How popular is the Republican? His/her performance seems pretty abysmal in New England.

December 2017 - Raul Castro announces, as a Christmas present to the nation, that he wants his successor to be chosen through a democratic, parliamentary election supervised by the EU. The map below shows the results as of March 1, 2018. Six lists form to contest the election:
Left-wing Nasties (a nickname that stuck from one of Raul's speeches condemning the "nasties who want to turn back the clock", like "deplorables") - highly orthodox communists who object to Raul's experiments with liberalization and privatization and who are offended by the increase in inequality and fear an increase in gangsterism and crime ("They're turning Cuba into Jamaica!").
Broad Front - the current mainstream of Cuban communism with some capitalism as well as some Nordic model parties. They have doubled down on environmental rhetoric and use red and green (Christmas colors, amusingly) on their banners and ads.
Liberal Democratic Alliance - European-style liberals. Believe Cuba should be "a European country in the Americas". Most popular in affluent suburbs and metropolitan cities.
Christian Democratic Parties - European-style Christian Democrats. Strongly represented in and around Camagüey, a city strongly associated with Catholicism and visited by Pope John Paul II. Still a bit to the left of their European counterparts.
Republican Alliance - American-style conservatives, mainly found in major tourist areas and among the families of exiles. They're mockingly called the "Hialeah Party". They probably would've been able to kick the commies out of government if it wasn't for Trump's election.
Right-wing Nasties - Unlike their far-left counterparts, they have not embraced this name, instead calling themselves "The First Order". Basically fascists, but viciously anti-American and anti-Trump (as Latin American nationalists). Strongest base is near Guantanamo Bay, which they've vowed to close by force if needed.

No. I can't imagine any scenario where Carter does that poorly in the South. And it's not an alternate 1976 either.
No. There's really no plausible scenario where Carter does that poorly in the South in '76.
It's not that the Republican is unpopular, it's that the Democrat is very popular and his running mate is also from New England.
I've talked a lot about how George Wallace was basically unelectable, but here is what the map would probably look like if he had won. In this scenario, Wallace is the Democratic nominee in 1972, he picks a solid running mate (Jimmy Carter), and the Watergate scandal breaks about 6 months before the election. Wallace and Carter capitalize on their relative outsider status and promise to bring decency to Washington, winning narrowly over Nixon. Wallace campaigns as a moderate on racial issues, and largely avoids talking about them at all. Wallace gets Solid South numbers in the Deep South, and wins every Southern state, making him the first Democrat since FDR to do so. Ohio is the tipping point state, with Wallace winning it by about 1.5%.

It looks basically like OTL 1976 except Wallace does even better in the South than Carter did.

It's really interesting how Saxony was the heartland of the SPD in 1912 but is the heartland of both the AfD iOTL and the far-right in this map nowadays.

The anti-Muslim party is essentially the AfD, but since there aren't conspiracies about powerful Muslims running the world I tried one with anti-Americans instead. Note that they're weaker in the East but stronger in the West, particularly either in SPD heartlands or in major urban areas.
No... This is way off if you're referring to the Wallace vs. Nixon map. If you mean the random county map I posted, it's still off by quite a bit.
Another map for my Rutherford scenario. This one depicts all of the counties which Rutherford won. By my best calculation, he carried 2,042 counties to Trump's 1,071. This includes all 487 counties won by Hillary Clinton in OTL 2016 and 1,555 counties which Trump carried. The light blue counties are Clinton-Rutherford counties; dark blue are Trump-Rutherford ones:

My not particularly serious alternate realignment, which was based on coming up with party names which would usually be thought of as oxymoronic in the American political context. This shows the 2012 election, between Joe Biden (Progressive Nationalist), Mitt Romney (Liberal Conservative), and Rick Santorum (Evangelical Socialist)
I'm thinking that the Progressive Nationalists are a (mostly) socially liberal, protectionist party, focussed on the Rust Belt and the East Coast, mostly - the Liberal Conservatives are center/center-right, federalist, and relatively internationalist, while the Evangelical Socialists are socially conservatives in favor of a big welfare state, especially for whites. I made two maps - one showing the 2012 election, split almost exactly 3 ways by EV, and the map with swing states left out.
I figure that CA/NY/CT/RI are swing PN/LC, TX/FL/KS are swing LC/ES, IN is swing PN/ES, and IA/VA are three-way swing.
