if your having trouble getting republicans in to fire the ACW, try changing voting rights to wealth if you have the spare cash, also tarriff and tax rates also have an effect on the people's voting habbits, IIRC before any socialist parties show up, if you set poor tax rate to be 100% or there...

actually, IIRC Britain and America weren't all that friendly until after the war, and even then there was bitterness after their trusted ally demanded that they dissassemble their Empire, effetively removing Britain from the stage as a world leading colonial power.
