The idea here is that the terms of the Secret Treaty of Dover leak out shortly after it is made (1670).
Does this lead to Charles II being executed? A restoration of the Protectorate?
Philip may die earlier than OTL, of sorrow. However, assuming he doesn't, Louis IX will succeed to the throne at the age of nine, ironically the same age as Henry III of England.
Both things that may improve the relations between England and France in the medium term...
It's 1217. After the passing of the little regretted John, peace is finally returning to the England, under its boy king Henry III; but the war also claimed the life of prince Louis, only son to Philip II of France. The aged king always opposed this fool's errand which now cost him his heir...
Frederick can probably secure the imperial throne for his grandson Philip after his death, but it won't be cheap! Philip will be a 15 year old with no government experience. Winning the election is only half the battle: without proper safeguards he might become a plaything in the hands of the...
Matilda was an extremely talented administrator, she was quick-thinking, creative, and even a decent general (despite the gender norms of her day and her total lack of military education). But she was a terrible politician with a knack for alienating the people she needed, when she needed them...
But you're assuming Matilda still marries Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, after the death of her first husband. That's not a point I considered in my first post, but if she manages to get the HRE regency, I think she's more likely to pursue a German match.
And she should have been IOTL! But as we know, that proved untenable.
A bit of a stretch, I know. I based this bit on the fact that at that age, Matilda was already ruling Italy on behalf of her husband.
Thanks for your answer :)
Keep 'em coming, people!
A maybe not super plausible scenario, but quite entertaining.
This would not be the Henry II of OTL (son of Geoffrey Plantagenet) but a son of Empress Matilda with her first husband Heinrich V, HRE, born sometime shortly after the White Ship disaster. Heinrich V dies as per OTL in 1125, and...
Wouldn't some other controversy just take its place? Before iconoclasm, Eastern Rome had been in the grip of endless christological disputes, which were only solved because the heretics found themselves part of the Caliphate. The common people had no outlet and no way to participate in civic...
Massive immigration was already taking place. According to a recent paper, Visigothic-era southern Spaniards had experienced a massive genetic influx from North Africa compared to the middle Roman era population.
Protestant Northern Italy. The Tuscan prestige dialect becomes associated with popery, protestant princes commission translations of the Bible from the original Hebrew and Greek directly into Piemontese, Lombard, Venetian so that every one of their subjects will be able to understand and study...
There'd be rumours. If the child does not resemble Henry, those rumours might swell into an open rebellion against "FitzQueen" eventually. James II got deposed over much more flimsier accusations.
