TL-191: After the End

Thank you. This appears to be a fascinating extension of the TL-191 universe. I see Japan seems to have dropped off of the list of major nations . Do you anticipate a more in-depth account of the "Fourth Pacific War"? Or of the origins and development of space exploration?

The Fourth Pacific War took place from 1967 until 1970 in TTL. The prelude to the war is included in the 1960s sections. Most of the Fourth Pacific War is detailed in the 1967, 1968, and 1969 sections.

Space exploration, and the Space Chase in TTL, is detailed in the 1960s sections and in the post-Fourth Pacific War sections, especially in the 1970-1979 section.

I'm curious about the legacy of Abner Dowling. While he didn't play as critical role in the U.S. victory as Irving Morrell, he certainly had multiple contributions to the nation. At the end of the series he was considering writing his memoirs. How does the 21st century U.S. view Dowling?

This is the write-up that I did for Dowling:

Abner Dowling, after he retired, wrote a two volume memoir of his time in the US military during the two Great Wars. He died in 1955.

Dowling’s critical account in his memoirs of George Armstrong Custer would later serve as one of the sources for the epic Custer trilogy of biopics by Fred Niall later in the Twentieth Century, especially the last two films in the trilogy (Custer on the Barrel Roll and Emperor Custer).

So how's Venezuela in TTL by 2021 and what is it's history after the SGW?

Also what are the biggest cities in the world? Not the USA, the world.

Edit: This fic now has it's own TV Tropes page. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/Timeline191AfterTheEnd

Venezuela, during the first generation after the end of the Second Great War, benefited from its large oil reserves. The country also enjoyed one of the world’s highest rates of annual economic growth during the first postwar generation.

Venezuela was among the countries in South America that signed a post-SGW military alliance with the Empire of Brazil, with the exceptions of Chile and Ecuador, which both joined the CDS. Venezuela was also a member state, along with Brazil’s other military allies, of the Independence Movement. Later in the 20th Century, Venezuela joined the Brazil/US-led Council of the Western Hemisphere.

Venezuela in TTL never went under military rule. However, the country was not without economic problems. During the late 20th Century, Venezuela was among the petroleum-exporting states that were negatively affected by a collapse in the international price of oil. Since the 1980s, various governments in Venezuela have attempted to diversify the country’s economy, to mixed success. By 2021, Venezuela was among the countries in the Western Hemisphere worst affected by the Great Housing Crash.

Venezuela’s diplomatic relations with the United States after the end of the SGW have not been without tensions. The postwar governments in Venezuela were not pleased at the USA extending its rule throughout the Caribbean all the way to Trinidad. The political and military leadership of Venezuela did not forget how the USA had supported Colombia during the interwar border disputes between Bogota and Caracas. Although Venezuela would join the Council of the Western Hemisphere, the Venezuelan government was less than pleased at the headquarters for the CWH being located in Bogota.

By 2021, there has not been a diplomatic rupture between Venezuela and the USA. However, the two countries cannot be considered allies.

My thanks to whoever created the TV Tropes page for this TL. I am glad that this TL warrants a mention on that website.

How's Serbia doing after the long occupation? (Or rather were they annexed as the maps suggest or a Austro-Hungarian puppet state?) Did they become a republic or does it stay a monarchy? If so for the latter, who rules it? A member of the House of Obrenovich (whom were friendly to them), or another noble family? By the way, does the historiographical notion persist that Serbia "started the war" into the present day, or has it been challenged? The Serbs themselves would still balk at that notion. Did the CP apologize for any atrocities committed during the wars and occupation and give monetary compensation?

Does the analog horror genre still exist in this timeline?

By 2021, there’s no real counterpart in TTL to the analog horror genre.

This is what I wrote about the horror genre in TTL.

The horror genre is rather different in the US and Germany in 2021 compared to our world. In TTL’s 20th Century, nothing as iconic as Psycho was ever produced. Due to differences in the timing of changes to existing censorship systems, differences in audience tastes, and no real trends towards large scale franchises, there is no real equivalent in this world to series like OTL’s Friday the Thirteenth or Nightmare on Elm Street.

Horror movies in both the US and Germany tend to be closer to psychological thrillers than anything like OTL’s slasher movies. There is also a tendency, depending on the director or writer, to use horror as social commentary. Those US horror movies with a supernatural aspect tend to be centered around hauntings or ghosts; in these kinds of movies, there’s usually a revenge element to them.

In 2021, the newest wave of horror fiction in the US is emerging on the New York theater scene, stemming from the surprise smash success of the 2018 John Lastra Broadway play Insect. This form of horror, as vividly portrayed in Lastra’s play, focuses on the total psychological destruction of the protagonist due to utterly insane circumstances.

For this reply, I’m including the caveat that the following information on the history of Serbia in TTL is not necessarily what occurred in the TL-191 series, but is the case in TTL.

By 2021, the ruling dynasty of the Kingdom of Serbia is the House of Obrenović. In TTL, there were more members of the Obrenović family who survived the coup which overthrew the dynasty at the beginning of the 20th Century. After the end of the First Great War, the Obrenović family was restored to power in Serbia by the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the German Empire, while the Karađorđević family was forced into exile: first to Switzerland, and later to the Russian Empire, after the end of the First Russian Civil War.

The Obrenović family, after being removed from power and surviving in exile as guests of Emperor Franz Josef in Vienna, was staunchly supportive of the Central Powers, and of Austria-Hungary in particular. This support by the restored dynasty for Berlin and Vienna was not shared by the Serbian people, who had suffered during the war and military occupation by the Central Powers. After the end of the FGW, Serbia lost territory to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Bulgaria, and was forced in the final peace treaty with the Central Powers to accept an indemnity to the victorious powers, and a “war guilt” clause. The Serbian military, especially the officer corps, was also opposed to the treaty, and became a hotbed of opposition to the ruling House of Obrenović.

At the beginning of the Second Great War, the Obrenović family was forced to flee Serbia in the face of a military coup and popular uprising covertly supported by France, Great Britain, and Russia. Following this successful uprising, the new military government of Serbia declared war against Austria-Hungary and Germany, while inviting the Karađorđević family to return to power. The new rulers of Serbia, beyond driving out the Obrenović family, also sought to bring the Serbian population of Austria-Hungary into the Kingdom of Serbia, as well as to transform Serbia into ruling great power of the Balkans.

During the SGW, the Central Powers gradually gained the upper hand against Serbia, with the Balkan Front primarily a theater of operations for the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Plans by the Serbian government to resist an expected Central Powers invasion never came to pass, after the defeat of the Entente in 1944. Serbia, now facing the prospect of continuing a losing war against an allied bloc armed with superbombs, surrendered in 1944, and was subject to an Austro-Hungarian military occupation that lasted until 1961. The House of Obrenović was once again restored to power, while the House of Karađorđević again fled into exile in the Russian Empire. Most of Serbia’s military leadership also fled into Russian exile in 1944.

After the end of the SGW, Serbia again lost territory to the Austro-Hungarians and Bulgarians. The Kingdom of Serbia was also effectively transformed into a satellite kingdom of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with the Obrenović family seeking marriages into the Habsburg dynasty. By 2021, Serbia is still considered, in both Belgrade and Vienna, as a “Kingdom in Free Association” with Austria-Hungary.

The Serbian population was generally opposed to these postwar development, but was also exhausted by the war, and faced with economic hardships following the end of the conflict. As with France and the United Kingdom, Serbia experienced high levels of emigration during the first postwar generation. Unlike the country’s royal and military emigres, most Serbian emigres after the end of the SGW left for the United States. By 2021, there are large Serbian-American communities in the USA, particularly in Chicago and New York City.

By 2021, there have been no apologies from the Central Powers for the conduct of their soldiers in either of the Great Wars.

Thank. Based on this, does the notion still persist that Serbia "started the war"? I'm leaning that it does based on the 'war guilt' clause.

Question on TTL's Dissolution of the Ottoman Empire: Why didn't the Golden Wolves and Sultan Abdul Hamid III ultimately didn't get along? With the result being the former overthrowing the latter. It's evident they both had genocidal and dictatorial ambitions and shared a lot in common when it came to that.

By 2021, the popular view in Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the USA tends to hold the Entente as a whole responsible for starting the First Great War, although in the USA most of the popular and historical focus of the origins of that conflict still tends to focus on the CSA.

By the end of the 2000s, Rifat Macar, the leader of the Golden Wolves, blamed Abdul Hamid III for the major military setbacks experienced by the group throughout the Middle East. Macar also had ambitions of his own to seize supreme power for himself.

On the topic of genocide, what's Raphael Lemkin (the person who coined the term) doing ITTL?

The analogue in TTL to Raphael Lemkin, born on a slightly different date in comparison to our world, lived in the Kingdom of Poland, although he also studied law in the German Empire in the 1920s. Lemkin, in TTL, was not the legal thinker who coined the term genocide.

By 2021, most of the extended Lemkin family still lives in the Kingdom of Poland and the German Empire, although several members of the family emigrated to the Commonwealth of Zion.
