Photos from World War Z

I imagine getting in close when the virus spreads through bodily fluids is a recipe for infection. Max Brooks says it can still be infectious 48hrs after the destruction of it’s host, which is one reason why the dead have to be burned. He actually says dead zeds should be treated as ‘highly toxic, highly lethal’ material. You’d have to fight with goggles/masks on, and burn or otherwise disinfect the clothes you’d fought in.

Obviously there are cases where people are forced into close combat in the books, but as a deliberate strategy it’s probably not great.
Well, yeah, but Book!WWZ zombies are not super fast (a la Movie!WWZ) nor do they ejaculate bodily fluids on you [1] (a la 28 Days Later), so theoretically slashing/bashing-and-dashing would be quite feasible for poorer countries or isolated communities that don't have fancy(ish) zombie fighting stiff like the Lobo or SIR. You'd still need some kind of face cover, but that should be easy to make.

Killing them in close combat probably requires getting bodily fluids on you? You are, after all, literally breaking them open.

Finnish CBRN-specialist in Helsinki Airport, following the 2009 Air China flight incident, the incident (16 infected passengers and 48 people quarantined) marked the arrival for the first time of the virus on Finnish soil, the information classified by the Ministry of Defense in order to avoid a major panic was only made public two years ago with the reconstruction work of the Helsinki colony (Finnish and European mandate), the report appended to the conclusions of the investigation carried out in the time attests to the high level of infectivity of the virus and recommends putting in place military and political responses for the development of the pandemic, these conclusions were not followed at the time.

A group of civilians in the La Jolla, California in the West Coast Safe Zone. Judging by their backpacks, it appears they have hiked a long way. Only one of them appears to be armed. It is unknown of they were part of a larger group.

A pair of $1 bills seen in a drain in a street in New York City during the Great Panic. Crudely taken by a smartphone, this has been designated as one of the most impactful photographs taken during World War Z as it shows that money had became worthless by the time zombies were known to the general public. The photographer of this iconic image may never be known.

"Take Your Picture With A Zombie"
One of the strange ways of entertainment in survivor communities with captured zombies. This practice has been outlawed with survivors being arrested by authorities and their "pets" terminated on the spot due to the obvious threat this posses should a slip up occurred. Nonetheless, posts on restored social media still comes up from time-to-time. Authorities have encouraged citizens to report such occurrences immediately.

A photograph of the WWI era Armored Cruiser Georgios Averof at Palaio Faliro, circa 2011. During WWZ, both ships would be commandeered by the Greek Navy to transport civilians and military personnel from mainland Greece to either the Peloponnese or Crete safe zones. Later on, they would both be used to pound areas where large congregations of Zeks were located during the Reclamation Campaigns in Greece and the Balkans.

Striking picture of a CDC worker taken hostage by residents of a quarantined apartment block in the early stages of the Great Panic.

The first response of the government upon learning of a suspected outbreak was to completely lockdown affected areas to prevent uncontrolled spread. In practice this meant temporarily locking uninflected individuals in with ghouls.

Armed CDC officials were sent in to assess the threat but they often found that residents were as hostile as the dead. In this case exposed civilians tried to negotiate an exit by threatening a captured CDC officer.

Volunteer militia, equipped with low grade hazmat gear, arrest a women suspected of exposure in Bellwood Nebraska.

As official law and order collapsed during the Great Panic many small towns took it upon themselves to keep the infection out. With millions of refugees fleeing across the nation, this desire generally took the form of hostility to outsiders and those the community already didn’t trust.

Unfortunately there are all too many stories of new found authority being abused. Old grudges and prejudices were resolved in the new climate of terror through vigilante justice.

For all their vigilance, Bellwood was eventually overwhelmed by one tendril of a million-strong horde heading west from Chicago.
