Victoria 3!!!

But isn’t that like money or resources in every game that includes those?
Its the abstraction thats the problem I feel. Its one thing to be unable to raise a fort because the budget is in tatters, its another that my budget is strong but I don't have fifty military points.

If you boil it down sure, money is essentially Coin Mana. I'm casting from my coin mana to build a temple in eu3, but I'm only casting from money so it makes sense that my military budget dries up when im focusing on civil works. Casting from two at the same time means the lesser of the two is the real resource and the other is just a limiter.

I'm estimating the probability of an Extended Timeline mod being producted for Vicky 3 to be at least 100000000000%.
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They also mentioned they didn't rule out an earlier bookmark later on, maybe as a DLC.
I hope not because Victoria II only had one bookmark ~ with the different bookmarks in other Paradox games I liked watching the changes in the map over the decades.

I hope they portray events like the Carlist Wars, Maaaa~eiji Restoration [a goat's absolute favourite restoration!] or the Belgian Revolution in a better way than in Viky II.

A thought occurred to me, a bit of what we’ve seen and read of Vicky 3 sounds a LOT like Imperator. Has Paradox mentioned if they’re using the same engine?

All PDX games since Imperator use the Jomini engine. So far that's only Imperator, CK3, and now Victoria 3.

Is the engine multithreaded? Is it 64-bit? If not, these things are DOA. It’s not 2010 anymore. Vicky 2 lag is only acceptable within the context of the computing era in which it was made. I know that Bethesda has limped along on a 15 year old engine, but that’s mostly because they’re being carried around by their modding community.

Not sure about multithreaded, but it is 64-bit.

Personally, I can't wait to finally get into Victoria. I've played pretty well every other major Paradox game, but never got into Victoria, likely because of its age. This seems like an opportunity to jump in, and I'm hoping it's good.

Why do people hate mana so much? Like, as a concept.

This is a late reply, but essentially the reason we are also so adverse to mana is that it is the very antithesis of what made Victoria II great.

Yes, Victoria II and Victoria 3 will have abstract resources, that is just in the nature of GSGs. The difference, however, is that all of Victoria II's abstract values were not arbitrary, meaningless values doled out in a vacuum. Every single value on your screen is interrelated with each other, your infamy affecting your war exhaustion affecting your population's militancy influencing your economy and so on and so forth. EU4 is fun and (before Leviathan) a great game, however it is merely a paper representation of history, a very nation-centric version of history where population dynamics, popular sentiment and economic history is secondary to the actions of great nation-states and kings, or more accurately abstract numbers which represent concrete things but cannot be quantified.

Victoria is different. Yes, the player has agency as the government and can shape their nation to their heart's content. But unlike any other paradox game, save perhaps Stellaris and Imperator (whose systems were inspired by Victoria, anyhow,) the nation is not merely a singular entity, but the product of it's many diverse peoples. Paradox themselves have said it: Victoria is a simulation. The reason why you can't recruit a new battalion of solders in Victoria is not because you haven't waited long enough for the magic military points, but because all of your solider POPs are literally dead because of your endless wars. Or perhaps your soldiers left their jobs because you set their wages to zero when you ran out of money a decade ago and forgot to set it back. Or perhaps it's because your soldiers have all decided to mutiny and bring about the glorious Socialist Revolution. Almost everything in Victoria derives from concrete cause and effect, often reflections of your economy or population, not merely at the whims of strange numbers.

Victoria isn't perfect, and a lot of it's aspects are baffling. But it's simulation aspect is what I find the most special about it. Seldom does a game attempt to simulate every miner, businessman, clerk or farmer in a country, modelling their needs fulfilled using a dynamic market system. And this is why I think Victoria 3 has been held back for so long (apart from it's predecessor's low player base.) It's a daunting task to create such a complex simulation, and even moreso to get it to work.

Nevertheless, I trust Wiz, as he headed Stellaris' pseudo-Victoria economy revamp, as well as being a massive fan of Victoria II (Wiz, Groogy, and Podcat patched Victoria II in their free time some years ago.) And their economic system, at least from description, contrary to fears of being "dumbed down", seem even deeper and more realistic then Victoria II's (I particularly love the idea of a new dynamic wage system and local price indexes).

Nevertheless, remember: DON'T PREORDER! Wait for reviews.

I honestly can't wait to play as the Sikh Empire in Victoria III. Though because its paradox I'm not gonna pre-order, but I'm going to wait a while until all the bugs and kinks are worked out.

Interesting theory: this might actually lead to HOI4 modding taking a hit- TNO was planned by Panzer to be a Vicky II mod to begin with, after all, and if there's better mod support (which is almost a given, Paradox is clearly aware that modding keeps them raking in cash) it's rather likely that the more ambitious projects without the prior framework (unlikely that TNO is going to move over now, given that they've basically added a version of the economy into the game) will attempt to fuck with the more complex franchise that has up-to-date mod support.

Yeah this game is probably going to be super modabble, speaking of which, I hope someone does a "Separated at Birth: America and Drakia" mod, the timeline deserves something like that
