Chapter One: The Fall and Rise of Harvey LeRoy

------------

March 1989 should have and would have been the Honeymoon period of George Herbert Walker Bush. America's 41st President had been reaching for the stars since November 8th, 1988, when he stomped Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis in a race he should've lost. Hell, he would have lost had it not been for Harvey LeRoy Atwater, famously (or infamously depending on who you were) called Lee. The Bush Campaign in 1988 was destined for defeat, with a 17 point deficit in the polls. But they turned it around, arguably because of Atwater, and won 40 out of 50 states. It was truly a comeback. But now, Lee Atwater, the man who had effectively spent his career in Washington fighting for the powerful, was now fighting for his life.

January 1989 should have and would have been Lee Atwater's shining moment. He was destined to be the next Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Until January 19th, 1989. A day before Bush's inauguration, Atwater, who had attended a fundraiser gala for Missouri Senator Jack Danforth, suffered a stroke. What was initially a stroke turned into potential Brain Cancer and a potential Brain Tumor. D.C. was stopped in it's tracks.

This led to months of vigorous treatment to destroy the illness. Being treated by D.C.'s finest (recommended by now President Bush), Lee Atwater, who had fought a life threatening illness many expected him to succumb to, had survived. By early April, he returned to the White House, despite being somewhat weakened due to the intense treatment, to a standing ovation. Lee Atwater was back. The Democrat's nightmare had been restored to full potential.

And the worse part of Atwater's return for the Democrats would be one simple thing: election season was alive again, and Lee Atwater never ignored election season.
