A second trailer for Swarm on the Somme:

----

Black background. Silent ambient music. Muffled sounds of a WWI battlefield, with human voices and strange shrieks and roars heard. White letters start to appear.

For millennia, they tore their way across the Orion Arm. Swarms of quintillions, from which planet nobody knew nor cared, ravaged their way across solar systems. Even technologically advanced races buckled under the sheer numbers and abilities they possessed. Some choose to ally, trying to postpone the swarm as it carried on rampaging.

Fade to black, new letters:

And now...

Quick montage of black and white photos showcasing the damage done by the Grex in the first few weeks of their invasion. Dark blobs growing over Siberia, the western front, California and Australia on a vintage WWI era map.

...in 1915 AD...

Ominous black and white photos of the regions destroyed by the Grex, human soldiers desperately fighting the black alien monsters, but getting ripped to shreds or eaten.

...it is our world that caught their hungry eye...

Sudden quiet and fade to black. Sudden cut, the intro of Iron Maiden's The Trooper starts playing in the background, while a quick montage shows the soldiers, civilians, scientists and politicians of the Entente and the Central Powers preparing new plans, tech and materials for a counter-offensive. Soldiers of various races and nationalities seen fighting the Grex together, side-by-side.

Now humanity must overcome its differences...

The last shot of the montage shows the German and Austro-Hungarian high command shaking hands with the British and French commander-in-chiefs and prime minsters.

...and fight to the last man !

Series of quick cuts. French soldier (sighing):

"Merde..."

British soldier (screaming):

"Roaches !"

German soldier:

"Schaben !"

Russian soldier:

"Zhuki !"

Japanese soldiers heard excitedly shouting "Oni ! Oni !" in the background, while a Japanese lieutenant comes charging toward the camera, katana drawn, screaming:

"Banzaiiiiii !!!"

Machine guns clicking, gigantic swarms of Grex warriors rushing towards entrenchments, cannons firing, roaring Bombardier beetles replying with their own salvos. The Trooper lyrics kicking in (though in a slightly altered form):

You'll take my life but I'll take your's too...

French soldier getting impaled by a warrior, but managing to shove a handful of grenades into its maw.

You'll fire a musket...

Warrior shooting soldiers with a rifle fused to his side.

...but I'll run you through...

The warrior gets squished by a tank rolling into action and exchanging fire with the Grex.

So when you're waiting for the next attack...

Scared squad of soldiers in a ruined and besieged town, the ground underneath them suddenly errupting with a new Grex onslaught.

...you'd better stand, there's no turning back.

A fallen soldier quickly stands up, grabs his rifle and empties a few bullets into the face of an approaching Grex.

The bugle sounds as the attack begins...

Troops climbing out of the trenches and fighting the assaulting Grex with flamethrowers, swords, shovels, bayoneted rifles and gunfire.

...but on this battlefield no one wins...

Roaches tearing soldiers to bits and gunning them down, but immediately afterward getting blown up by artillery fire and burned by parafin bombs. A Bombardier shooting buildings and tanks to bits, but exploding after getting hit by a salvo of heavy artillery combined with bombs from zeppelins and bombers.

The smell of acrid smoke...

Burning buildings and destroyed military equipment, dark ominous smoke over the frontlines.

...and horses breath...

The Rough Riders and Russian cossacks charging bravely against a Grex rush.

...as you plunge into a certain death...

A frightened and weaponless soldier falling to the ground, turning around and screaming in terror as the darkness of a Grex maw fills the screen.

The horse he sweats with fear...

A few Rough Riders and cossacks falling to the ground after their horses are shot to death by Grex spines.

...we break and run...

Frantically retreating infantry with Grex in tow...

The mighty roar of the Roaches' guns...

A Bombardier fires a massive organic round while appropriately roaring to itself.

And as they race towards the human wall...

Shot from a first-person perspective of a Grex chasing and pouncing on a soldier retreating to his buddies in the trenches.

...the screams of pain as my comrades fall...

A pale shell-shocked soldier lying at the bottom of a trench with a blank stare on his face, while Grex warriors are killing his platoon.

We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground...

Both human and Grex soldiers charging each other over the rotting remains of their former co-fighters.

And as the Roaches fire another round...

Organic bullets impaling, mutating or blowing up unfortunate soldiers.

We get so near, yet so far away...

A biplane nearly managing to shoot down a Stingwraith, but it turns invisible in the nick of time and we see the pilot visibly cursing.

We won't live to fight another day...

Tank torn appart by a swarm, the last surviving member of its crew grins insanely and unpins a grenade, laughing at it. Cue outside shot of tank exploding and killing the Grex, with the crews of other nearby tanks visibly sullen about the loss.

We get so close...

Troops fast advancing on surprisingly retreating Grex.

...so near to fight...

Soldiers "fencing" with Grex and impaling them with swords and bayonets.

...when a Roach gets me in his sights...

A soldier suddenly becoming petrified and dropping his rifle, slowly moving his eyes to the left, where a Stingwraith materialises.

He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow...

Rifle fused to the side shooting an organic round that punctures a soldiers shoulder.

A burst of rounds takes my horse below...

A Rough Rider guns down several Grex with his rifle, but his horse gets killed by the fired spines. The RR is surrounded. He just shruggs phlegmatically and quickly lights a Teddy tonic.

And as I lay there gazing at the sky...

The pale soldier lying in the trench again, the shot zooming away from his face upward, revealing a trench almost completely overrun by Roaches, closing in on the spot where he lies.

My body's numb and my throat is dry...

Deckard shooting Big Ed straight in the face with a shotgun, then rubbing his scarred arm and pulling a bottle of gin out of his pocket.

And as I lay forgotten and alone...

The Austro-Hungarian soldier that got close to the hive lying trembling in horror in an infested trench.

Without a tear I draw my parting groan...

Barbed-wire-like vines erupt from the mud, entangle the Austro-Hungarian and start pulling him beneath. The last to disappear is his face, bareing a sad expression.

Lyrics and vocals fade away, along with the montage of action scenes.
Fade to black, then sudden cut.

Stalin shooting a Grex with his semi-automatic rifle and grinning at Zhukov:

"Hey, Zhukov ! Hope I didn't shoot your mother !"

Shot of Zhukov and Kemal groaning in an irritated fashion and shaking their heads.

Beat.

Cut to black background and big white letters:

@Alexander Mead: Aw, rats, Alex. You beat me by only 3 and a half hours. :(
{Edit- 9:00 p.m., actually, more like 4 and a half now.}

Ah well, hope nobody minds if I chip in, anyway. :p

Here was the idea that I had:

1. The camera appears to be zoomed out on a very pristine looking place. Children laughing, adults chattering, and various other sounds can be heard in the background.

A middle aged man with a slight Southwestern accent begins to narrate:
"When I was a youngster, I thought we had it made. We had the highest standard of living, we had the most schools, we were the richest, most well developed, and most learned and intelligent people on earth."

Cut Scene.

2. The camera is now focused and zoomed in on a city that kinda looks like a mix of New York, San Francisco, and Toronto. It is a very trashy looking place, and there are dozens of people of all sorts organized in a massive protest march, chanting to the tune of an ATL version of 'We Shall Overcome'.

While this is happening:
But little did I realize, until I got older, that things weren't all that they seemed to be.

Then, gold lettering appears, informing the viewer of where this is taking place.
Grand River, Deseret
July 22, 1953

The protesters are screaming, quite loudly, "Stop Peonage Now!", and "Liberty and Justice for all!". The camera then swings to policemen who are beginning to get very nervous. Some charge towards the protest running at full speed, revolvers and batons in hand. Tear gas canisters begin to fly.

Cut Scene.

3. Another protest. Random blacks and Chicanos, both peons and free, are being shot at by a group of right-wing extremists who are calling themselves 'The Sons of the Holy Covenant'. Police do nothing to stop them.

"There were those who had never experienced true freedom of assembly,"

Again, the viewer sees where this is happening:
Albuquerque, West Texas
April 7, 1956

Cut Scene.

4. ".....freedom of happiness....."

Hohenwald[OTL Liberty], Texas
March 4th, 1955

We see an African-American family and their white gardener who have just lost their home. The gardener is being dragged into a 'black Bobby'{paddy wagon}, while the family is being escorted into a semi truck to be taken to a debtor's camp.

Cut Scene.

5. ".....freedom to bear arms....."

Gardnerville, N.C.
September 5th, 1952

Police are shown trashing a local homestead. A white auto mechanic and his Lumbee Native American wife are being taken away for questioning; their guns are being confiscated, presumably given to other, more 'mentally fit' citizens.

Cut Scene.

6. "........freedom of speech......."

Omaha, Nebraska
December 22, 1957

An African American man who appears to be in his late 20s, is speaking to a multi-racial crowd of about 20,000 about the evils of segregation, peonage, and racism. Just as he finishes, however, 2 cops drag him away as many angry members of the crowd shout epithets at the policemen.

Cut Scene.

7. ".....or anything else."

Bellevue, No. Cal.
July 18th, 1954

The camera zooms in on a young white guy standing right next to what appears to be an ATL version of a hot rod, arguing with a cop. His Chicana girlfriend, appears to have been beaten by the cop's deputy. Suddenly, the angry policeman pushes him, and a fight begins to ensue. The screen blurs and a pistol is heard firing.

8. "Only when things got bad, did I finally wake up, and see the harsh reality before me."

No pictures here, just the spoken word.

Cut Scene.

9. Various scenes are shown of people rioting, getting shot, being hauled off to prison, burning buildings, etc.

Cut Scene.

10. "There were some, who had had enough, and were taking action."

Garden City, Kansas
August 23, 1962

We see people of all races marching together, shouting 'Peace and Love for all'!

Cut Scene.

11. An African American peace activist is on a bullhorn, shouting, 'We've had it, and we ain't standing it no more!'

Cut Scene.

12. Various montages of cars exploding, more people being shot, rounded up, etc., more burning buildings, gunfights in urban areas, and it begins to blur all together.

Cut Scene.

Another actor narrates the ending.

"Decades of Darkness: 'The Stand for Liberty"
"Based on the popular alternate history novel"

The gold colored letters appear one last time to spell out:
Coming to a theater near you
June 24, 2012

So, what do you guys think?{all original trailer, but the gold colored letters thing was a last minute thing inspired by what Alexander did. ;) }

@Caliboy

A trailer for a sequel? Hmm, looks like it could be interesting. What would the overall plot be?

Oh, and another thing - that trailer I was working on for LTTW will take a while longer, due to real life intervening to some degree. I'll try to have it up within the next half hour. Check back at this post - I'll be editing it to put in the trailer.

Which I just did. Right now.

THIS TRAILER HAS BEEN APPROVED FOR THOSE 18 AND OLDER

COMING 2013

A young, Hispanic woman is sitting in a psychiatrist’s office in a mental health institute. She is MARIA RODRIGUEZ, and the psychiatrist opposite her is Dr. JEFFERY GOINES.

GOINES: So, what do you remember before you blacked out?

CUT TO

Maria is sitting in a car, driving along a road. Music starts – a slow, mournful piece that would be appropriate at a funeral

MARIA (V.O.): The last thing I remember before blacking out

CUT TO

Another car coming down that same road

MARIA (V.O.): Was the headlights of the other car filling all my vision

CUT TO

Maria, again. She looks at the approaching car. She looks horrified.

MARIA (V.O.): And then my body jerked as this horrible crushing sound rang about in my ears and then I felt something hard slam into my head.

CUT TO BLACK

MARIA (V.O.): And then, all was black.

FADE TO

Goines’ office, again.

GOINES: And what next?

CUT TO

A void, with absolutely nothing in it. The sole exception is Maria, and a tall, bitter man with shaggy black hair dressed like a biker. This is JOHN DOE

DOE: So, you’re lost, huh?

MARIA: Who are you?

DOE: Call me...John Doe

He laughs, crazed and bitter. Maria visibly tenses up.

CUT TO

A large city, somewhere in Africa. At least, it used to be a large city. Bodies in traditional african dress are piled up, and flies are buzzing around the corpses. JOHN DOE is standing on top of such a pile. MARIA is standing beside him, terrified and uneasy. John is grinning coldly. Large black birds are circling above the ruins.

DOE: This ain’t the black death; and we ain’t in your world.

CUT TO

Montage of chaos and havoc. Sepoys fighting alongside British troops againt the Tippu Sultan. Famers in Scandinavia lying dead of the Reaping and crops unharvested. William Dales making a speech denouncing society, and noblemen being killed. Desmoulins mocking the French king. Benedict Arnold and his family fleeing across the waters to Britain

CUT TO

The city, again.

DOE: This is Kusami, center of the Ashanti Empire.

He grins a sick, twisted grin

DOE: At least, it used to be. There was a plague called the Reaping. Knocked off a third of humanity.

Maria is visibly sickened.

CUT TO

Goines’ office. He is taking notes. The camera pans back out through a window to reveal the mental institution. Crows are sitting on the windows, on the roof, and circling all around the building. The funeral march comes to a close, and the crows begin to caw until the sound is all that can be heard.

CUT TO WHITE

THE TIME OF CROWS” is written in large, black letters. After about five seconds, the letters explode into a flock of crows, which flies off.

CUT TO BLACK

The words “In association with Generic Films, based on the timeline by othyrside” appear on the screen in white letters. The trailer ends

COMING 2015

A scruffy-looking man in a tattered brown coat makes his way down a street. This is JULIUS STRICKLAND He has unkempt hair and a scraggly beard, and is carrying an empty bottle. The sky is overcast, and there are posters warning of the dangers of communism running along the sides of the buildings. There’s a sound in the distance, coming from an alleyway. The man turns to look, and begins to make his way towards it.

CUT TO

The office of Detective ALAN CARTWRIGHT, a stern man in a leather jacket. STRICKLAND is also in the room, albeit better dressed and clean-shaven. He is a young man touring the country.

CARTWRIGHT: Ever heard of a man called Fitz Plattern, Strickland?

STRICKLAND: Never

CUT TO

The street, again. STRICKLAND turns a corner and ducks into an alley. Two men in white shirts and dark slacks are beating a man in his early 20s. The victim is MATTHIAS FOX. One of the men has a wooden cudgel. Behind them, on the alley wall, are the words “IMPEACH WA” in orange paint. Strickland grimaces, then lifts the bottle as if to throw it.

CUT TO

The office, again.

CARTWRIGHT: He was a Swiss communist. Tried to get a bunch of Russian organizers back into Russia. Someone killed him before he could.

Cartwright leans forward.

CARTWRIGHT: See, sometimes you’ve got to get inside the opposition to enforce law and order.

STRICKLAND: I’m not sure I understand what you mean, detective
CUT TO

The alley, again. Strickland throws the bottle, which hits the man with the cudgel in the face. He clutches at his face and stumbles back. The man lying on the ground gets to his feet.

CUT TO

The office, again.

CARTWRIGHT: If there’s a red movement in this city, we need to strangle it in its cradle.

STRICKLAND: And where do I fit in?

CARTWRIGHT: We need someone on the inside.

CUT TO

The alley. Strickland and Fox are fighting the two thugs.

CUT TO

The streets of Birmingham. A large, multiracial crowd is marching towards city hall, carrying signs denouncing the Warren administration. Opposing them are about sixty nervous uniformed officers with an assortment of weapons. Cartwright is standing nearby, along with GID agent KIRBY. LANGE is in the front row of the protesters.

CUT TO

The office, again

STRICKLAND: And if I refuse?

CARTWRIGHT: You won’t.

STRICKLAND: Just as a mental exercise

CARTWRIGHT: I turn you over to the Concerned Citizens Committee,
who conduct their business before turning you over to the GID.

CUT TO

Birmingham, again. Cartwright barks orders at the officers, who raise their weapons. Kirby is wearing a flamethrower pack. The crowd reacts in horror. Someone begins to recite the Lord’s prayer.

CUT TO

The alley. The CCC men are lying on the ground, one of them bleeding from his face. FOX stands up from near the bleeding man, and walks towards STRICKLAND

FOX: We’d better get out of here. CCC won’t be happy.

CUT TO

The streets of Birmingham. Kirby opens fire with his flamethrower, and the first row of protesters, including LANGE, are ignited. The police open fire behind him, and more of the crowd begins to drop dead. STRICKLAND is watching from a rusting truck near the back of the crowd, sickened.

CUT TO

The passenger seat of a car. FOX is driving, and STRICKLAND is sitting in the passenger seat.

FOX: By the way, I never did find out your name

STRICKLAND: Julius

He hesitates

STRICKLAND: Julius Strokhov

The camera pans right from the car, towards a row of posters. Most of them are denouncing the evils of communism, except for the one in the center. The camera zooms in on this poster, which reads

All of these are excellent.

If TTOC would ever exist as a film, I'd wish it was scored by Clint Mansell, best in a style similar to the one he used for The Fountain. It needs some damn meditative and surreal sounding music (since Maria's visions and experiences just ooze bizarrness and mild horror). Historical scenes would occasionally have period-appropriate music heard in the background.

Black Screen.

Then, white lettering

"November 9th, 1989"

Then, slowly getting louder and louder you can hear voices chanting "Wir sind das Volk" (we are the people) in German. Suddenly you hear the screeching of tank tracks, and the sound devolves into machinegun fire, people screaming and running away.

Then the white lettering changes, as the screams and gunfire dissolve into slow orchestral music.

‘Our top story tonight the Soviet Premier, Mikhail Gorbachev is said to be seriously ill in hospital after contracting a mystery disease while on holiday in the Ukraine.
‘The Soviet government has so far not made any statement on the Premier’s condition…’

More changing writing.

13th November 1996. ‘News arms treaties signed.’
– The Independent.

In a historic meeting in Helsinki the President of the United States and the Premier of the Soviet Union added their signatures to two new treaties on reduction of nuclear weapons.
The first, for strategic weapons, known as START III, pledges both sides to reduce its warhead, and delivery platforms by 50%.
The second, the Theatre Weapons Treaty, eliminates all remaining tactical and intermediate nuclear weapons, such as those that might be used in a war in Europe.

The music changes again as the music gets more dramatic.

16th February 2003. ‘Trouble brews in Poland.’
-The Herald.

From reports coming out from behind the Iron Curtain it appears that dissent is again rearing its head within Poland, the last time being during the Solidarity crisis of 1981, when the Soviet Union nearly invaded.
There have been growing numbers of strikes, go slows, and public demonstrations, and civil disobedience, which Polish police, and troops have been reportedly increasingly reluctant to put down.

The music stops apruptly, everything is quiet for three seconds, then suddenly gunfire, explosions, then clips of NATO soldiers fighting the Warsaw Pact in Germany for ten seconds.

Then blank screen.

They told us it was not possible.

They told us it could not happen.

They told us it was just an irrational nightmare.

They showed us the figures, and the numbers, and the analysis coming from the War College.

They explained to us that the Enemy wouldn't be able to land ashore.

That He would run out of supply.

That He would never be able to bring His heavy weapons.

They assured us that the RN would destroy His ill-fitted barges in the channel.

They told us that the RAF would pound His troops and destroy them.

They told us it was not possible.

And we chose to believe them.

How foolish were we.
