  1. The Great War of 189-: A Forecast

One of those late 19th C, books that tried to look into the future and see what the next war would be, of interest for actually using the phrase 'Great War' at one point and for featuring a France-Russia vs Germany, Austria, Italy the Ottomans & Great Britain conflict. Quite a few names familiar...
  2. Post-Doomsday pop culture

I can I can see that kind of thing happening. Certainly in the literary fiction written after WWII, many of the main action writers (e.g. Douglas Reeman/Alistair Maclean & I've read others) started off with material that was an attempt to deal with their wartime experiences. I will also add...
  3. Photos from 1983: Doomsday

Two images from Operation Anadyr, the bandit suppression operation south-east of Mazyr. In the first a vehicle of the 1st Armored Battalion flattens a log built bunker. The second is shortly after the operation concluded, the vehicle in the background is the battalion command tank.
  4. Photos from 1983: Doomsday

Another photograph taken prior to the large scale Belarusian anti-bandit operations to the south-east of Mazyr
  5. The Bundesgrenzschutz (1951 - 2005)

I've not seen Metal Slug, but I have seen the film Bridge of Dragons which pulls off the same thing, all the 'goon level' soldiers wear WWII era German uniforms while driving around in 1960s era Russian built trucks with the Red Star replaced with '666'.

  7. Upcoming AH books

Thanks, looked at the 'blurb' and I already judge it a lesser story than it could have been.
  8. The Bundesgrenzschutz (1951 - 2005)

I've found a blog post giving details of WWII (& WWII) derived equipment used by the German Bundesgrenzschutz during it's lifetime. There are several images in the post which thanks to the BSGs use of the M35 Stalheim (& the later M35/53 version) which have a distinctly disorienting quality, the...
  9. Upcoming AH books

Same here, but I've never read Mirage, can you give me the authors name?
  10. Upcoming AH books

I've just spotted something that has not made Uchronia yet... The Ottoman Secret by Raymond Khoury Amazon
  11. The Battle of Texel (1918) - Twilight of the Gods

I've found a video online covering the 'converged' results of a series of 9 wargames that fought out a hypothetical battle between the High Seas & Grand Fleets based on the assumption that the Germans 'last raid' actually came off rather than ending in a welter of mutiny. There is a lot of...
  12. Not Strictly Alt-Hist, but interesting

Here is a a link to the film at the Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/36Hours1965 At about 40 minutes in you get hear the dates the fictional version of WWII ended (VE Day: 21/11/44, VJ Day ??/02/45).
  13. Not Strictly Alt-Hist, but interesting

I found a rather interesting film from the mid-1960s over on the Internet Archive. '36 Hours' is loosely based on a Roald Dahl story entitled 'Beware of the Dog'. It sees the Germans launch an elaborate hoax to convince a kidnapped US army officer that the war is over (And the Allies Won...)...
  14. James Thurber's "If Grant Had Been Drinking at Appomattox"

I looked for the episode on YouTube, all I found was this trailer...
  15. James Thurber's "If Grant Had Been Drinking at Appomattox"

This classic tale of things going just 'a little awry' just got a mention at the "Emerging Civil War Blog", they have included the whole tale in their post and included a link to a dramatization on YouTube...
