  1. Gaddafi annexes Chad , Impact on Francafrique

He was an arse, and would drove them away.
  2. Western version of the Mil 24 Hind

as said above, Sikorsky S-67 Black Hawk. The soviets got limited inspiration from it for the Mi-24. Otherwise - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denel_Rooivalk That big beast was build from the rotor and engines of Super Puma, because south Africa had no other option.
  3. Automotive WI - Citroen without Peugeot

It was a very interesting discussion. Now I'm distracted from my space TL by all those new ideas about Citroen fate, plus an alliance between Matra, Ligier, and Simca.
  4. WI: RAF major deployment in France in 1939/40

I smell it is inspired by the Sedan bridgehead thread :) Not a good idea. All Hurricanes ? really ?The fighter command would blow a fuse and hit the roof. Hurricanes represented something like 60% or more of fighter Command strength at the beginning of BoB. The AASF was the result of a...
  5. Space Race WI: Rotating Space Station

    blame Mark Wade :p
  6. what aircrafts and what tactics to crush the Sedan bridgehead ?

Another weakness of French aircrafts ! the bombs were too small. Too many times they dropped 100 pounds bombs (50 kg). Even a poontoon bridge can handle that.
  7. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

It was a general post, there are so many different aircrafts in the RAF I sometime lose the count. That's why I added aerial refueling. Lot of it. Also admitted France had no such aircrafts, albeit it could have been developped from the Mirage IV. It also helped France never got V-bombers...
  8. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

My point was to have the ER-103C evolve up to the Mirage III-NG level. This mean two rules a) the RAF buys no other aircraft until the 90's and a new type (let's say something like Grippen) b) that includes no Bucc / TSR-2 class aircraft So how does the bird evolves ? 1958: Mk.1 pure...
  9. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

Let's consider that interesting bird, the Mirage III-NG, flown in December 1982. It is really the ultimate evolution of the Mirage III. It is a derivative of the Mirage 50 (1979). http://www.caea.info/fr/?option=com_content&view=article&id=199:dassault-mirage-iii-ng-50-m&catid=37:avio-de-combat...
  10. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

Except a Canberra wasn't an all weather fighter by any mean. neither was a B-57.
  11. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

Ah yes, the Sea Vixen navigator darkened pit. not good. Then again the A3D Skywarrior was nicknamed "All 3 Dead" because NOBODY had ejector seats. dear god.
  12. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

USN and USMC loss rates in the 50's were equally apalling. Same for French Crusaders - 42 bought, at least 16 crashed. Naval aviation is hard. ... checked this website ... http://www.ffaa.net/aircraft/crusader/crusader_fr.htm Not 16, but 25 Crusaders lost. More than half. And six pilots killed...
  13. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

And according to Diefenbaker, everything was going to be done by BOMARC missiles. The solution is to have a versatile, cheap jet that can do everything but the kitchen sink. The Mirage III continuously evolved from 1955 to 1983, long after the Mirage F1 entered service, it took the Mirage 2000...
  14. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

The Vautour would bury a Javelin performance wise. Except it had no good radar nor missiles. now a Javelin radar and a missile on a Vautour airframe would be pretty good... While the Javelin was a piece of junk, the Sea Vixen was awesome, the real issue was all the delays it suffered. I once...
  15. The Unwanted Clairvoyant. A different French strategy in WW1

cannibalism. Eat the pets, first, then the grandmother.
  16. Automotive WI - Citroen without Peugeot

I did some search about the V6 PRV. It was much maligned, yet per lack of a better engine, it was pushed to its limits. Venturi got 450 hp of it (with twin turbo) for their last Supercar, the 400LM in 1999. Probably the most powerful French road car ever build. The 600LM build for Le Mans had 650...
  17. Automotive WI - Citroen without Peugeot

Matra U8 was such a weird idea ! Didn't knew about Peugeot 404 V8. There is so little information on the aborted PRV V8. The thing is that googling "Douvrin" doesn't work, nor "PRV", but rather "La française de mécanique" which is the true name of the automotive plant created by PRV in Douvrin...
  18. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

there was indeed a Mirage IIIK project with a Spey. Dassault managed to stuff a TF-30 into the rear end of a Mirage III prototype, the III-T. The air intakes, however, couldn't cope, plus the TF-30 loved to stall, any time, anywhere, so the marriage was not a happy one. Max speed Mach 1.4, plus...
  19. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

It starts with a MI- like a MIrage... It starts with MIG, well, like... a MIG It had MIGHT.. It ends like Lightning... It's a...a MIGHTNING !!!
  20. AHC: an 1-engined Mach-2 fighter for the RAF

ER.103C as said above. It is a shame it couldn't be considered as a fallback option to F-155T.
