915: Sweden’s Road to Utter Disaster.

In your write up above, it looks like the Russians don't react in any way to the Swedish mobilization. I consider this unlikely. If Sweden commits to what to it is a full scale mobilization, the Russians would find out before Swedish ships arrive in Finnish ports. It would be likely in this...

For Want of a Word – Stolypin endures

I tend to be sceptical of Finland's chances of holding on to its rights and an autonomous position. The trend in Russia would be towards internal harmonization of administration and the political system, and I think that Russian elites and parties would be increasingly hostile towards Finland's...

For Want of a Word – Stolypin endures

A nitpick, if you will. Prior to 1913 the Finnish railway lines were not connected to the rest of the empire's railway network, but the system terminated at the Finland Station in St. Petersburg. Only then a railway bridge across the Neva was built to connect the railway networks. This is to...

Alternative History Armoured Fighting Vehicles Part 3

Thank you kindly, good sir. High quality work, as always. It looks pretty much like I imagined it would. I have a thought as to why use a Comet, and I'll do a little write-up here later about the early days of the MTO-66 project. But not today, probably, because my right hand is still sore from...

    AHC/WI: Russia loses the Russo-Georgian war 2008

I think it is unlikely that Georgia could have won the war in any real sense. I believe that the Russians practically lured the Georgian government and military into a trap by diplomatically (and otherwise) escalating the situation, while being well prepared to counter any attack Georgia could...

Siege of Leningrad without Finland in the war

There's that, too. Personally I think that the bolded is an argument that gets more attention than it might actually merit, partly, I guess, due to a perceived need to find at least some positives for the Soviets to draw out of the debacle that was the Winter War. As I understand, the Red Army...

Siege of Leningrad without Finland in the war

The easiest way to achieve Finland staying out of the war (that is, trying its best to) would be avoiding the Winter War entirely. This would require either a) Stalin not pushing Finland to give up land in the fall of 1939, or b) Finland giving in to Soviet demands. If TTL still has a...

    TL: A Nordic Twist [Redux]

Finland ITTL will probably be seeing an even bigger "flight from the countryside" than IOTL in the 70s, especially from the north and the east, and there likely would be more work-based emigration to Sweden (which was massive already IOTL), and now likely more to the other Nordics as well. It...

Alternative History Armoured Fighting Vehicles Part 3

I replaced the photo. I'll see if I can find more from different angles later today. As for the horizontal cross beam, I was thinking about the same thing, and also @wietze commented on it above. There must be a fair bit of the launching structure missing from the Comet as it is today.

Alternative History Armoured Fighting Vehicles Part 3

I don't believe those containers were used because I have seen no photos of them in Finland unless shown aboard the Osa II (Tuima Class) missile boats that arrived to Finland in 1974. The tests with the Comet were made in the very end of the 60s or very early 70s. In fact the "hut" you seen in...

Alternative History Armoured Fighting Vehicles Part 3

Thank you for the suggestion, but I believe they didn't use that container in any of the Finnish land-based launcher designs. Here's a later design that I think was considered rather successful:

Alternative History Armoured Fighting Vehicles Part 3

In the late 1960s, the Finnish Navy and coastal artillery started receiving P-15 Termit anti-ship missiles from the Soviet Union. From the beginning, the plan was to use these missiles on missile boats, and also on land-based mobile launchers along the Finnish coastal areas. As the Soviets would...

    pop music invented during ww1

The 1910s were not the 1990s. You are not going to get an exact (or even nearly so) replica of a late 20th century thing in the early part of the century. Like @Arkenfolm said above, technological and cultural factors that would allow it are just not there yet. All kinds of organisations that...
