Disclaimer: I didn't shuffle Washington. This timeline will have to assume very limited butterflies in order for later presidents to exist.
2. Thomas Jefferson 1797-1801
Republican Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson (from HBO's John Adams)
Thomas Jefferson won the election of 1796 by 1 electoral vote and became the 2nd President of the United States. The runner up in the election, John Adams, became Vice President for a third term. During Jefferson's presidency, the United States grew closer with France as Jefferson expressed support for the Revolutionaries. This had the effect of antagonizing Great Britain. The ensuing disruption of American transatlantic trade resulted in waning popularity for Jefferson and his Republicans. Federalists capitalized on this and began a vigorous attack campaign on Jefferson's administration that culminated in the election of 1800, when Vice President Adams defeated President Jefferson. Today, Jefferson is commemorated on the 2 dollar bill.
3. John Adams 1801-1805
Federalist Paul Giamatti as John Adams (from HBO's John Adams)
In 1800, John Adams finally won the presidency on his fourth bid, running with Charles C. Pinckney of South Carolina. Adams immediately moved to cut off American aid to France but did not move to directly align the United States with Britain. For this he was criticized by members of his own party, specifically Alexander Hamilton. During his four years as president, Adams masterfully steered the United States down a narrow course between Britain and France. Despite maintaining peace and American neutrality, Adams lost the election of 1804 thanks to attacks from within and without. Historian frequently rank Adams among the upper tier of presidents for his relatively incident free presidency but he remains an obscure figure among the public.
