Now that both World Wars are mapped, there's something I'd like to work on before I go on: planning the rest of the maps by dividing History into periods.
It's a personal interpretation, so take it for what it is. As usual, if anyone has any suggestion, opinion, flame, feel free to comment.
Here's how it works: History in general will be divided into four big eras, that will be divided in their own right into smaller ages.
The four main eras are:
THE ERA OF KINGS (From Ancient Egypt to the Minoans, approximately 5300-1650 BCE)
THE ERA OF WARRIORS (From the Micenaean to the Romans, approximately 1600BCE-313CE)
THE ERA OF PROPHETS (Late Antiquity, Middle Ages, Early Modernity, approximately 313CE-1760CE)
THE ERA OF SCIENCE (mid-1700s to today)

EDIT: Seen it, and loved it. Not so bad a scenario, as far as Grimdark goes. I like the Scottish Britain even if it's under discontinuous Chinese influence (Wallace against the Song has a certain... ring to it) and the French/Scot dominated Europe. The purple blob between Greece and the Balkans is clearly Eastern Rome, but I can't really see if it's an Italian based empire with eastern vassals (in which case the Eastern Schism might have failed or never happened, but Rome itself appears to be a Frankish protectorate, so is Neaples TTL Bizanthium?) or if Southern Italy is a Roman territory (maybe under TTL Pope equivalent)

That's quite likely, as the Goddess-Empress Victoria is sure to play a major role in some future Steampunk Grimdark scenario, maybe alongside Primarch Holmes and Nemo Mechanicus

Starting with the Era of Kings, I was planning eight maps so far, I'm not sure of the exact years but I'm using @shearsforest 's suggestions as a guidelines. More may be added later, as I'm aware this is an incomplete and partial reconstruction (No India or China at this point, open to suggestions)

MAPPING THE ERA OF KINGS
This early in history, we may need only one section of the ICS to map everything, the one Qazse aptly named "Anatolia and Fertile Crescent". I don't think we need to create any new color for it, if anything existing colors from other sections may be borrowed.
The real challenge is, at this point, there is no clear definition of "State" as we may understand it.
In the Era of King, a "state" was the territory controlled by, or the people that gathered around, a powerful chieftan that controlled a significant amount of a significant resource (water, arable land, an easily defended position...)
we don't know exactly how this territory was controlled, and we only have an approximate idea of its extension, so the usual border, internal border, protectorate, territory just doesn't work.
To make matter more complicated, said protostates were not static, but get increasingly more complex as time goes, forcing us to gradually adapt our convention. I haven't developed a reliable system to track those changes just yet, for the time being, i think its more convenient to split the Era in more manageable periods:
3100 (3300?)-1650: Dynastic Period (it starts roughly at the same time in Egypt and Mesopotamia, a little earlier in India)
4000-3100/5500-3300: Predinastic Period; consistent enough in Egypt and Mesopotamia, with reciprocal influence, while India follows its own pattern but may have influenced both
circa 5500 (5700?) 4000 (4200?): Protohistory. The dates in parenthesis are meant to introduce the Vinca Civilisation, partly contemporanean to that of India but already disappeared before the end of Predinastic period in Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Roughly, I think a map set in, say, 5500 should feature both India (Harappa) and Vinca, with a rough extent for both, and not much else. At this point, I'd use the color for the Banat for Vinca, as it's not associated with any existing modern state. The Protoveneti/Republic of Venice is also possible, but with no clear rule of succession (that is, who inherits that color once its original owner has disappeared) that's a risky move.
I think that only the color should be used, not the border (since as i said, it wasn't a distinct political entity) possibly a base outline with a lighter interior

Let me sort out the protohistory first. The necessity may arise to add some new color there. I'm planning to do some editing to Sheardforest's list. While I have no plans for Westeros, I was planning to map the Age of Conan from near the beginning, and Middle Earth could be given a go too.

After examining Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, ancient India and even the roots of Old Europe, I thought that the next logical step would be to add ancient China.
Actually... not.
Turns out ancient China is not nearly so ancient as one may think.
You have to wait at least a thousand years after the first dynasties in Egypt and Mesopotamia to even get a glimpse of early dynastic China.
The first Chinese Emperor to have some sort of Historicity is Yu the Great, founder of the semi-mythical Xia dynasty. According to Archeological records, a protohistoric Chinese culture that may have been the Xia dynasty existed between circa 1950 or 1920 BCE to 1700 BCE, when the fully historic Shang take over.
That sounds pretty shabby compared to Egypt and Sumer, and even more if we add Harappa and Vinca.
We are leaving China out for now, and concentrate on an area that goes from south-east Europe to north-west India, followed by the gradual development of Sumer and Egypt between 4000 and 3100 BCE.
