Dear ſir,

Aſ uſſually your companieſ productſ are of the fineſt quality, however your lateſt Map of The Nationſ of Europe containſ ſome annoying errorſ. I counted four instanceſ, where the s, which iſ only uſed in the nameſ of waterbodieſ (Mandatory for riverſ, prefered for otherſ, which i regrettably ſee your company not doing, but i can live with that choiſe, if it at leaſt done conſiſtently, which it iſn't), iſ uſed in plain text and country- and citynameſ. Moſt annoying iſ the very inconſiſtent uſe in the country name Ruſſia.
Pleaſe correct theſe errorſ and i probably end up buying your eſthetically pleaſing map.

One of the rules of the long s, if i remember, was that it was only used once in a word. It didn't serve as all of the s-s in a word, only the first iirc.

If I remember right, only if it's the first letter of all in the word. So only used as the first letter, no others, when the word begins with an s.

Thanks! Looking through an old book I see you’re right about Ruſſia, so I’ll change that and the rivers (and add the missing city of Nicoſia). Though was it not the case that when a word ended with an S it was always the standard S rather than ʃ, except in abbreviations? Hence Tunis->Tunisia rather than Tuniſia. I don't know, maybe?

The usage of long s varied by language, country, time period, and sometime in the same sentence. So I would just pick which usage you like.

Eighteenth-century English language usage had the long s used for all s's in a word except for those adjacent to f's, at the very end of the word, and occasionally as the second in a pair of s's. In the seventeenth century, round s was also used before b and k. Importantly, it was also only used in the lowercase, and had no uppercase form, just like how Greek sigma is σ or ς in the lowercase but only Σ in the uppercase – I'm not really sure where the idea that ʃ is uppercase ſ came from. And the bit about round s only being used in the names of bodies of water is complete nonsense.

So:
✓ Ruſſia
✓ Ruſsia
✓ Rußia (if you're feeling a little German; ß developed from the conflation of a ſs and a ſʒ ligature)
✗ RUʃʃIA
✗ RUʃSIA
✓ RUSSIA
✗ ʃt. Peterſburg
✓ St. Peterſburg
✓ St. Petersburg (17th century usage, looks a little nicer IMO)
✓ Tunis
✗ Tunisia
✓ Tuniſia
✗ TUNIʃIA
✓ TUNISIA

Hope that's sufficiently illustrative.

It absolutely 100 % is, but i was roleplaying in a world where it was, because i noted that the rivers were unchanged, while other waterbodies were changed and i suspected that that difference somehow had to do with the layering of the computerprogram the cartographer used, so to make it more simple i just invented a rule to back the pattern.

As i was saying the Russia on the map felt wrong and after reading your comment, i see that my gut feeling here was right, though i couldn't formulate the reason as well as you (and others) did here.

The scanlines on the map are pretty cool - makes it look like it came out of a retro 90s CRT TV, which for some reason adds to the alt-history vibe of it for me (thanks, TNO!)

I haven't read the original timeline. What does the "Pinnacle Race/Civilization" mean, exactly? From the looks of it, sounds like some sort of weird "master race" political bloc, but if so, that specific group of countries is certainly a weird combination, to say the least...

I was thinking, after seeing the "overseas territories" map: is that a Greek colonial empire? Only to discover by looking at the flags section it is merely just France under a different coat of paint :(
France has been using the Cross of Saint Michael for a long while before the Greeks did.
Which is, in part, why the Québecois flag and IIRC Martinique employ it.

You could say that. Note, my map is only inspired by the timeline and definitely not a good representative of WMIT. Basically WMIT if I summarize it is basically a vengeful (and broken) United States (mainly the New England region) that started radicalizing in mid 19th century in a Bonapartist-France dominated world to become a massive racist, totalitarian, de facto theocratic state alongside its "allies".

What changed: British soldier Private Henry Tandey shoots Adolf Hitler, then a wounded German soldier.

On September 28, 1918, a random British soldier who went by the name Henry Tandey was serving near the French village of Marcoing, and encountered a German soldier. Unbeknownst to him, this soldier, Lance Corporal Adolf Hitler, was wounded, and so Private Henry Tandey pulled the trigger. Also, the day before, It is rumored that someone had appeared in New York and kicked a rock, and then disappeared. It is rumored that this person also was from the future. People say this guy was an alien, but now it is just viewed as another “alien” sighting. That is not what this is about, however. In 1922, Italian Benito Mussolini overthrew the Italian government, and replaced it with his own fascist dictatorship, with ambitions to make Italy great again, and even bring back a Neo-Roman Empire. In the east, the Bolsheviks win in the Russian Civil War, and form the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. Japan invades China, and sets up the old Qing government in Manchuria. Then in 1932, the Chaco War started between Bolivia and Paraguay, resulting in a Paraguayan Victory in 1935. In 1936 the communists in China were officially defeated, having been in constant decline ever since the Great March. The Battle of Shaanxi didn’t help them, either. Xinjiang then declared themselves the Western Bastion of the PROC, and officially aligned themselves with the USSR. Now, this was set up after Mao’s Surrender. Britain takes control of Southern Arabia, with Oman having Autonomy. Mussolini’s Italy invades and conquers Ethiopia. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War takes off, with the Fascist Nationalists and Communist Republicans. The Nationalists have control over the colonies and the west of Spain, being supported by Italy, Portugal, and China, as well as foreign volunteers from officially neutral countries. In 1937, Italy demands Albania join them. Albania accepts Italian demands, and is granted some local autonomy. In 1937, the Allies agree that the Weimar Republic will be allowed to build up a military without restrictions, excluding those set by the Treaty of London. This means that the Rhineland is now militarized. As of this moment in time, the Allies are focusing on their domestic issues, which were worse and progressively got worse as the Great Depression wreaked havoc among Capitalism. The communists did not have this problem. The fascists in Italy were busy supporting Spain, So was Portugal. Japan and China were hit by this too, as well as the rest of the world. Not the communists. The USSR took advantage of this and invaded Estonia and Latvia. The Weimar Republic then pledged full military support if Lithuania were ever to be on the defensive side of a military conflict. With this, the USSR then invades Poland. Poland focuses on saving the people from Communism instead of their borders, so they give Lithuania their claimed lands before the Soviets could get to it. Then, the Allies threatened war if the USSR continued their assault on Poland, and so they decided to set up a client state in their occupied lands in Poland, the People’s Republic of Poland, with both governments splitting Warsaw. Then, in 1938, the Allies all started supporting the Nationalists in Spain. In August of 1939, the USSR invades Czechoslovakia, and then demands that the Czech government give the USSR Slovakia. Czechoslovakia agrees, and houses the Slovakian government in their land. The USSR sets up the Slovak People’s Republic. Then, Czechoslovakia, still named Czechoslovakia in honor of Slovakia, joins the Allies. Italy, China, and Japan also agree to assist if the Allies ever go to war with the USSR. On March 18, 1940, “China” dropped a bomb on Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Mongolia responds by declaring war on China, a war which Japan and Italy join in. The Allies also join the war to honor the pacts of Tokyo-London, Beijing-Paris, Rome-Berlin, Burgos-Vilnius, and Prague-Warsaw. Now, who will be victorious?
Any Thoughts or Comments or Questions?

Just now realising that I forgot the post-Chaco war borders. Just pretend that Paraguay has modern borders.

Swedish gains in the Baltics

Baltic Balance of Power Shattered

Poland and her allies have been confining the Swedes confined to their corner of the Baltic sea, but with their decisive victory during the Third Baltic War, the Swedish Kingdom now eyes the southern shores of the Baltic like an open oyster.

The Third Baltic War was concluded at the Peace of Puck, signed on 8 September 1909. The treaty stipulated that Poland would cede Prussia to Sweden, renounce her guarantee of the Baltic Counties and restrict their army to a measly 70,000 men for 15 years. Swedish victory shattered the balance of power that had reigned in the Baltic for over 100 years and marked the beginning of the rapid territorial expansion of the Swedish Kingdom.

The Baltic Counties, a loose confederation of various city-states, countdoms and republics is a relatively poor, weak and disunited polity on the eastern edge of the Baltic Sea. Though coveted by many neighbouring states due to their strategic position, they had long rested easily under Polish protection. But with the decisive defeat of the Poles at the hands of the Swedes, the Balts saw the writing on the wall. When faced with the possibility of a Swedish invasion, the government of the Baltic Counties almost tore itself apart as a nation beset by internal strife. The city-states wanted to surrender to the Swedes and let themselves be annexed peacefully, the dukedoms wanted to negotiate and the republics wanted to actively resist a Swedish invasion. Before any sort of consensus was reached, Swedish troops had already occupied the majority of the Union, facing little armed resistance.

Swedish Colonial Policy

To cement their grasp over their newfound dominions, the Swedish Kingdom pursued a policy of nationalist colonization. In Prussia, the region of Skalvia, renamed to Sklavien, was to be set aside for settlement by Swedes. Twangste was to be renamed to Glesborg and serve as the capital for the entire Prussian dominion. The Baltic capital, Dunava was renamed to Bjelbo and a new administrative region of Bjelbo was to be set aside for Swedish colonization.

Swedish-Lithuanian War

Samogitia was the next price in the eyes of the Swedish Kingdom. Acquisition of the territory would let them form a land bridge between the Prussian and Baltic territories and take the valuable port of Klaipėda. War was declared on 12 March 1912 and the Swedish army initially seemed to storm the dukedom. The Lithuanian army was continuously pushed back even beyond the Lithuanian capital in Vilnius.

It was when the frontline was pushed to the Dainava Forest that the Lithuanian army entrenched itself properly and seriously repelled any attempt at Swedish advancement. Attempts to disengage with the Lithuanians led to vicious counteroffensives and skirmishes. Despite occupying half of the country, the Lithuanian duke refused any sort of peace offer from the Swedish King.

The Swedish army was locked in a precarious situation. Though well trained and well-armed, they were stretched thinly along the lengthy frontline. As the Lithuanian army outnumbered them, the Swedes could scarcely afford a war of attrition and rumours of rebel activities and stay-behind regiments in occupied Lithuania threatened the outcome of the war.
