Chapter 2: The day of the union

Jean-Jacques Dessalines was in one of the rooms of the National Palace. Dessalines was the representative of Saint-Domingue which became independent from France months before, he was meeting with the other representatives of the nations which became independent from the European empires.
There was uncertainty about what would happen to these nations but Thomas Jefferson proposed a union or alliance between all the nations to avoid European invasions. In a few hours he would start the first of several meetings where the future of these nations would be decided if they joined the newly formed United States or formed an alliance together. But it was clear to Dessalines that the issue of slavery could be very difficult to decide.
