I would expect the germans to go with a way lighter defensive armament on a bomber that is supposed to be fast but overall a really cool blend of B-29 and Ar 243!
Its got the same general lines with the very clean fuselage, comparativly large vertical stabilizer, gently swept back wings and "missing" horizontal stabilizer, but I think the nose is too different and the whole thing has to be nearly an order of magnitude bigger than the 163, the comet is...
Thats obviously based on the He 119 experimental high speed plane, which has only a single, "coupled" engine, how and where are you going to cram in another one of those huge things? The resulting drivetrain will also be awfully complex.
I think the 119 ist ultimately a plane not really suited...
Ironically I see the whirlwind more as an analogue to the Falke, as its also single seat and lacks the defensive armament that is part of the core definition of a Zerstörer in the german sense. Its overall much closer to a "regular" heavy fighter (if a really heavily armed one for the timeframe).
What do you see as the Zerstörer equivalents for the other nations? For France I can see the Br. 690 serie and the Potez 63 with very similiar in concept. The soviet union had the development that ultimately let to the Pe-2 and Pe-3. Britain had the Beaufighter, but from what I can gather that...
The problem is that the Zerstörer concept itself is deeply flawed, but the germans did not really have an opportunity to really notice that before it was too late for a major course correction on design and procurement. The idea looks valid in the interwar years when an aircrafts performance is...
Did the germans actually capture french engines or production capacity theroff with sufficent power for one of the "mainline" aircraft? I know they later retooled some factories to produce more powerfull german engines, but from my admittedly somewhat limited knowledge the most significant...
The Ar 232B ran on Bramo Fafnir engines, which are already a "low demand" sort of engine and they are also a good ~200 HP more powerfull than the 14M, so you might end up with a pretty underpowered design.
I would overall agree with the plans pu forward in the thread, the Hs 129 (even if I have...
I know the Italiens cant be all that choosy with the potential options they have, but that sounds like a very quick way to loose a lof of both aircraft and trained pilots, two things the Italians dont really have an abundance of.
Edit: Im not entirely sure how long the ranges involves actually...
Oh sorry I think I was not clear there: I would expect all of these nations going at it alone. Without the bridge building during the wars its likely that you will have competition in this field rather than cooperation. This of course may vary widely depending on how your timeline actually looks...
A lot would depend on the trajectories the different countries take in the absence of the world wars and that is very difficult to predict without some more details about the envisioned POD and timeline. Austria-Hungary or the Ottoman for example might very well collapse even in the abscense of...
The early day fighter version carried 4 x MG 17 and 2 x Mg FF/M later on replacing the FF/Ms with Mk 151/20s. The 30 mm cannons really only come into play in 43, so long after the battles of norway and britain are over and other potential cannon carrier aircraft are available. The only versions...
Isnt the the DB 609 also extremly long? Combined with its lower power per weight that might make for a very awkward and inefficent aircraft design.
The overall profile reminds me a bit of the P-39, would a similiar engine instalation help with the overly long engine or would you just end up...
I think there are a few good reasons why the 109 was chosen over the 112 and OTL has proven pretty conclusively that the Bf 109 was a very good and very adaptable airframe. It was also very well suited for large scale industrial production, which is a point we should not overlook in this...
