The state of Thule is a strange state. Located in the very far north of the Commonwealth of Hyperborea, Thule is cold, mountainous and harsh. Forst much of the past 80 years, Thule has been dominated by the Northern League, a cultural/political/religious organization run by Olaf Eikmeier. The Northern League classifies itself as "volkish theosophy", mixing Germanic neo-paganism and modern Theosophy. The Northern League has been run through its entire history by 116 year-old Olaf Eikemier, who's been the Governor of Thule four times having served as governor for 49 out of the past 69 years, and he was previously the Speaker of the Territorial Assembly before satehood. He's also been a U.S. Senator since statehood, though he's never taken his seat. He's been expelled from the Senate seven times for absenteeism and for also serving as governor, but each time, he's been appointed or elected his own successor (the Senate has effectively given up trying to remove him, with the last explusion having come in 2101). Despite having never taken his seat, Eikmeier does have a staff at his D.C. office, though many Senators feel that it's not as much as a congressional staff as it is a team of missionaries and pagan priests.

The Northern League has a tight grip on the political and cultural life of Thule. Visitors often comment on just how alien and foreign Thule feels when compared to the rest of Hyperborea and Galileo. Traditional American civic society (Democratic and Republican parties, Columbianism, Christianity, Rotary Club, etc.) are found clustered in the northern region of Thule around the port city of Archangel. The Minutemen have little pressence in Thule, with most security duties handled by the Thule National Guard which largely operate seperately from the overall Hyperborea National Guard command structure. There have been numerous federal investigations into Eikmeier (tax evasion, tax fraud, voter fraud, voter intimidation, embezzlement, polygamy, child sexual abuse, kidnapping and murder), but all attempts to investigate have been stimmied and have gone nowhere.

Decided to make another infobox, this time of Salinas' partner and Depression-era Chancellor, Cristina Benitez. She's a very important part of Salinas' life, and vice versa.

A Different Twenty-Seventh

Dominic LeBlanc's term as prime minister was noted for its tone of stability compared to what Canadians had grown accustomed to in the nearly 15 years without a federal majority government. The prime minister similarly did not attempt to make many waves, still viewing the political environment as fragile and not wanting to endanger his majority. Instead, the government quietly returned several agencies to their pre-Campbell level of regulation. The only controversial action the Liberals took was, in contravention to previous Canadian policy of accepting refugees from war-torn and impoverished nations, was to deny refugees from the crumbling North Korean state from settling in Canada until 2020. Despite being derided as heartless by the NDP and some members of his own caucus, the Conservatives and most Liberals (and eventually most Dippers) came to grudgingly agree that the move was prudent after numerous reports of the severe lack of basic skills the refugees from the neo-feudal totalitarian nation had and the massive effort that neighboring South Korea and China had to use just to bring them up to speed in the 21st century.

Bill Blaikie suddenly announced his resignation from the New Democratic leadership in late 2011 (partially to keep media attention on his party in the run-up to 2012) and Peter Stouffer was elected to replace him. Stouffer then secretly began implementing the same strategy Audrey McLaughlin had attempted 20 years before: attempting to make Quebec into an NDP stronghold and dislodge the remaining Bloc Québécois MPs.

LeBlanc ran the 2012 campaign as continuing a "stable, safe and inclusive" Canadian government. Jim Prentice and the Conservatives managed to cover some ground with dissatisfied voters, but not nearly enough to make any real headway.

The Conservatives managed to gain 11 seats, but the Liberals managed to retain the same number of seats due to vote-splitting in Quebec. Similarly, the New Democrats gained seats in Quebec, but their focused attention on that province meant the Conservatives were able to poach more ridings in the prairies and British Columbia than the NDP gained in Quebec. The Greens finally elected their first MP as party leader Elizabeth May won a seat in British Columbia. The Bloc Québécois was finally swept from parliament, as new leader Pierre Paquette and the three other remaining Bloc MPs all lost their seats.

With Canada's party system beginning to stabilize and regional parties out of parliament for the first time in over twenty years, a united and stable Canada looked towards a brighter future...

A Different Twenty-Seventh

The Senate of Canada had been slightly reformed in the Meech Lake Accord that saw Quebec ratify the federal constitution. Now, provincial assemblies would choose who would represent the provinces in the senate instead of the prime minister. Almost immediately upon realizing that they would now be able to gain senators, the New Democratic Party reversed its position from wanting the senate abolished to grudging acceptance of the upper house's existence and work to make the senate elected by proportional representation. The Bloc Québécois, as the federal associate of the Parti Québécois (one of Quebec's two largest parties), saw a ferocious intra-party dispute emerge after several vacancies began occurring during a PQ majority in Quebec, between those who wished to appoint senators and those who wanted to instead put forth a policy of abstentionism to the indirectly elected senate. In the end, the pro-appointment side won and the Bloc began appointing senators along with the other federal parties.

The Senate, upon the convening of the 43rd parliament that was elected in 2012:

Thanks. That wraps up Canada as well as A Different Twenty-Seventh. Had a bit more Canadian elections in there than I thought there would be starting out, but I think it turned out ok.

As a Canadian, may I say that you did fine work, and I hope the experience allowed you to learn more about our politics :)

Volkish Theosophy sounds like the best thing ever.

Dat crazy pagan magic.

Volkish Theosophy is very strange and very weird. Probably wouldn't feel out of place in early 20th century Germany, but it's significantly less racist and anti-semetic. Very cult-like, however.
