Senator Charlie Forrester "ready to declare" Presidential bid

Georgia Senator Charlie Forrester is understood to be "ready to declare" his entry into the Republican presidential battle in the next few days, NBS sources say. Forrester , 67, who served in the Lassister administration also served two terms in the House in the 1990's as well as two terms as Governor had not been regarded as a likely contender but it seems that he believes that he could have a real shot at the nomination.

Forrester now in his second term in the Senate, is not up for re-election until 2024, and feels that if he doesn't run this time, he will have missed any chance of running for the presidency again. He is know for his unconventional style "Have a Beer with Charlie" have been a focus of all his campaign's, when he turns up at bars and has drinks with voters, he also famously back during his first run for Governor in 1998, (which he lost in a squeaker) when struck by an egg by a heckler at a rally, he attempted to wade into the crowd and get at his attacker. He was regarded as a highly successful Governor thanks most notably because of the sale of surplus vehicles and real estate owned by the state, and in 2009 he rejected stimulus funds from the Santos administration because he would have to raise taxes. He was vetted for Glen Walken's running-mate in 2010, although he didn't make it through to the final three, he was regarded as a serious contender for the job.

He is also the Uncle (by marriage) to his fellow Georgia Senator Max Lobell III, having married Senator Max Lobell's daughter, Rachel. If he does get into the race, then it will likely get a lot more interesting and entertaining.

Powerful representative to resign after congressional staff indicted in financial probe

Congressman Rep Omundson (R-TX), who took over as chairman of the House Financial Services Committee in January, has announced he will submit his resignation to the Speaker of the House after two of his congressional staff were indicted by a Texas grand jury for campaign finance violations and wire fraud. Omundson, who represents Texas' 5th congressional district, announced in a written statement that an "unfair cloud of suspicion" would render him "unable to fairly represent [his] constituents" and oversee the powerful Financial Services committee.

The dean of Texas' congressional delegation, Omundson has been in Congress since 1987 and has deep ties to the oil industry in Texas and financial firms on Wall Street. In the last three sessions of Congress, according to FEC filings, only party leaders in the House raised more money than the long-time congressman from the Dallas area.

According to court filings, FBI investigators discovered a pattern of unusual financial transactions between the two individuals and Maryland-based lobbyist J.D. Prudhomme, who was indicted last week for fraud and embezzlement. FBI agents filed statements showing that Prudhomme deposited regular payments of $9,900 (just below the $10,000 amount that is automatically reported to the IRS) to separate accounts in the names of the two members of Omundson's staff. Federal prosecutors say that the deposits were "clearly made to evade detection" and "unduly influence official conduct...to favor clients of [Prudhomme]."

No indictments have yet been submitted for Omundson, although federal prosecutors said in a statement that they are "actively investigating" whether government resources (such as offices or House emails), were used to facilitate the transfer of funds or if Omundson received indirect financial benefit from Prudhomme.

Omundson's resignation from the House will take effect on Monday, April 12th at noon. Speaker Mitchell Harris (R-IN)'s office has stated that the party will choose a permanent successor to the role of chair of the Financial Services committee later this month; vice chair Johnston Meek (R-CA) will chair committee meetings after they resume next week until then.

Prince Philip has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace announces

Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

A statement issued by the palace just after midday spoke of the Queen's "deep sorrow" following his death at Windsor Castle on Friday morning. The Duke of Edinburgh, the longest-serving royal consort in British history, was at the Queen's side for more than her six decades of reign.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband," the palace said. "The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Speaking at Downing Street, the Prime-Minister Richard Samuels said that the duke had "earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world". Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Gerald Lucy, said he "consistently put the interests of others ahead of his own and, in so doing, provided an outstanding example of Christian service".

President of the United States, Sam Seaborn said "On behalf of all the people of the United States, we send our deepest condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the entire royal family, and all the people of the United Kingdom on the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh". Former President Glen Walken paid tribute to the dukes long life and WW2 service " Over the course of his 99-year life, he saw our world change dramatically and repeatedly. From his service during World War 2, to his 73 years alongside the Queen, and his entire life in the public eye, Prince Philip gladly dedicated himself to the people of the UK, the Commonwealth, and to his family".

The flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-mast and a notice was posted on the gates following the announcement of the duke's death. People placed floral tributes outside the palace, while hundreds visited Windsor Castle to pay their respects. In further tribute to the duke, Westminster Abbey will toll its tenor bell once every 60 seconds, 99 times, from 18:00 BST on Friday evening.

Buckingham Palace will confirm the detailed arrangements for the funeral on the Royal website, it added. All UK government buildings have been told to fly an official flags at half-mast in tribute to the duke until 08:00 BST on the day after the funeral.

OOC Interestingly in this thread HM The Queen is depicted by Helen Mirren (from The Queen) which starred James Cromwell as the Duke of Edinburgh.

Obviously James Cromwell appears as someone else here.

Some people think President DW Newman and the Duke of Edinburgh looked similar, personally I don't see it myself. ;)
