Footnotes
[1] Trae Young had come to be seen as the expected first overall pick after the Foresters got the first pick in the draft. Media pundits and league insiders agreed that the best move for the Foresters would be to pair Giannis with a guard of the future and ultimately the organization agreed. Young is expected to be a good complementary player to Antetokounmpo, but after the draft many argued he wasn't the best player in the draft That remains to be seen.
[2] MPJ was originally considered the top prospect in this draft class, but with Vancouver more than capable at the forward position, he fell to the Boston Celtics. This marks the fourth high profile lottery selection in five years for the Boston Celtics, who have drafted since 2014: Joel Embiid (8th in 2014); Kristaps Porzingis (2nd in 2015); Donovan Mitchell (4th in 2017), and now MPJ. Even if the Celtics fail to get Embiid to return this off-season, they will have crafted one of the most talented cores in the league.
[3] Many people, especially his European fans, believe Luka Doncic should have been the consensus first pick in the draft. The young Euroleague champion from Serbia is expected to be a phenomenal player, but concerns about transitioning from Europe to the NBA mean he fell to third. The Hornets are hoping his fans, the ones who think he is a transcendent player, are right.
[4] Kobe retired at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season marking an NBA record 22 seasons played, entirely with the Los Angeles Lakers. The franchise failed to make the playoffs and is now fully in post-Kobe mode. This is their second top 5 pick in two years (the Lakers had the first overall pick in 2017). They chose power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. with the 4th pick to compliment Jayson Tatum (SF) and Tyler Ellis Jr. (C).
[5] The Aces take a gamble with Marcel Sonnet, another star from Europe, who has even more skeptics than Luka does. The Aces selection of Sonnet was mildly unexpected, but the frenchman is a sharpshooting guard with experience playing against professionals - he may very well prove the skeptics wrong.
[6] This pick was originally the Pistons pick until landing in the hands of the Phantoms. The Phantoms were not uberly impressed with the players of this draft, so when the 76ers approached with a trade proposal centered on swapping the pick for Louis Williams, they had to accept. Williams had cemented himself as a high tier scorer in the league and pairing him with Kevin Durant could take Baltimore to the next level. The 76ers went on to use the pick to draft Marvin Bagley III.
[7] For a while, DeAndre Ayton was thought to be a lock for a top 3 pick. Six teams didn't bite and he fell to seventh and the Washington Wizards, who hope he will complement their core of Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan (who missed most of last season).
[8] Many believe Grayson Allen should have been selected higher in the draft, but there are considerable concerns about his temperament, maturity and professionalism.
