    Miscellaneous >1900 (Alternate) History Thread

I don't suppose anyone would be willing to look over this scenario I made a couple years back for believability? I'm mostly wondering about what potential figures in the Soviet government might have been willing to try a palace coup and negotiate a settlement with anarchists/non-Bolshevik...

What's the REAL reason Polynesians didn't colonise Australia?

How do you know that Polynesians didn't reach the coast of Australia and, finding a much larger group of humans already living there whose lifestyle worked out just fine, set up a small outpost that eventually assimilated into the surrounding area? Before any of you say genetics, it's not like...

AHQ: Cases where radical cultural or social changes occurred?

Agreed--largely. Wikipedia mentions that the invention of antibiotics made treating STDs easier, which led to alterations in sexual behavior. And while these inventions undoubtedly helped make the Sexual Revolution possible, I think we shouldn't underestimate the contribution of people like...

AHQ: Cases where radical cultural or social changes occurred?

It's after 1900, but I think the Sexual Revolution might count. It's not quite to the point where I'd call Western society before and after different societies, but there was a pretty stunning turnaround in some aspects of that society. The increase in acceptance of sex outside marriage and...

AHQ: What is the Exact Series of Events that made Modern Egalitarian -ish Societies Possible ?

This is basically just Orientalism. There are egalitarian interpretations of Christianity. There are also egalitarian interpretations of all these other religions/philosophies you have mentioned, and there are authoritarian interpretations of Christianity (for almost all of its history, these...

AHQ: What is the Exact Series of Events that made Modern Egalitarian -ish Societies Possible ?

You can, and often did, have egalitarian unindustrialized or agrarian societies. There were egalitarian movements in hierarchical egalitarian societies. While these movements did face difficulties and were often suppressed, they weren't easily suppressed either. These societies didn't look like...

Opiates for the masses: government booze and drugs for social control

It's true that many rulers have been short-sighted, but I don't think any of them would be quite that short-sighted.

Opiates for the masses: government booze and drugs for social control

If everyone is intoxicated, you can't get efficient work out of the population and they have fewer inhibitions about causing problems. Even if it helps with avoiding revolutions, it cuts into the ability of the upper classes to maintain an orderly society and extract revenue.

WI: The Maori go to South America instead of New Zealand

Why weren't better boat building and navigation technologies diffused? Was it likely because they just weren't as useful in South America?

'Blank slates': Scarcely attested persons or nations you think deserve a timeline

Kuhikugu certainly deserves a timeline of its own. Pre-Columbian city in the middle of the rainforest, a fairly large one, but there's no written records of it. Not sure how developed the oral traditions around the place still are, either.

Lands of Red and Gold, Act II

Did Jared tell the general audience what was up with Clements yet? The contest to figure it out was three and a half years ago.

    Carl Linnaeus and Pelicans

Because people used to think pelicans feed their young by piercing themselves and offering up their blood. Linnaeus (correctly) thought this was absurd and obviously false. I've heard some people say he thought pelicans didn't exist because he had no knowledge of "the New World bird" but this...

How would a modern 21st century Nazi Germany look like?

You are giving settlers entirely too much credit here.

How would a modern 21st century Nazi Germany look like?

This happened because while the USA was genocidal, the USA was less systemic in its physical genocide than Nazi Germany. The Nazis have no intent on leaving anyone around who can try and get Germans to disavow the Holocaust. They might fail anyway when it comes to queer people and the disabled...
