  1. When the Wind Blew: a P&S Open Thread

At least you were spared getting it on your phone, too. https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/wireless-emergency-alert-test-1.4923636
  2. Would you have lasted in 1983?

Well, in 1983, I was 15 and living in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, one of those cities that could have gone either way, on the bubble of the target list. When The Day After aired, our local media had a field day debating whether we’d be on a Soviet target list. The closest larger cities...
  3. Rumsfeldia: Fear and Loathing in the Decade of Tears

It appears that OTL Rumsfeld has just published a book about Gerald Ford’s administration. I’ll admit I have not yet read it (or seen it available), but the Washington Post reviewed it on Sunday...
  4. When the Wind Blew: a P&S Open Thread

Sweden has updated its version of Protect and Survive and is distributing it to all homes. Interestingly, it is being printed in both Swedish and English. It is entitled Om krisen eller kriget kommer (If Crisis or War Comes)...
  5. Protect & Survive Miami: End of Watch

Getting well comes first! Imagine the poor soul who has this happen to him in P&S post-attack.
  6. Winter Of Discontent: The Confederate Elections Of 2013

Please make this game better than its OTL counterpart... I'm guessing Kendrick Lamar isn't the halftime performer, especially if President Newton G. is in attendance.
  7. There Is No Depression: Protect and Survive New Zealand

Echoing On the Beach, how about petrol as something that can be had for a certain price, but certainly isn't used as freely as it was pre-1984. On the one hand, the technology behind the electric car will take much longer to come, but in a P&S world, there would be more urgency to develop it.
  8. Rumsfeldia: Fear and Loathing in the Decade of Tears

We are truly living in the Gumboverse now that this term is being thrown around. I was wondering now long it would take to see the N-B words. http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/duke-psychiatrist-america-having-nervous-breakdown
  9. When the Wind Blew: a P&S Open Thread

Richest city left is probably Melbourne. Largest one is presumably São Paulo. Indeed, there's never been a "Protect and Survive: Brazil." Probably the world's most populous country at the end of 1984. Country still governed by a dying military regime being challenged by a democracy movement...
  10. Protect & Survive Miami: End of Watch

SOUTHCOM moved to its current Doral headquarters in September 1997. Before that, it was headquartered in Panama (in the Canal Zone, actually). Its area of responsibility has never included American soil.

For the record, this week brought just the latest installment in Life Imitates Gumboverse... https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/21/us/politics/trump-pardon-himself-presidential-clemency.html
  13. The Eagle Down Under (1983: Doomsday TL 2016-2030)

I noticed a news item on the ABC website this morning that could almost have come right out of this timeline: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-07/we-dont-need-a-map-film-explores-southern-cross-use-and-abuse/8594120
  14. When the Wind Blew: a P&S Open Thread

Japan has issued an update of its version of "Protect and Survive" in response to events on the Korean Peninsula. It mentions a "ten-minute warning." http://www.kokuminhogo.go.jp/en/pdf/protecting.pdf
  15. When the Wind Blew: a P&S Open Thread

I had the very same thought over the past two episodes, which are stated to take place in February, 1984. The main decision in a story would be whether they stay in Virginia or try to get back to the Soviet Union before the balloon goes up. Paralleling the show, I'd say they stay despite...
