TL-191: After the End

Is there an analogue to the UEFA Champions League ITTL?

There is an analogue to the UEFA Champions League in TTL: the European Football Union. It was created after the end of the Second Great War, initially as a “modern” exclusive club for the leading Austro-Hungarian and German teams. However, the organization became more inclusive during the late 20th Century. In 2021, every European Community member state has at least one team represented in the European Football Union. The headquarters of the organization are in Vienna.

In the FIFA equivalent of TTL does Britain play as a single team or does each home nation (Scotland, Whales, England) get an individual team as in OTL. More to the point does Austria-Hungary play as one team or multiple teams. This can either be two - one for Austria (Cisleithania) and one for Hungary (Transleithania) - or multiple teams for other nations.

So the CSA has disappeared with the USAs effective absorption of the former Confederate States and destruction of all Confederate government buildings save those used in the Destruction. But what about the memory and the evidence of the Confederacy everywhere else in the world especially in the rest of the USA and Canada and in former allies like Mexico,Britain ,France,Russia and even former enemies like Germany ? To say nothing of the fact that pretty much every Southerner born prior to 1940 remembers their formative years and the better part of their lives as Confederates-this applies to most Southerners probably at least until the 1990s. How does the USA deal with aspects of the Confederacy it hasnt been able to remove including written records, artifacts. sound and video footage and perhaps most important of all memories ?

The first question may be better answered in one of the other TL-191 threads.

In TTL, relations between the US military authorities and the various First Nations groups in Occupied Canada might be best described as neutral. As long as members of different indigenous groups did not engage in anti-US activities, the US authorities generally stayed out of local indigenous affairs.

I'm surprised the US didn't take the opportunity to recruit the First Nations as collaborators, promising them greater liberties in exchange for assisting in the occupation forces like the Quebecois did during the SGW.

In the case of the United Kingdom, there are teams for England, Wales, and Scotland as in our world.

In the case of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the situation is rather more complicated. Prior to the establishment of the European Football Union, there was a long-running debate in the empire’s sporting world if resources were to be dedicated to establishing a single imperial football team for the empire. By the time the European Football Union was established, there were a multitude of teams in the empire supported by various regions.

The establishment of the European Football Union was the catalyst for a reform of the empire’s national football arrangement. Teams from different regions of the empire, by special allowance of the European Football Union, would play against each other in what became popularly known as the Danubian League, for the Imperial Cup. Whichever regional team won the Imperial Cup would then represent the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the contest for the European Cup.

There are museums throughout the United States in 2021 that include artifacts from the former CSA.

The USA in TTL is not a totalitarian dictatorship. The US authorities never had the intention of trying to remove every existing personal memory of the CSA from the population of the Midsouth. The focus instead was on changing minds through advocacy, as in the case of the Equality pamphlet, and on changing the local public education system to fit the long term goal of political reunion.

This is still criticized by some US military historians in 2021, although, as other historians have argued in TTL, the US military took a long time to develop a successful policy in occupied regions of divide-and-rule.

My guess is because his actions played a direct role in the end of Canada and in the long run the CSA. Memories are long and would last well into the 20th and maybe 21st centuries...

Yes, this is more less the case, although feelings in the Canadian states and the Midsouth regarding Theodore Roosevelt, while not necessarily positive, are also not a significant force in local society and politics in these regions.

Which character from the books lived the longest? Are any side characters alive in TTL 2021?

Several characters from the series enjoyed long life spans in TTL. For example, Flora Blackford, Joshua Blackford and Cassius Madison all lived to be well over 90.

By the end of the 2020s in TTL, there are no characters from the series left.

I will divide my reply into several parts. My apologies, I know that some of these names were on the previous list.

Lieutenant Boris Lovochkin’s reputation for brutality and cruelty followed him around the former CSA in the immediate years after the end of the Second Great War. Lovochkin was involved in numerous altercations and incidents involving civilians, as he was repeatedly transferred throughout occupied South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Finally, in 1951, after one fatal shooting incident too many in Apopka, Florida, Lovochkin, who barely avoided a prison sentence from said incident, was stripped of his officer’s rank, demoted, and transferred to Grenada. Chafing under his commanding officer, as well having to serve in a quiet occupation zone where the population did not hate the US, Lovochkin committed suicide in 1954, while still on occupation duty in Grenada.

Samuel Longstreet, like much of the former Whig establishment of the 1934 CSA, thought that the Featherston administration would be an aberration from the established order. This proved to be a grossly mistaken assumption. Longstreet, as well as his former running mate, Hugo Black, were both arrested on direct orders from the Grey House in 1937, after Featherston ordered the assassination of another political enemy, Governor Huey Long of Louisiana. Both Longstreet and Black were imprisoned in a forced labor camp in Mississippi, under false charges of engaging in espionage on behalf of the USA.

Neither Longstreet or Black survived the Featherston regime. Postwar historians managed to confirm that both men died in 1941, though under unclear circumstances.

John Nance Garner’s political career in Texas as a Whig came to an end with the beginning of the Featherston regime. The state Whig Party, already weakened by years of brutal street violence in the state between feuding paramilitary groups, as well as years of electoral losses to both the Freedom Party and the Tin Hats, was all but destroyed under the combined onslaught of both Featherston and Willy Knight. Garner, with a long record of publicly denouncing Featherston and Knight alike, was arrested on spurious charges of treason and subversion in 1935. After spending four years behind bars in Texas, Garner, following the removal of Willy Knight from the Featherston regime, was transferred, along with numerous other local ex-Whig politicians, to a forced labor camp in Louisiana. Like Samuel Longstreet and Hugo Black, Garner did not survive the Featherston regime. Garner’s fate was not confirmed until 1954, when Lyndon Johnson, during the early years of his private research into what had happened in Texas during Featherston regime, uncovered documentary evidence that Garner, along with numerous other former Texas Whigs imprisoned in the Louisiana forced labor prison system, had been murdered in 1942 at the direct request of the Freedom Party’s boss in Texas.
