WI:John McAfee attempts to/takes over the Government of Belize

John Macafee while in Belize bought out an entire security force of people with him purchasing and selling weapons to various people including gangs and police officers.

Some people thought that he would attempt to attempt to overtake the government of Belize

Now he never actually attempted to but what if he did?

How does this effect the 2010s

I can't say that he would be able to do so, but his compound was in a disputed area between Belize and Guatemala (along with half of the country). If he wanted to, he could (unofficially) declare the Republic of McAfeeland an independent state, a bit like a tropical Liberland. Or, he can try to pull a Bob Denard, placing the country under his defacto control with an army of mercenaries, gangsters, and the presidential guard working on his payroll. But judging by McAfee's numerous... eccentricities, we could see another Panama on our hands if that comes to pass.

If he’s able to defacto take over Belize I wonder if and when he decides to run for president how he’s going to use that?

Maybe if the Phoenix Foundation remained as large and powerful into the 21st century. They notably helped sponser the Republic of Vemerana seccessionists in Vanuatu in 1980, the Abaco Independence Movement in the Bahamas, and the Republic of Minerva in Tonga. A libertarian-inspired coup in Belize would be similar, albeit far more notable because of who was the primary backer behind it.

No, seriously, the British (who maintain a "British Army Training and Support Unit Belize", BATSUB, to both practise jungle warfare and also make it absolutely clear to Guatemala that Belize is not going to be a part of Guatemala) will ask him nicely to put down his toys and go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

If McAfee does not get with the programme, then there will be... trouble. Right here in River City.

Not least because Michael Ashcroft is both a person of influence with the Conservative party and also of significant import in Belize, and will not be happy with McAfee pissing in his porridge.

What? Venezuela is not even close in distance? You mean Guatemala? Or you mean Venezuela for Guyana which is also a completly different country from Belize?

Did Belize have the death penalty?
The answer is yes, so assuming he wasn't killed during his nonsensical coup he'd be executed afterwards, presumably by hanging. Though being slowly sliced up by broken CD's of his awful bloatware would be appropriate as would something involving whales...
Though the latter might garner protests. Many people like whales.

Aparently he sold the antivirus company with his name to a company called Intel Security in the 90's. He called it the worst software in the planet and lamented people associating him with it and sending him thousands of emails about it.

A short and small intervention where the US arrests the lunatic and puts the previous government back in charge.

MacAfee probably goes on trial for all the whale fucking. They probably have to pass a new law just for him.

I would love to read this TL, because ever since the Randian Katanga TL crash-ended, we have been missing some flat out over-the-top takeover third-world countries (sorry Belize) TLs.

Take over Belize? Nah that's too much.

Take over Ambergris Caye? Sure, why not. That's where his house was, it's an island, and it's physically separated from the rest of Belize.
