  1. Es Geloybte Aretz Continuation Thread

Sorry to hear about your ankle, Carlton, but it's always great to see you back on this TL. You started it the year I joined the board and I'm still hopelessly attached to it. Hope you heal up quickly.
  2. Under the Southern Cross we Stand, a sprig of Wattle in our hand

This could be really interesting depending on the religious profile of the Chinese labourers. If they are Christian, or if they're amenable to conversion, you could end up with a less segregated society in Fiji as the two groups could mix within the church, rather than just replacing OTL Indians...

I only just realised you were back after editing you're other stuff! If you're happy to continue, please do, because I'll be reading.
  4. Why the Chinese play cricket (an Imperial Federation timeline)

I've just done a little checking. In my head this was the Oregon Treaty, which obviously it wasn't. Carry on. I'm happy.
  5. Why the Chinese play cricket (an Imperial Federation timeline)

I'm curious about this border. Does this mean that Canada gains San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez islands compared to OTL, and the border is otherwise the same (49th parallel)? I don't see that as in favour of Canada, but that's probably my pro-CW bias.
  6. Recommendations for reasonably plausible WWIII (and aftermath) TLs?

Your thinking of @James G. Easy mistake to make.

I take it all back. I've been watching the Olympic shooting events, and saying that they're like watching paint dry is honestly giving them too much credit. At least with that you end up with a painted wall. It's like watching an interstellar vacuum. It's the ultimate expression of nothingness...

I'd dispute that fishing and shooting couldn't be good spectator sports (although fishing is tough for live spectators). In Aus we used to have televised live fishing competitions on Saturdays and Sundays. I found them wildly boring, but clearly some people were watching. As for shooting, pistol...

That looks amazing! Very well done!

It probably won't be Slavs as a whole who are viewed negatively, as the nearby Czechs should have a positive reputation, and the Poles should be well regarded after the Germans fought a war for their freedom and they are inextricably linked into the German economy. It could be that eastern Slavs...
  11. Es Geloybte Aretz Continuation Thread

All the best to you Carlton. We will, of course, be here when you're ready.
  12. Es Geloybte Aretz Continuation Thread

What will be the official position on German settlement in Posen (i.e. Germanisation of Polish areas)? I remember that there are international treaties on mutual protection of minorities, but the details elude me.

Great quote. Thank you for that.
  14. Es Geloybte Aretz - a Germanwank

Because @carlton_bach hasn't pointed it out himself, I'll do it for him. Es Geloybte Aretz continues! https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/es-geloybte-aretz-continuation-thread.448981/#post-17403307

I don't think I've ever read anything by Chatwin, and I don't know whether an homage to him would would reflect well on either me or Shevek or not, so I won't claim it. Suffice to say I was being entirely sincere. That phrase contained a series of terms that, while I can read and understand the...

Things like this are why I love this site.
  17. Why the Chinese play cricket (The Pax Imperialis)

Regarding the US migrant population in Canada, do they really have that much affection for the US? I mean, those that are US-born haven't moved back, even though I assume TTL's depression has abated enough. And they could move back. They're citizens, and it's right there across the border. For...
  18. Es Geloybte Aretz - a Germanwank

Honestly, I don't have any first hand knowledge of what "Todays multicultural, narrowcasting, fractured broadcasting universe" looks like. I'm in Australia. I was born with 5 channels and if more than 20% of people here watch more than those I'll be very surprised. I don't watch anything on...

But sound will come, possibly earlier than OTL, and whether Germany has an influential motion picture industry when that happens will play a big part in maintaining the language's global prestige.
