I have looked at a bunch of towns and cities that back in the day could have had growth limits put around them. A lot of the towns would have benefited from a tighter growth, leading to downtowns and mainstreets surviving.
If the towns grew to the established growth line, maybe smaller towns...
I like to imagine a scenario where Chrysler goes bankrupt in 1996 and a surviving International Harvester buys up the truck/suv division to get back into the automotive market. A surviving AMC could buy up other pieces and Toyota gets the rest.

I enjoy reading and thinking about the bright future the US could have possibly had. It also makes me overjoyed that more people believe in more city density and less emphasis on suburbs.
Would the downtowns and mainstreets of the cities be saved in this TL? The interstate system helped to drive more people out of the cities and into suburbs; strip malls and disintegration of most downtowns. It seems as though it would have at least saved some of the nostalgia.
I was wondering if you were going to go into the next decade; 2010-2020. It might be a little challenging, but from this TL, it seems relatively stable. Also, did the U.S. get involved in the current 2 warzone situation ITTL that is going on in OTL?
Would the U.S. have ever engaged in manifest destiny to secure a economic or war riddled Mexico or Latin America. Also would Panama have become a state if the U.S. had kept it? I'm not trying to make the U.S. land hungry, just reasonable potential new land areas.
What states could the United States have in the year 2010. I would be keeping most of the 50 states except maybe merging the Dakotas together and merging Idaho into Montana, Utah, and Washington. An example of a plausible new state would be Puerto Rico.
