Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

FLAG CHALLENGE #258: Kuku Lau

This challenge is influenced by one of the original map challenges from 2007.

Recent genetic studies show the possibility of intermingling between Polynesians and native South Americans located in north-west South America. With the knowledge of possible staple food exchanges between South America and Polynesia furthering the possibility of contact. Your challenge is to make a flag for a nation set in the Americas (North or South) with an even stronger influence from Polynesia. It could be from colonization, intermarriage, greater food or culture exchanges.

Please remember to review the RULES, especially concerning flag size. For an image in a single-flag entry, the shortest side must be 600 pixels or less, and the longest side must be 1200 pixels or less.

As of Friday I had a feeling this would be the case.
I'll go back to the drawing board and think of something else.
Will post soon.

Okay, let us try this one.

FLAG CHALLENGE #258: Three into One

Similar to the Union Jack of the United Kingdom, make a flag combining three nations into a personal union. The unions should be pre-20th century and should make some sort of logical sense (basically no random flag mashups like Kingdom of Bavaria, Brazil, and Qajar Iran). Elements from each union member should be readily apparent in the submitted flag. Examples of the originating flags can be linked in the descrptive text, but do not need to be submitted, just the flag you have created.

The Empire of Japan began its Colonial Conquests of Asia in the late 1890s. Following the First Sino-Japanese War, Japan's influence across Asia overshadowed that of China. It is at this point that Japanese Korean relations diverged from the OTL. More moderate influences within both nations' political classes viewed the new Japanese-Korean alliance as the perfect opportunity to embark on a great liberation of the western Pacific region. With an increasingly revolutionary-minded Philippines, the two nations decided to put this liberation policy to the test. Japan-Korea-backed forces of the Philippine revolutionary army routed Spanish forces from the islands. The United States briefly considered entering the fray at the behest of Spain but declined for fear of sparking a prolonged conflict that the American people had little appetite for.
The three nations signed a treaty in 1898 that established a unique accord between the three in which they established a common currency, military, and foreign relations branch but the nations themselves maintained sovereignty over their original lands and were allowed to establish their own laws. The flag that was unveiled at the signing combined the Rising Sun of Japan, the Eight-Rayed Sun of the Philippines, and the Korean Trigrams.
Unfortunately for the new union, in 1903, Japanese Empirical agents launched a coup d'etat through a massive assassination campaign against leaders of the three nations restoring the Japanese empire and plunging the Korean peninsula and Philippine Islands into decades-long conflicts with China, Russia, Australia, UK, France, and the USA.

The Celtic League

Celtic League.png

Formed out of the chaos of the War of the Angevin Succession, the Celtic League was a personal union of Wales, Cornwall and Brittany under the powerful House of Tudor. Long chafing under the English and French hegemony that formed the core of Angevin power, the collapse of the House of Plantagenet to infighting allowed the Tudors to carve out a kingdom for themselves from the Celtic territories that they had long controlled. Although Ireland also gained its independence in the conflict and collaborates with the Tudors to check English adventurism in the Irish and Celtic seas it is not formally a member of the League. The flag of the Celtic League combines the gold-on-black of the Welsh Cross of Saint David, the white-on-black of the Cornish Cross of Saint Piran and the Breton ermine and black-on-white Kroaz Du.

The United Kingdom

The present design of the Union Flag dates from a Royal proclamation following the union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. The flag combines aspects of three older national flags: the flag of England, known as St George's Cross, the flag of Scotland, known as St Andrew's Cross, and the blue cross of St Patrick to represent Ireland.
- The flag of England is derived from Saint George's Cross. In heraldry, Saint George's Cross is a red Cross pattée on a white background, which from the Late Middle Ages became associated with Saint George, the military saint, often depicted as a crusader.
- The flag of Scotland, also known as Saint Andrew's Cross, is a blue field with a white cross. Walter Bower in his Scotichronicon supplies a legend according to which Saint Andrew appears to king Óengus II in 832, on the eve of a battle against the Angles. The saint advises the king to watch for the "sign of the Cross of Christ appeared in the blue sky". The "Cross of Christ" in this legend is later turned into the Saint Andrew's Cross, in the account of George Buchanan (1506–1582). Early texts, such as the Acts of Andrew known to Gregory of Tours, describe Andrew as bound, not nailed, to a Latin cross of the kind on which Jesus is said to have been crucified.
- Saint Patrick's cross is a blue Celtic Cross on a white field. It is popularly believed that St. Patrick introduced the Celtic Cross in Ireland, during his conversion of the provincial kings from paganism to Christianity. St Patrick is said to have taken the symbol of the sun and extended one of the lengths to form a melding of the Christian Cross and the sun.

So, the same nations, the same saints, but alternative crosses. I hope this is technically still up to the challenge .

Asturias.png

The United Kingdom of Asturia is a semi federal parliamentary monarchy located in the northwestern 2/3 of the Spaniard Peninsula.
It cites its origins in the post-Roman Kingdom of Asturias which split into 3 then unified then split again in the 11th century CE as the kingdoms of Galicia, Leon, and Navarre. Galicia and Leon unified in the 16th century before coming under the Navarrese King Marco II Marquez de Gascon in the 17th.
Marco the Unifier promoted a closer Asturian commonality as opposed to the usual Spaniard one that usually had a linguistic component and thus excluded the Basques, ending with a legal and political union of the 3 until then mostly separate albeit allied nations.
The 18th century saw the country develop into a mostly parliamentary monarchy like most of Western Europe before falling to republicanism and the Salvadorists.
The end of the Salvador regime in the 1980s saw the restoration of both liberalism and the monarchy with the pushes towards regional autonomy and federalism assuaged somewhat by each Deputy able to group into regions and vote on region only laws.

The Flag
The flag in many ways is representative of Asturia's history. The early flags were mainly the banners of arms: Galicia a blue field with golden crosses and silver chalice, Leon a white field with golden crosses and red lion, Navarre a red field with the golden Gascon Cross (cross bottony & nowy). The union of Galicia & Leon quartered the arms, the shield of Navarre being added on before Marco instituted the party (tierced) per pall arms with Navarre above Galicia left and Leon right. Based on this he made the civil flag a red triangle hoist on a blue-white bicolour with golden crosses throughout but retained the gyronny of red blue white as the naval flag.
The United Salvadoran Republic(s) used the republican tricolour of red white blue with the USR seal.
Despite a push to return to the old monarchical flag the government of Simon III instead kept the tricolour and added a field of golden crosses bottony as a way to symbolise the country as more of a crowned republic than a possibly temporarily liberal monarchy.
Note: while each stripe is officially the same width, in practice the proportions used are slightly stretched to the fly due to optical effects.

I want to say that if I was voting in this Flag Challenge, I would have had a hard time deciding as I thought all four flags were great.

With that being said, the winner of Flag Challenge 258 is Sandpro

FLAG CHALLENGE #259: Forget Columbus

The year is 1425 and the first ship of Zeng He's massive expedition has made landfall in the OTL's Puget Sound, USA. The settlements that follow establish the Chinese as the "Discoverers of the Americas". The Confucian teachings instilled in these early explorers lead them to value cooperation with the native tribes as opposed to conquest. This cooperation leads to the rapid modernization of America's natives. Among these modern ideas were forging, mining and construction techniques, weaponry, military tactics, farming practices, and medical advancements (viral inoculation being key). Because of this massive divergence in timelines, the late 15th century European explorers encountered exponentially different native cultures across the Americas than those of the OTL.

The task is to create a flag from this NEW New World. It can be a nation, a tribe, a city-state, a kingdom, or... whatever from 1500-Present. Allow your imagination to run wild with the possibilities of two continents where none of the OTL boundaries or governments ever existed.

The Eagle Banner: The Haudenosaunee

Hiawatha.png

Here's a flag for an expansive Iroquois Confederacy that forms an increasingly close alliance with a second Viking attempt at a Vinland settlement to better fortify themselves against those they consider uncivilized savages to their south and west. The Eagle Banner is a war flag combining the bald eagle common to the region, the Norse Raven Banner and the tree and wampum belt of the Belt of Hiawatha. At their height the Haudenosaunee had ironfisted control of everything from the St. Lawrence seaway to the Great Lakes.
