Gone Fishin'
After Germany was defeated in the Second World War, the country was partitoned: eastern Pomerania, Silesia and southern East Prussia were ceded to Poland, and northern East Prussia was ceded to the Soviet Union. The remainder of the country was divided into four occupation zones, as was its capital Berlin.

Here's a challenge. Let's say your country is defeated and occupied like how Germany was. What lands would be carved off and what would the occupation zones look like? Maybe you could throw in some additonal trms.

I'll get started with Australia:
  • All of Australia's overseas territores are seized:
    • Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, Macquarie Island and the eastern segment of the Australian Antarctic Territory are ceded to New Zealand.
    • Heard Island, the McDonald Islands and the western segment of the Australian Antarctic Territory are ceded to France.
    • Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Ashmore and Cartier Islands are ceded to Indonesia.
    • The Coral Sea Islands are detached from Australia and become a UN-adminstered nature reserve.
  • In addition, the Torres Strait Islands are ceded to Papua New Guinea.
  • The occupation zones are as follows:
    • The US zone consists of the drainage basin of the Murray and Darling rivers.
    • The Chinese zone conissts of the sector of Queensland not already covered by the US zone.
    • The New Zealand zone consists of the coastal regions of New South Wales, Victoria, and eastern South Australia, as well as the entirety of Tasmania.
    • The Indonesian zone consists of the northern Nothern Territory and the Kimberely and Pilbara regions.
    • The EU zone consists of the coastal regions of Western Australia and western South Australia.
    • The interior desert of the country not designated to any occupation will remain a free zone.

Finally, the revenge of the Danelaw. Don't forget to give Berwick-upon-Tweed back to Scotland!

On that note, where's our occupation zone? Ireland occupying part of England is too delicious a thought to ignore :p

stodge - Denmark
As somebody has done the UK, I'll do a 1980s partition of Denmark.

West Germany takes half of Jutland with Norway taking the other half and Fyn.

Sweden occupies Sjaelland while East Germany occupies Lolland and Falster and Poland takes Bornholm.

Greenland declares independence and is immediately occupied by Canadian, American, British and Icelandic forces.

Rattenfänger von Memphis - United States
For the United States, I’ll assume that the country falls to a Russian-Chinese alliance and that alliance’s associated powers (Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela and North Korea) To the victors belong these spoils…

(1)New York City will be designated the new U.S. capital where the occupying powers meet and thrash out their differences. Each of the occupying powers, except for North Korea, have their own New York City zone of occupation.

-----Manhattan is the Russian sector

-----Brooklyn is the Chinese sector

-----Queens is the Mexican sector

-----The Bronx is a joint Cuban-Venezuelan sector

(2)CHINA : China annexes Hawaii outright as well as the Pacific islands that were under American control, namely American Samoa, Guam, the Marianas, the Marshalls and the Caroline Islands. On the U.S. Mainland, China’s occupation zone will be the four states of California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

(3)MEXICO : Mexico’s occupation zone will consist of 7 states of mostly of what Mexico ceded to the United States after the Mexican-American War plus adjacent territory ,i.e. Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Colorado and Kansas.

(4)NORTH KOREA : North Korea is granted an occupation sector consisting of 6 states, mainly to act as a buffer zone between the Russian and Chinese zones and is basically territory that no one else wants to patrol: Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska. (The North Korean sector is landlocked just as the American sector of mainly Bavaria was landlocked in OTL post-World War II)

(5)CUBA and VENEZUELA : Cuba gains the return of Guantanamo Bay and annexes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands outright and shares a joint zone of occupation with Venezuela of 4 states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Both countries together have a population capable of maintaining order in these 4 states.

(6)RUSSIA : Russia annexes Alaska outright and her occupation zone consists of the remaining 27 states, Staten Island and Washington D.C.. This occupation zone gives Russia control of the entire Mississippi River Valley with a Gulf of Mexico access coastline of the 3 states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama as well as the Midwest heartland and the industrial Northeast.

stodge - Ireland
Extract from "New Frontiers - Life Beyond the Irish War"

The final surrender of Jamaican, Cuban and Angolan forces was soon followed by the collapse of the People's Republic as the first NATO tanks moved into Dublin. The Russians were furious at developments but, bogged down as they were in Afghanistan, were unable to do anything other than complain diplomatically. Indeed, the leaking of classified documents after the Second Revolution confirmed Moscow saw the Irish Communists as fractious, ill-disciplined and more trouble than they were worth.

As the last of the Irish People's Army (IPA) capitulated or were destroyed in a short-lived skirmish near Kilbeggan, thoughts turned to the future of the island.

British demands for complete annexation were quickly refused - the mood among Democrats in the Kennedy administration was sorrow Ireland had fallen so far but the ghosts of De Valera and Collins still haunted the bars of New York and Boston. Thinking at the State Department turned to the idea of partition and this was strengthened by talks between Kennedy and French President Mitterrand from which Prime Minister Thatcher, much to her chagrin, was excluded.

The Treaty of Dublin of 1st May 1988 confirmed the de facto partition of the Ireland - Britain retained full control of Ulster which was returned to its former boundaries thus incorporating Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan. This was Britain's "reward" for doing much of the fighting and ensuring the nascent Communist state in Dublin was strangled at birth.

The United States took over the administration of Connaught and made it akin to Puerto Rico - before very long, a large American naval and military base had been established near Castlebar which could contain 100,000 troops and material for short notice lift to Europe and the Middle East as well as the new United States East Atlantic Fleet Headquarters. It would play an instrumental role in the Balkan Wars of the 1990s and later conflicts in North and Central Africa and the Middle East.

Leinster was retained as the homeland of the new Republic of Ireland - effectively under the control of the other occupying powers who maintained a presence in Dublin itself where British, American and French troops patrolled their own zones of occupation. The new Irish Prime Minister, Brendan Saunders, dealt mainly with the Irish Control Commission (ICC) which involved the complete dismantling of the Irish Communist Party and the return of Church lands expropriated at the start of the Revolution.

Most controversially, Munster was placed under EEC administration with Cobh and Kinsale as freeports for all shipping and trade. The new French Governor quickly restored the power of the Catholic Church and instituted a return to more traditional values such as bans on abortions and outlawing homosexuality - this proved highly controversial with both the US and the Republic and there was considerable population displacement across all the new internal borders of the fragmented island.

stodge - Prussia
Pre-1900, I thought we could divide Prussia after a disastrous Third Silesian War - no "Miracle of the House of Brandenburg".

Extract from "A Piece Removed - the Extinction of Prussia in the 18th Century".

Frederick II enjoyed initial success in the conflict but after the disastrous defeat at Hochkirch on 14th October 1758, the advantage passed first to Austria and then to Russia. The following year saw Frederick and the Prussians compelled to fight an ever more desperate rearguard action as Swedish, Russian and Austrian forces encroached on Prussian territory. Frederick's efforts to get help from Britain came to naught and, despite a summer of skirmishes and tactical retreats, the Prussians were brought to battle at Kunersdorf on 12th August 1759.

It was a catastrophic defeat for Frederick who was wounded on the battlefield and lost nearly 30,000 men. The coalition ranged against him sensed an opportunity and closed on Berlin from three sides. A final battle in front of the city was inconclusive but failed to stop the coalition forces entering Berlin and razing the Prussian capital. Somewhere in the fighting, Frederick II was killed along with his brother Prince Augustus William while the young heir presumptive Prince Frederick William was discovered cowering in a basement with his family and taken in chains to the Russian capital.

The victorious powers soon gathered in Dresden to consider the fate of their former foe - none were disposed to show much mercy.

To the victors the spoils - the Austrians took Silesia, the Swedes Pomerania and part of west Prussia, the Russians took east Prussia, the Poles south Prussia and the Holy Roman Empire under Maria Theresa's husband, Francis I, was given the remnants of what was once Prussia.

The population were stunned by the suddenness of their fall from grace - in essence, the Prussians were a conquered people ruled over by an alliance of their conquerors.

The British had rejected an alliance with Prussia but instead forged better terms with the new alliance as a counterweight to French power further west.

The alliance broke up with the death of Tsar Peter in 1762 - his successor, Catherine, forged a more independent path but the alliance between Sweden, Austria, Poland and the Empire survived until the coming of the Revolutions of the latter part of the century.

A British traveller to Berlin in the mid 1760s reported seeing "the brigands of the conquerors abroad - Swedish hussars, Polish dragoons and Austrian cavalry making merry while the Prussian people, once so powerful, were as slaves in their own land"

As we now know, a new Germanic state would eventually emerge out of the ruins of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria but its seat would be in the west and south rather than in the east. Successive Polish states would maintain the province of Prusy as a reminder of the old Prussian Kingdom which had died in 1759
