  1. The Dream Survives

Love this - I'd been meaning to ask this exact question about what a more successful Shuttle program (without radical changes) looks like, and here you are! Buran at MSI is the cherry on top. Reminds me of seeing what may have been Mir mockup modules if not actual unflown hardware at Ripley's...
  2. The Stomach of Man Under Socialism: A Culinary History of Socialist America

As a Chicago-area native, my first thought was "I should go get one of those." I also know a place nearby that splits the tamale and adds a hot dog in the middle.l, which may well be an improvement.
  3. Essai en Guerre: an FFO-inspired TL

    I believe that's a reference to Camus's The Stranger.
  4. AHC: Margaret Thatcher remembered warmly by the left-wing

I had a thought about Thatcher deciding to play judo instead of head-on confrontation as she did; suppose she announces, in the run-up to the strike, the privatisation of the NCB - by transferring it to the ownership of the NUM. I don't know if that would be better done with the union as a...
  5. Keynes' Cruisers Volume 2

Okay, I forgot - did something happen in Norway here?
  6. AHC: Peerless Air Ministry

Shouldn't there be a snowball effect in loss rates as well? Lower losses implies more aircraft and pilot availability as well as higher average pilot experience, and higher availability rates due to less airfield damage, while the Luftwaffe must generate smaller or fewer sorties with less...
  7. Red Star: A Soviet Lunar Landing

Shevek - this video has a little bit of N1 segments and the assembled rocket being transported horizontally.
  8. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

Speaking of a BMP-Stug, you might want to look up the ShM-120 Pram; it's a Czech-built SP mortar on a lengthened BMP chassis with a very Stuggish shape (though with a mortar and not a gun). Only a dozen or so were built but here's a link to a big image.
  9. How Silent Fall the Cherry Blossoms

This one's actually of Japanese troops in China - note the Nambu Type 11 machine gun in the foreground.
  10. When could Germany have won WWII?

The thing about committing the Panzers at Dunkirk is that it is a really bad idea. The ground is bad, there's limited access to the area, and the British have fallen back on their heavy concentrations of artillery, including the 3.7in AA guns which had shells for and were trained for anti-tank...
  11. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

That's why I brought it up again :p I think the 2x 23mm VJa autocannon (designed for and used widely on the Il-2, 60,000+ produced during the war, so it should be widely available) is pretty good for the autocannon fit, plus a coaxial machine gun. For the anti-tank fit, I came across a...
  12. Challenge: how to deploy an anti-ballistic missile shield in 1985

For what it's worth, this is what Stuart Slade says on the topic of MIRVs vs. ABM:
  13. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

I'm thinking about the BMPT still - I'm still leaning towards the Valentine chassis for a Soviet version (though I still like the idea of a BT-7 variant, it is both less armored and probably less available, less practical for urban fighting), armed with at least 2x 7.62mm MGs (DTs maybe but...
  14. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

There's also the historically tested KV-1 armed with a 122mm howitzer, though I don't know how well that actually worked. Used the standard turret AFAIK; it was called the KV-9.
  15. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

Inspired by the above image, I thought to myself, "Hey, I can do that too!" So therefore, here is the WoT depiction of the FT-17 armed with an M1918 gun (There actually seem to have been several different M1918 155mm artillery pieces. This is the type used on the M12 GMC of WW2):
  16. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

From the World of Tanks forums:
  17. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

You ought to look up the US T29 and T32 heavy tanks - those are actually pretty close to what you're looking for. The T34 variant of the T29 in particular did mount a 120mm gun.
  18. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

I absolutely love the idea of a casemate mounted GAU-8. I can't think of any justification past plain Rule of Cool, but that's good enough for me. As for the Spitfire - the ultimate challenge, how to make a StuG out of an airplane? (Though the Hs 129 comes to mind...)
  19. Alterntive History Armoured Fighting Vehicles

Indeed, I think you have a valid point on the use of the BT-7. I thought it would be a cool image and I was thinking in terms of parallels between the T-90 and T-72 - but that doesn't necessarily make it a workable fighting system. A better choice though (for a Soviet version) might be built...
