TL-191: After the End

Also, do Presidential candidates of TTL still need an electoral vote majority to win? With 3 strong parties, I’d imagine a lot of races go to congress

By 2052, the world of TTL , including the United States, is far better prepared for a pandemic in comparison to our world’s 2020. However, Hubei Respiratory Syndrome-52 is also a deadlier disease than COVID-19 initially was during the beginning of the OTL pandemic.
Alright, at least the preparedness is better and the world ITTL isn't as hammered by the looks of it.

The Dixie Mafia Scandal was worse than that. To make a long story short, it involved President Holst attempting to hire contract killers from major criminal outfits associated with the Dixie Mafia in order to target his opponents in Congress, the Federal judiciary, and the media.

Holst, according to investigators, attempted to carry out this murderous action in response to the Congressional rejection of his proposed initiative to nationalize major sectors of the economy, as well as in response to the Congressional rejection of his proposal to confiscate the private property of anyone labeled as an “enemy of the people.”

The plot by Holst, which was embraced by his Vice President, utterly failed, as the Holst administration was already under investigation by several US government agency over allegations that the president had maintained ties to organized crime (these kinds of allegations had dogged Holst throughout his political career). Holst would become the first to be impeached, removed from office, and ultimately sentenced to life in prison after a long and acrimonious trial in Federal court.

As late as 2162, Charles Holst is viewed both by the US public and US presidential historians as the worst president in US history.
With that, was Holst ever really on the far-left? Makes him look syncretic/third-positionist allying with them and his anti-Jewish rants.

He probably took up the far left by default. Being a Fascist or right wing populist would've seen him compared to the CSA and likely wouldn't have gotten his career off the ground in that case.

He seems Stalin-esque to me, although thankfully constrained by a functioning system of checks and balances as well as less competent in general. As for his connections to the Dixie Mafia, that wouldn't necessarilyindicate far-right sympathies. DBE might have to correct me here, but my estimation is that the Dixie Mafia has no real political program beyond ensuring it's able to continue operating; while there's no way they're not overwhelmingly White American and hostile towards immigrants and people of color*, I suspect that, if nothing else, the more successful Dixie gangs would steer a more neutral path in deference to the bottom line.

*I'm not sure whether they consider Jews to be either of these, because IIRC there were a few Jews in the upper echelons of the Freedom Party and Featherston may not have been remarkably antisemitic. This doesn't necessarily hold true for White American criminal organizations, but it might. Also I could be entirely wrong about this, but I guess I'll find out about that.

Yes, winning the over a certain number of electoral votes is still necessary to win the presidency. By 2021, a presidential election going to the House of Representatives has not yet happened.

Do the Antarctic claims still exist in TTL? If so, who's claiming?

Yes. In 2021, several great powers, including the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Republic of Bharat, the Empire of Brazil, the Republic of China, the German Empire, the Russian Republic, and the United States of America, all claim territory in Antarctica.

There are several other countries that have territorial claims in Antarctica backed by different great powers. For example, the claims by Australia and Chile are backed by the United States, the claim by Argentina is backed by Brazil, and the claim by South Africa is supported by Bharat.

Thank you for the list. Here are the presidents who served in office from the end of the main timeline until the Beckford administration.

-
Alfred Astaire, of the Democratic Party (2013-2021):

Former head of the Bureau of Investigation. The first Democrat to win the presidency since Thurston DeFrancis in the 1992 elections, and the first Democrat to serve two terms since Joshua Blackford in the 1970s. Astaire left office deeply unpopular due to the effects of the Great Housing Crash of 2019.

-
George Novak, of the Socialist Party/National Fusion (2021-2025):

Senator from Ohio before winning the Socialist Party presidential nomination in 2020. Formed the “National Fusion” ticket with Governor Philip Wakefield of New Jersey (a Republican), in the name of pursuing a “non-partisan” government, in spite of opposition from within the Socialist Party and the refusal of the Republican Party to endorse the arrangement.

George Novak became deeply unpopular while in office, due to his failure to address the effects of the Great Housing Crash. In 2024, he failed to win renomination from the Socialist Party in the face of a challenge from Representative Charles Holst, a long-time marginal figure in the Socialist Party and in the House of Representatives, due to his far-left political views. Novak and Wakefield attempted to win re-election by founding an actual National Fusion Party, only to lose in every state in the 2024 elections, due to Novak’s widespread unpopularity and the failure of National Fusion to gain ballot access in a number of states.

-
Charles Holst (2025-2027), of the Socialist Party:

Representative from a New York City congressional district. Holst served in Congress for almost twenty years before successfully challenging President Novak for the Socialist Party nomination in 2024. Holst, for most of his political career, was considered a marginal figure in Congress, due to his far-left political views, penchant for over-the-top revolutionary rhetoric, and abrasive personality. However, Holst gained national attention and broader acceptance during the Novak administration after emerging as the unpopular Novak’s preeminent political foe. Holst won the 2024 elections against a Republican Party still suffering from the divisions caused by Wakefield’s defection to the National Fusion ticket, and a Democratic Party still unpopular due to the Great Housing Crash.

The Holst administration ended in failure and disaster. Congress refused to pass the president’s plan to nationalize whole sectors of the economy, or the president’s proposal to grant the executive branch the power to expropriate property and wealth from anyone labeled an “enemy of the people.” Holst also caused alarm and outrage when he started to openly talk about ending term limits, as well as when he started to openly use antisemitic rhetoric blaming Jews for the Great Housing Crash.

Charles Holst was ultimately undone when his administration was caught up in the Dixie Mafia Scandal in 2026-2027, following a years-long investigation by several law enforcement agencies. This scandal resulted in the arrest of Holst’s Vice President, Conrad Koehler by the Bureau of Investigation, the arrest of several of Holst’s cabinet members during that year, and in Holst’s impeachment and conviction in April 2027. Holst was removed from office that month, and would later be sentenced to life in prison after being convicted on multiple charges related to the Dixie Mafia Scandal.

Due to the arrest of former Vice President Koehler, Representative James Davies, the Speaker of the House, was inaugurated as president in April 2027.

-
James Davies, of the Republican Party (2027-2029):

A longtime Representative from Ontario, Davies eventually fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming Speaker of the House, following the 2022 midterm elections. Due to the presidential line of succession, Davies was inaugurated as president in April 2027, following the collapse of the Holst administration in the Dixie Mafia Scandal.

Davies was the second Canadian-American to hold the presidency. He pledged not to run in the 2028 elections, but also promised a “return to good government,” following the now almost universally despised Holst administration. The most significant initiative by the short Davies administration was the creation of a congressional Joint Committee of Inquiry to fully investigate and publicize the criminal activity of the former administration.

-
Arnold Burroughs, of the Republican Party (2029-2037):

A Senator from Ontario, and close political ally of former Speaker of the House James Davies. The third Canadian-American to serve as president. The Burroughs administration oversaw the economic recovery from the over decade-long recession caused by the Great Housing Crash. Burroughs who had been a member of the Infrastructure and Public Works Caucus while in Congress, embraced a massive program to improve US infrastructure, as well as a program of urban renewal. Burroughs also focused on improving ties between the US and the member states of the CDS, which had been neglected during the Novak and Holst administrations. It was the Burroughs administration that began the first tentative, quiet talks with government of Texas on the possibility of pursuing reunification, after the US government was approached by special representatives from the president of Texas.

-
Eleanor Lehrer, of the Democratic Party (2037-2045):

A Senator from California before winning the Democratic Party nomination in 2036, Eleanor Lehrer was the first woman to serve as president. Lehrer had a strong interest in foreign policy and defense policy. The Lehrer administration also focused on improving the US position in the ongoing Space Chase.

Lehrer, the second Jewish-American to serve as president after Joshua Blackford, had also been a frequent target of former President Holst’s antisemitic rants.

The Lehrer administration also pursued the diplomatic talks with the government of Texas that had been started during the Burroughs administration on the possibility of Texas rejoining the Union. The government of Texas had originally instituted these talks for economic reasons, as the Great Housing Crash had been especially harsh in that nation. These talks would result in a referendum on reunion held in Texas in 2044, the centennial of the independence of Texas, the fall of the CSA, and the end of the Second Great War. This referendum resulted in the option for reunion failing by a margin of 51% to 44%.

The failure of this referendum, intended by President Lehrer to be the culmination of her administration’s until-then generally successful foreign policy initiatives, led to a temporary dip in national popularity for the Democratic Party in 2044. Combined with the Republican Party nominating a weak candidate, this would provide a window for the successful return to office by the Socialist Party through their nominee, Senator Dennis Beckford.

-
Dennis Beckford, of the Socialist Party (2045-2053):

A Senator and former Representative from Jamaica, Dennis Beckford had risen in influence in the Socialist Party in the late 2020s and 2030s, as the party struggled to emerge from the twin disasters that had been the Novak and Holst administrations. Beckford, during this time, threw himself into initiatives to rebuild the party as a national force (mirroring previous efforts by the Republican Party in the Twentieth Century to do accomplish the same goals). By the time that Beckford won the Socialist Party’s nomination in 2044, the Socialists had restored a significant measure of influence in terms of congressional seats and governors mansions held by the party. Beckford managed to triumph in the 2044 presidential elections. He was first African-American to serve as president, as well as the second president to serve from the Caribbean region of the country.

Dennis Beckford proved to be a popular president, and enjoyed a number of legislative accomplishments during his two terms in office. Perhaps the most far-reaching initiative passed by the Beckford administration was the Clean Energy Act of 2045, which committed the US to powering its grid entirely through renewable sources of energy within a generation.

The biggest test for the Beckford administration would come late in his second term, with the advent of the Hubei Respiratory Syndrome-52 Pandemic, in the spring of 2052. President Beckford would become, in effect, a wartime president during the greatest national and international crisis faced by the United States since 1944.
My god, this is a dark list of Presidents... I reckon after so many one term Presidentes ending their administration in disgrace or deeply unpopular... the overall citizenry would be very disenchanted. This should create some fertile ground for counter culture movements throughout the 2020s and 2030s.

With that, was Holst ever really on the far-left? Makes him look syncretic/third-positionist allying with them and his anti-Jewish rants.

Charles Holst, whatever else he was, definitely was on the far-left. He came from a family of loyal Socialist Party activists and union members.

Where he diverged from the vast majority of Socialist Party activists from his generation was in his embrace of political radicalism. He was, to the very end, a firm believer in the need for a Revolution to overturn the US political and economic system, in order to usher in a utopian future of rule of, by, and for the working class. Holst, had he lived in our world, would have eagerly embraced both the October Revolution and the eventual development of the USSR under Josef Stalin. As it was, Holst, as a youthful activist, celebrated the emergence of the Japanese Workers Republic, and was often heard to remark throughout his political career that the defeat of the Communist revolutionaries in the First Russian Civil War had been a seminal tragedy.

Holst was a marginal figure in the House of Representatives throughout most of his political career. His over-the-top, profanity-laden rhetoric promoting a revolution, The Revolution, made him a constant source of mockery from his House colleagues, including from almost all of his fellow Socialist Party representatives. Holst developed a somewhat buffoonish public image, but was consistently re-elected due to his ability to bring large amounts of Federal money to his New York City district.

While no one in US political circles took Holst seriously during his time in the House, the buffoonish image that he cultivated concealed a man of boundless ambition and cruelty, and with a myriad of personal hatreds. Holst also had a lifelong contempt for the US political system of checks and balances derived from the Constitution. The utopia that he imagined throughout his political career had no room for either of these hallmarks of the US government.

Throughout his political career, Holst was dogged by allegations of having connections to the world of organized crime. Although subject to at least two major judicial probes by the Bureau of Investigation while in the House, not enough evidence was gathered during either of these probes for an arrest to be made. Several US government agencies were investigating President Holst in relation to allegations of Holst accepting multiple bribes from a known New York City associate of the Norfolk Outfit (a Dixie Mafia gang) when evidence was uncovered that would lead to the Dixie Mafia Scandal.

Holst wasn’t without skills as a politician. He was one of the first US politicians to recognize, in the late 2010s, the potential of the many OptyTalk sites on the ComboNet to grant him a national audience unfiltered by “respectable” media. Holst’s rise to the presidency, however, would not have occurred without the following unlikely series of events:

-The Great Housing Crash of 2019, which caused widespread economic devastation across the United States.

-The election of Senator George Novak (S-OH) in the 2020 elections on the “National Fusion” ticket with Governor Philip Wakefield (R-NJ). Many Socialist Party activists and politicians, baffled by Novak’s obsession with creating a utopian-sounding “non-partisan” government, became opponents of President Novak when he appeared to embrace an agenda of economic austerity proposed by the congressional Business and Prosperity caucus, instead of proposals by his own Socialist Party for an ambitious agenda of public relief and public works. Charles Holst, in making himself the loudest and angriest opponent of President Novak, suddenly gained a measure of acceptance from a Socialist Party feeling betrayed by their own president, and a general public alienated by the president’s seeming monomaniacal obsession with “non-partisanship” at the expense of addressing the Great Housing Crash.

Holst, in 2024, was able to ride a wave of popular anger within Socialist Party to an unprecedented victory in the party’s nomination battle over the incumbent president. Holst won the general elections of 2024 in no small part due to the unpopularity of the Democratic Party (widely blamed for the Great Housing Crash), and due to the fragmentation within the Republican Party caused by Philip Wakefield’s defection to the now-doomed National Fusion ticket.

President Holst quickly ran into obstacles in proposing his radical and sweeping economic agenda to Congress. Both Houses by this time were narrowly held by the Republican Party, and the Speaker of the House, Representative James Davies, was a staunch political opponent of Holst. Holst, however, did not intend to govern like a traditional US president. His rhetoric, upon the expected congressional rejection of his initial legislative proposals, became more and more unhinged and violent. President Holst now openly called for his supporters/the working class (one and the same in his mind) to help in overthrowing the “class enemies” in the name of The Revolution.

It was during this stage of President Holst’s brief administration that he also started to openly use antisemitic rhetoric. Holst blamed the Jews for the Great Housing Crash, and reserved particular vitriol for Jewish lawmakers in Congress, including Senator Eleanor Lehrer (D-CA) a future president in her own right.

Historians and political observers would initially debate the nature of President Holst’s antisemitism; after all, he had never utilized this rhetoric before becoming president. Following the fall of the Holst administration, in the late 2020s and early 2030s, a number of his former confidants and associates would state for the public record that Holst had been just as bigoted while in the House of Representatives.

President Holst was already facing the prospect of impeachment in early 2027, before the shattering revelations that accompanied the Dixie Mafia Scandal. Too much of the president’s rhetoric by that point brought to mind memories of Jake Featherston. The Dixie Mafia Scandal caused Holst’s few remaining political allies to abandon him. Within a short period of time, Holst’s own Vice President was arrested in association with the Dixie Mafia Scandal, followed by the rapid and successful impeachment of President Holst on a long list of charges. Holst, at this stage, refused to accept his removal from office. He now called for his imagined supporters to come to Washington to begin The Revolution. On the morning of what proved to be his last day in the White House, in 2027, he was briefly heartened by the appearance of a huge crowd outside of the Executive Mansion. Too late, he realized that this crowd was actually here to call for his arrest. This crowd cheered loudly when the Bureau of Investigation and the local police did just that.

After an acrimonious federal trial, former president Charles Holst was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with charges stemming from the Dixie Mafia Scandal. Holst would spend the rest of his life at the federal penitentiary located in Fort McSweeney, Oregon. The fact that he was in a prison where former Confederate government officials had once been held was not lost on Holst, who continued, for the rest of his life, to claim that he had been a victim of an international “Jewish-Capitalist” conspiracy.

For a brief period of time following the fall of the Holst administration, the Socialist Party faced the possibility of electoral oblivion, in the face of the disastrous twin administrations of George Novak and Charles Holst. It’s a testament to the skill and dedication to a number of Socialist Party politicians and activists, especially one Dennis Beckford of Jamaica, that the party was able to rebuild itself and successfully elect a presidential candidate by 2044.

One long-term legacy of the Holst administration was that the sizable Jewish-American community completely deserted the Socialist Party, to the eager embrace of both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Even by 2162, the Jewish community in the United States, according to most surveys, almost entirely refused to support the Socialist Party.

So basically in our world, he'd be an unapologetic "tankie", for lack of a better term.

Nice! I am willing to make a map of the claims in the antarctic in TTL, but idk what areas they claim

Indeed. The American Nightmare counterculture of the late 2020s and late 2030s certainly reflects the widespread disillusionment in the US following the Great Housing Crash and the respective disasters of the Novak and Holst administrations.

Also is any equivalent to the internet by 2021 and how much of a role does it play into everyday citizens lives?

In 2021, the equivalent to the Internet of our world is the ComboNet, while the closest equivalent to Google is the OptyCon (the legacy of a collaborative project between two US government departments and a US technology company in the late 2000s. Technology is somewhat less advanced in 2021 in comparison to our world. The analogous technology to OTL smartphones are only just coming on the market.
