2018 Presidential Election

OOC: Another infobox set of events in the TWWverse

Y9wF8dQ.png

  • The Jerusalem Attacks (attempt to kill foreign leaders at the inauguration of Sawahili and then attack on the Atarot Airport in Jerusalem) have Israel and the US in the "belligerents" column since Secret Service agents killed one of the attackers and I assumed that the IDF would have tried to intercept the Syrian jets that attacked Atarot. Anrig was the IRL commander of the Swiss Guards who guard the pope at the time of the attack, and since the Swiss Guards are responsible for security inside the Holy City, I had him as the closest thing to a military commander for Jerusalem.
  • The "start time" of Zoey Bartlet's abduction isn't clear, since it's never mentioned in the show how long it was before the Secret Service realized Zoey was gone and found Molly O'Connor's body. The weapons used were never mentioned, but I figured they killed Molly O'Connor with a pistol (since it would have been easier to conceal). An agent briefing Bartlet's group when they reunite with Zoey says that the last one was "going for a weapon" when the FBI took him down, which I figured would be a long gun (the make and model is the same that was IOTL used in Columbine).
  • The amount for the "receipts" part of the Vinick campaign box is lifted from the OTL McCain 2008 one.
  • Wells v. Sorkin had previously been established as the Supreme Court case that legalized the readjustment of the presidential election cycle from OTL. It was established as being a challenge to the Special Election Act of 1986, and also that the act had somehow come after the court case.

The revised timeline is this: the constitutional crisis begun when Ronald Reagan fell into a coma in September 1985, whereupon Vice President George P. Bush became Acting President. Since Reagan couldn't resign (because he was in a coma), could not be removed permanently without an impeachment (which would very likely run into legal problems since Reagan couldn't participate in any way in an ensuing "trial"), Congress eventually hit upon abbreviating his second term to end after the 1986 midterms, changing the presidential election cycle. After negotiations between both parties, they pushed through the Special Election Act, which Acting President Bush signed in early January 1986, then the Supreme Court agreed to fast-track a case on the subject to end the crisis. Since striking down the act would have left the country without a permanent president for three years unless Reagan died or woke up, the Court pretty much all agreed to uphold the law to end Reagan's term and allow Congress to "reset" the presidential election cycle if such circumstances arise again.

The "laws applied" include the so-called "elastic clause" which the Burger Court relied on heavily since this was (and is) constitutionally very sketchy ground.

Just a quick question. Who was Aaron Wells? I know that they’re the petitioner in the case but what Lind of role did they hold that would allow the Court to feel that they had standing?

He was just a guy. The Court found he had standing since his state recorded that he voted in the 1984 election and given ballot secrecy laws, that was the only proof besides his sworn affadavit that he had voted for Reagan, whose term that would be truncated, that they could reasonably accept as grounds for standing in the case.

His name (like Aaron Wells') is a reference to the showrunners.

Civil Rights Act of 2019 narrowly passes Judiciary Committee, heads to full Senate

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Civil Rights Act of 2019 by a one-vote margin today, sending the bill to the full Senate. The committee voted 10-9 for the bill, which would add gender identity and sexual orientation to existing federal civil rights protections, with two abstentions. Three Republicans (Rob Buchanan of Virginia, Dylan Garrison of Ohio and Michael Rojas of New Mexico) voted in favor, while one Democrat (Bradley Denning of Oklahoma) voted against the bill. Senator Gabe Tillman (D-CA), who is a vocal supporter of the bill, was absent, attending the funeral of former Secretary of State Arnold Vinick, who represented California in the Senate for nearly a quarter-century (1983 to 2007). Chairman Dylan McNamara (R-MS) paired with Tillman, voting "present" instead of against the bill. Rachel Mears (D-WV) also voted "present", stating that she would "would be inclined to support portions of the bill" but had concerns about other, unnamed sections.

Has President Seaborn ever had to give visiting foreign dignitaries a tour of the White House? I can picture that scene. "The White House was built several years ago, mostly, if I'm not mistaken, out of cement. These chairs are fashioned from the lumber of a pirate ship captured during the Spanish American War."

Arnold Vinick laid to rest

Former Secretary of State Arnold Vinick was laid to rest at the family plot in Santa Paula, California on Tuesday.

Statesman from America and across the world paid tribute to him, including current President Sam Seborn, and two former President's who he served as Secretary of State Matthew Santos and Glen Walken.

"I remember when Arnie called me to concede. I could hear it in his voice that he was just as tired as iI was, but he insisted on not waiting. He told me that morning that the better man had won. But he was wrong. The better man lost that election, his service to our great nation before and after serving as irrefutable proof."- President Matthew Santos

"In the 243-year history of our great Republic, seventy men have had the distinction of serving as Secretary of State. Six of them when on to be President, and the very first one wrote the Declaration of Independence. But what Arnold Vinick accomplished in his six-years as our nation's chief diplomat will stand the test of time as the greatest in our nation's history. It was Arnold Vinick, and Arnold Vinick alone who brought peace to a region that had not seen it in over 6,000 years."- President Glen Allen Walken

"Secretary Vinick's commitment to a life of service and love of country transcended petty partisan politics. He will serve as the model of a public servant for generations to come. We last meet just before I decided to run for President at the funeral of Justine Avery. He defended me when the press kept asking questions If I was running for President. That was the measure of the man. He gave me sound advice about running, be yourself, and as he turned away, run a good campaign, but he said with a smile, I hope you lose of course. "- President Samuel Seaborn

"I've had the opportunity to today to hear everyone talk about what a great man my father was. What a great statesman he was. But to me, he was more than a Senator, or Secretary of State. To me, he was Dad."- Jennifer Vinick.

Surprised there wasn't a service in the Capitol Rotunda.

Vinick wasn't automatically entitled to a service in the Capitol Rotunda since he wasn't an ex-president, military commander or serving in Congress when he died.

Congress would very easily have voted to give him one if he and his family had wanted, but he made it clear that he didn't want an exemption to be made for him.

McColl gaining against Collins

Portland, Oregon- Oregon Secretary of State Candice McColl has seen a steady rise in the polls over the past month, as she now is within 10-points of Republican Governor Walter Collins. ACN's latest poll has the race at 54-44 in Collins' favor, but this is an sharp improvement from the 22-point deficit she faced only a month ago. Much of this has largely been attributed to McColl's claims that Governor Collins "attempted to fundamentally undermine our democracy" during the 2018 President Election when he overruled Secretary McColl's decision to call the election (and Oregon's 7 Electoral Votes) for then-Senator and Democratic Nominee Sam Seaborn. McColl's grassroots campaign has also begun roping in establishment endorsements, including former Governor Paul Chang.

Despite his lead decreasing in the polls, Governor Collins still remains the most popular governor in the United States, maintaining a 79% approval rating. Governor Collins was unreachable for comment as he is still out of state in California for the funeral of former United States Secretary of State Arnold Vinick.

Apollo 11 astronauts reunite on 50th anniversary of first moon landing

Fifty years after the first successful Moon landing, the two surviving Apollo 11 astronauts, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, reunited alongside other current and former astronauts in a visit to the White House. Alongside NASA Administrator Alexandra Moreau, and the two sons of the late Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong (who passed away in 2012), the delegation of astronauts met with President Sam Seaborn to discuss the nation's plans to return to the Moon by 2024 and then onward to Mars in the 2030s.

Seaborn, alongside First Lady Lauren Parker-Seaborn and Vice President Jack Hunter, engaged in the debate that arose among members of the assembled group to whether American space policy should return to the Moon to use as a launching-point for a potential Mars mission, or if it would be more feasible to go to Mars directly.

"We have the No. 1 rocket right now in the U.S. and we have the No. 1 spacecraft, and they cannot get into lunar orbit with significant maneuvering capability," Aldrin, 89, noted, in his criticism of NASA's plan to create a lunar satellite to use as a jumping-off point for future Mars missions. Collins, 88, voiced his support for a straight-to-Mars mission. The president seemed to take the lunar veterans' concerns under advisement, telling them his administration was "open to changing the nation's space policy...in consultation with NASA and Congress."

On July 20, 1969, at 4:17 PM, Aldrin and Armstrong touched down on the lunar Sea of Tranquility while Collins orbited the moon in the command module. Armstrong radioed NASA command, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.", indicating a successful landing. At 10:56 PM, Armstrong descended the ladder and stepped onto the lunar surface, becoming the first human to step foot onto an astronomical body besides the Earth. His "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," is arguably the most famous quote associated with space or exploration. Aldrin would join him minutes later, and the two collected numerous samples that were then returned to Earth for study.

Five subsequent Apollo missions would land on the moon, culminating in Apollo 17 in 1972. In total, 12 men walked on the moon, and another 12 orbited it without landing, as a result of the Apollo missions.

As part of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations, NASA aired a two-hour documentary film detailing the lead-up and flight of Apollo 11, while also detailing its future plans. Moreau also took the opportunity to unveil the name of the next lunar program, Artemis, named after the Greek goddess of hunting and twin sister of Apollo. Further celebrations both at Wapaketona, Ohio (Armstrong's hometown) and at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida also are taking place, with Vice President Hunter visiting the latter after the meeting in Washington.

'Seaborn, alongside First Lady Lauren Parker-Seaborn and Vice President Jack Hunter...'

Are their any plans for stories around Sam and Hunter. A sort of Obama/Biden, or Scalia/RBG, or Mulready/Baker relationship of political rival who become quite close?

First up, the governor's boxes for the 2019 & 2020 cycles:

Then, one of the most interesting recent gubernatorial elections in the TWWverse:

And finally, four other show characters get their infoboxes:

Cast (all previously established)
Kevin Nealon as Peter Gault
John Cusack as Jarrod Daniels
Luke Wilson as Adam De Haan
Annabeth Gish as Elizabeth Bartlet
Chris Noth as Andrew Long
Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ralph Gomez
Matthew Perry as Joe Quincy
Mark Feuerstein as Cliff Calley
Anna Deveare Smith as Nancy McNally

  • Both parties have chosen the head of their respective gubernatorial associations for the next year, since the deputy head of both the RGA & DGA then become the head the next year. I tried to pick casted governors as closely as possible to where the OTL heads of the DGA & RGA are for the 2019 & 2020 cycles.
  • Just a reminder for the 2020 box that the governors of both Washington (Sean Boone) and Maine (Paris Stray) were selected for positions in the Seaborn administration and that their successors belonged to the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively.
  • The county map for the 2016 Texas gubernatorial election box was created using results from the OTL 2006 gubernatorial election that saw two independent candidates get a combined 30%+ of the vote.
  • I created Joe Quincy's successor as (acting) Solicitor-General and Nancy McNally's predeccessor as UN ambassador out of whole cloth, along with several deputies. Everyone else listed was previously established.
  • Cliff Calley might be the only person to have served as deputy chief of staff in two presidential administrations and under presidents of two different parties. I had him as being born in the same place as his actor was and then moving to Virginia later, like former OTL governor Terry McAuliffe who like Calley was a high-ranking official in a Democratic administration before running for governor of Virginia.

I also gave him a wife and kids because Cliff is a good-looking, charming guy and, also I doubt he would get the GOP nomination for governor in Virginia if he were a never-married bachelor.

Labour leadership contenders clash in bad tempered first debate

The five contenders for the Labour leadership clashed in the first TV debate shown by the BBC last night. Ruth Butler, Jack Coll, Oliver Kendrick, Daniel Lamont, and Rachel Lilburn all put their cases to be the next leader of the party.

The front-runner Party Chairman Jack Coll came under attack from Oliver Kendrick and Daniel Lamont, whilst the most bitter exchange came between Kendrick and Lamont. Kendrick needed a break through performance and he certainly gave it "We need people to feel good about being a Labour supporter. After three straight election defeats I known that what the Tories fear the most is a Labour party which has courage to change. We need to make sure that our culture and our values are right for now. We cannot turn the clock back to 2011 and pretend the last eight years have not happended, we must also accept that the Tories have done some good things whilst in power. We cannot just wait for the Tories to implode after the Prime-Minister leaves office prior to the next election". That was widely regarded as an attack on both Jack Coll and Daniel Lamont. Coll said he was "the only candidate who can unite all sections of the party and get us to walk tall again. Yes we need change but we don't need a collective nervous breakdown. I will build on the excellent work laid down by Andrea (Benn). We also need to stop apologlsing for the last Labour government and get on with the job of getting Labour back into Government at the next election".

Daniel Lamont who has been campaigning on a move to the left said "we need to win back those voters that voted for the Socialist Alliance at the last two elections, with those voters we can win" which drew a laugh from Rachel Lilburn " So appealing to around 2% of the country will win us an election, live in the real world Daniel. You helped to cost us the 2013 General Election in a landslide with your plotting against Ed (Miller) during that campaign. We need a leader that appeals to those voters that voted for us in 2007 but have voted Tory at the last three elections, I can do that, on-one else here can".

The most heated exchange was between Lamont and Kendrick after the former Chancellor said Kendrick was "Tory light, and probably in the wrong party" with Kendrick hitting back "This is your problem Daniel, you threat people like me as a faker and a hypocrite. You are always right, you always see the Tories as the enemy, as "evil" I think you called them at a rally with the TUC last week, they are not evil, they are people we sometimes have a disagreement with. It is these types of remarks which got us into the mess of "smeargate" in 2011, where you attempted to smear a decent man in Richard Samuels, that shows you have bad judgement and cannot be trusted to be our leader, let alone Prime-Minister".

Ruth Butler did not have a good night in the minds of the pundits as she struggled with what the party who look like under her leadership and admitting that "she didn't pay much attention to tax rates".

Former Archbishop to Visit Rome.

The former Archbishop of York the Rt Revd Matthew Walsh will travel to Rome next week for meetings with both Pope Clement XV and Pope Emeritus Victor IV. This will be the first visit from a representative of the Church of England, since the Archbishop of Canterbury attended Pope Clements’s inauguration several weeks ago.

Archbishop Walsh, currently the principal of St Stephens House in Oxford, has long been both one of the Church of England’s leading Anglo-Catholics and leading Traditionalist Catholics. He was the Church’s main point of contact during ecumenical discussions with the Roman Catholic Church and worked with Pope Clement on various ecumenical committees.

There have been rumours recently that Archbishop Walsh may be considering joining the Roman Catholic Church but these have been denied by his office. St Stephens House was quick to confirm that this visit is “simply a catch up between old old friends.”

This could be the beginning of the "One World Church" with the Church of England coming back to the Roman Catholic Church. This would be remarkable since the split occurred in the Middle Ages. "The split between the Catholic Church and England occurred in 1534 after the pope denied King Henry VIII's request for a marriage annulment. More than the result of this single cause, the break with Rome and the creation of a new English church was driven by a combination of personal greed, financial temptation and true religious dedication." (https://classroom.synonym.com/caused-england-catholic-church-separate-6935.html)

Some might even speculate that this could be the precursor of events found in the Book of Revelation.

As a pastor and Bible scholar, I could see the connection between these "events" and the Word of God.

"And that's what I think about that." (Forest Gump)

Just a thought for consideration/discussion.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, how about we not venture off into wild speculation and Biblical prophecy based off one article about a former Anglican archbishop going to see the two living popes?
