By 1980 the tensions between Tom Baker and John-Nathan Turner had reached their height. JNT’s decision to take the show in a different direction irked Baker and Layla Ward. Janet Fielding’s arrival as Tegan was also problematic.
There was also the US. Paramount had seen how older stories had been popular and wanted in. In 1978 an agreement as reached with the BBC to co-produce the show with the possibility of some stories set in the USA. The issue was that Baker was very popular on the other side of the Atlantic and his decision to quit caused some consternation in Hollywood but there was no turning back. The fifth Doctor’s first series would be under the co-production. But who would be the new time lord?
