The green, red, and white tricolor was the flag used by British Republican groups in the early 1800's. At least starting in 1816.
Do you have a source that isn't Clive Bloom's book? That's only I can find that claims that tricolour dates that early.
Edit: Looking on FOTW the discussion can't confirm it is from that time either.

“The Five Good Presidents” is a historiographical concept dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s, based around Machiavelli’s conception of “The Five Good Emperors” of Rome. The Presidents were credited with reaffirming American Democracy with the strengthening of the Union, reform to Civil Service, protection of rights for African Americans, and the adoption of sound money.

One, Lafayette Foster, was technically only ever Acting President but is included for his able opening to Reconstruction and steady hand in the wake of Lincoln and Johnson’s assassination.

There are, of course dissidents to the prevailing notion. All 5 continued the Indian Removal Polices of the U.S Army. All 5 suspended the rights of habeus corpus at some point in the Presidency. Black historians note the majority of Wheeler’s term was spent rolling back Reconstruction, only at the last minute did he switch course to avoid being “another Buchanan.” Even Garfield was not particularly interested in black civil rights outside of states where they could deliver a Republican majority. The pursuit of the Gold Standard by the final 3 (Lincoln had introduced the Greenbacks in the first place) is also seen as something of a mistake. Grant was also not particularly open to Civil Service Reform, although by the end of his third term he had moved in the that direction.

The 5 Good Presidents era roughly corresponded with the 3rd Party System, marked by Republican Dominance over their Democratic and later Liberal Democratic rivals. The coalition would end with the chaotic 3 way election of Adlai Stevenson of the Liberal Democratic Party, and the rise of the tri-party system that would characterize the county until the end of the Century.

Out of curiosity, do you have any sources on Foster? I've looked online and there seems to be an absolute dearth of information on him, especially in regards to personality and policies.

The 1940 Presidential Election in a timeline I have planned. I was going to post the other wikiboxes I made for this TL, but they are now outdated, so... yeah. Anyhow, here it is:

Nigel Marven was a British wildlife TV presenter, naturalist and conservationist best known for his work with dinosaurs. Marven was the presenter of the BBC series Chased by Dinosaurs. The two series, which saw Marven travel back in time to the Mesozoic era, were widely popular and helped Marven launch the similar series Sea Monsters. The much more risk-intense series, which nearly saw him killed on a few occassions, ultimatley paved the way for what many consider his main achievement in the form of Prehistoric Park, which saw him bring extinct creatures back to the present day. Marven's career was tragically cut short, however, in 2009, when while participating in an investigation of the Anomaly Research Center, Marven was attacked and devoured by a Giganotosaurus. Some have suggested Marven's death was the result of efforts by Masrani Global to stymie the development of Prehistoric Park and take out a potential rival to it before it could open publically. However, these remain mere rumors.

So I wasn't the only person in the world to remember this TV show?

I had a burst of creativity and some spare time, so I came up with this:

The 2076 Union of Stars and Asteroids presidential election was the first election held since the signing of the Venus Understanding of 2070 which brought and end to the Quasi-Interstellar War and streamlined the manufacturing industries on Mars. Held on the 70th of Orkbin (former month of September), the general election data took less than a second to fully process together thanks to the Virtual Operations Technical Enfranchiser, or V.O.T.E supercomputer that handled the election smoothly, able to process, count and sort the near two billion votes via the holo-net. Although there was increased worry about cyber attacks on V.O.T.E, the manufacturers and operators of the Artificial Intelligence, Elizabeth Industries had assured Congress the system was the best until the next seventy years. Incumbent President Ezra Flavius Zeno Gunther-Sho was constitutionally barred from running for another seventy year term, as per the details of the Virtual Constitution, digitally signed on Washington (previously known as the month of February) 22, 2032.

The old Know-Nothing Party immediately voted to disband itself, it's surviving members reorganizing under the banner of the National Salvation Front. As Union law requires a mandatory electoral alliance with some other party in order for ballot access, the NSF allied themselves with the recently spouting Gavil-63 Movement (former month of July). While those members that had fought for a corporatist government flocked to the NSF, millions of younger voters (thanks to voting rights being extended to birth) rejected the seemingly "out of touch" nature of the conservative NSF.

On the left-side of the political spectrum, sat a slew of far-left leaning parties, ranging from old versions of the communist party to vaguely left-leaning groups such as the Students for A Peaceful Coexistence . While these parties bickered, it would be Joseph Steele which would whip the left-leaning big tents into the Harmony party. When approached by the newly formed Neofederalists, they eagerly agreed to get onboard with their messaging, leaving it to Larry Bricker Burr to effectively manage the campaign of their candidate, David-Justinian Hans-Romanov.

A collection of mostly disgruntled voters gathered around a slew of online chatrooms and learning centers to vent their frustrations with the two party system, arguing that a third choice besides the usual left and right had to be an option. The bombastic and fiery Admin of the Board of Corrections and Social Credit Amir Caligula Junker-Pasha gave a rousing speech complete with memes and large amounts of simplistic videos explaining the platform of the party in colorful illustrations without many words. He called together a meeting for the Transnational Union, joining the enthusiastic calls of several southern states, even earning the endorsement of the USSA's Navy and Secret Police.

All three sides unleashed their large armies onto the general world, with little being done in the way of physical campaigning, instead hollering any poor sod on the holo-net with at least several hundred spams and pop-ups, advertisements that, Elizabeth Industries controversially did nothing about, in spite of their promise to "tighten regulations regarding holo-net campaigning". The campaigns were hit with numerous damaging cyberattacks, most blamed on outside powers that sought to damage the integrity of the Union's elections. However, internal reporting by a few thousand investigative journalists noted that most of the attacks came domestically, with a large alarm being raised on issues at home. The general campaign saw rare campaign stops, with most visits having a politician stop by websites to ask for their endorsement, with Peruser.com being the most badgered website, with at least a billion stops by campaign surrogates.

The general issues of the election were updated from the last one 70 years ago. References to a "European Union" were replaced with the "Roman Federation", any mention of "China" was scrubbed, with the candidates decrying the "efforts of the Eurasian Confederacy" instead. Much more focus was put on the interstellar colonial fighting of the still active British Space Empire, and attention turned towards the ongoing "Scramble for the Solar System". Concerns about "Climate Change" were sacked with environmental worries about "Solar Implosion", directing millions of denarii to attempt to migrate either the population or to worry about the effects of a possible implosion.
As the general election period took less than a few moments thanks to V.OT.E, the results were in within five full minutes. Jericho-Romanus Victo Hapsburg of the National Salvation Front defeated both David-Justinan Hans-Romanov of the Harmony Party and Amir Caligula Junker-Pasha of the Transnational Union.

As of 2500, this remains the last presidential election in which the winning candidate garnered less than 1 trillion votes, and the last general election held within the confines of the Continental USA, though at least 250 billion votes are recorded from orbital stations, lunar and planetary bases.

It is also the last Presidential election in which a candidate represented terra-infima, with all resulting candidates being represented either on colonies of the Union or onboard one of the warships/satellites in orbit above the nation.

It also remains the last election in which New Imperial York went to a right-leaning political party, having since switched back to voting for left-leaning platforms.

This is only the second election in which the state of Mii went to a right-leaning party, Mii would not vote for the right-leaning party until the 2496 presidential election.

My entry for the new wikibox contest:
The Center Cannot Hold!
(Or: The Russian establishment's last stand)

The May, 1930 Russian Legislative Elections were held on May 1, 1930, for the Russian State Duma. Chairman Vladimir D. Nabokov had signaled his intent to stand down following his government's slow response to the 1929 stock market crash and the difficult, uneven recovery. The Russian Progressive Party lost its ability to form a ruling coalition with the National Democrats and Communists, with Finance Minister and newly-elected party leader Aleksandr Konovalov presiding over the RPP's worst result in its existence, with the party losing over a hundred seats in the Duma and becoming the third-largest party. Mikhail Rodzianko and the Conservatives also lost seats, though not nearly as many as the RPP. Boris Savinkov brought his previously-fringe party to a massive victory, winning over fifty seats, many from traditionally Conservative precincts, while Dmitri Romanov, a former Grand Duke, led the Monarchists to more than double its seats.
Sergey Kirov led the Communists, long a fringe group in Russian politics, to their best result, winning a plurality of seats. Emboldened by his electoral success, Kirov refused to enter into a coalition with the RPP, unless Kirov became Chairman. Unwilling to hand the keys of government to the Communists, Konovalov refused and instead proposed a grand coalition, in the style of Cavour's transformismo, to combine the center-left and center-right against extremist parties. Savinkov agreed almost immediately, bringing his left-nationalist National Democrats into the grand coalition, while negotiations dragged on with Rodzianko. With the largest party in this prospective coalition, Rodzianko wanted to become Chairman, while both Konovalov and Savinkov were loathe to allow the conservative Rodzianko to become Chairman. Instead, the three parties agreed upon Alexander Trepov as a compromise Chairman, with Konovalov and Savinkov to become Deputy Chairmen, and the cabinet to be filled by men from all three parties. The coalition was agreed to on May 3rd, and a weary nation looked towards an uncertain future...

The Trepov Chairmanship lasted from May 3 to September 5, and was the product of two days of negotiations between the Russian Progressive Party, the Conservative Union, and the National Democrats. After several days of frantic negotiations to prevent new elections, which would almost certainly yield a Communist majority, the three parties agreed to a coalition agreement. Alexander Trepov, a moderate Conservative, was made Chairman, with Konovalov and Savinkov as Deputies.
Almost immediately, the Grand Coalition ran into trouble, as right-Conservative MDs and left-Progressive MDs opposed a budget plan that had been carefully negotiated to placate both party's centers and leadership. Without the support of either, the May budget failed in the Duma, forcing the drafting of a new one. The second budget attempt met a similar fate, forcing a government shutdown at the beginning of June. It was only with the agreement of several left-Progressives that a third compromise budget was passed on June 12th, ending a shutdown of almost 2 weeks.
Still, problems abounded for the coalition. Konovalov and Savinkov both proposed massive public works projects to combat the worsening depression, which Rodzianko and the hard Conservatives refused to consider, and which Trepov wanted to water down. On August 7th, a public works bill, funding the construction of several railroads connecting European Russia with Siberia, was withdrawn after many key Conservatives, including Interior Minister Nikolay Maklakov, refused to support it. Worse, Konovalov and Rodzianko began fighting over financial regulations, and farmer aid, with Rodzianko opposing anything stronger than bailouts for kulaks and large industrial corporations. After several weeks of negotiations over an economic aid bill, Rodzianko withdrew from the coalition, forcing Trepov to call a snap election. Sergey Kirov easily won the election, with a majority of 43 seats in the Duma. Despite the best efforts of Konovalov and Rodzianko, they had been unable to form a cohesive government, and so Russia was now in the hands of the Communists. It would be a long seventy years for Russia.

The Years of Lead

Act 2

As the great liberal hero bled out an operating table, Vice President Hayakawa was sworn in with a massive mandate for repression. A bloody battery of crackdowns gutted Communist support in working-class industrial districts and strangled nascent chapters in the new, integrated South. Humphrey's initiatives, like national healthcare, grand tracts of low-cost housing, a massive federal jobs program, free milk and lunches for school children, and nationalized industrial conglomerates were too popular to scrap. But the concentration camps for left-wing activists, scuttled by the bleeding-hearts and nattering northerners, those could skirt by once Humphrey had his lungs splattered across a stage by a Communist Party sniper. When Zagarell and Hall got the chair in Times Square, and then some sap-headed Reds retaliated by gunning down half the Nevada State Legislature, everyone knew what had to be done.

Following the Great Transportation Germany found itself with several pressing issues, but none for pressing then the remnants of the Third Reich along its borders. To the South lay the recently annexed (from the uptime perspective) Austria. To the East lay the areas beyond the Oder-Neisse line. And cut off from the rest was East Prussia. Merkel was insistent that Germany not impose on the uptime nations, but nonetheless was resolute that no Nazi rule be allowed to continue. Working with the now stranded American Army forces in Germany the German Army moved to occupy the regions. The Trans-Oder-Neisse area was disorganized, with many units surrendering upon receiving orders from Berlin. SS Leader in Austria Ernst Kaltenbrunner attempted a resistance to the people he viewed as staging a “coup” against Hitler. However he was soon overwhelmed. Upon learning he had been executed in the old timeline, Kaltenbrunner commited suicide in Vienna. Erich Koch, who had been the top Nazi in East Prussia for over a decade, and with the Polish government unwilling to allow the crossing of troops, he proved a tougher nut to crack. However, a series of specials forces operations and bombings allowed Amero-German to take control Konigsburg Harbor, and from there reinforcements took control of East Prussia, with Koch surrendering soon thereafter. By early January 1939 (New Timeline, or NZ after the German) the last of the Reich’s regular forces had surrendered.

Since then the “Eastern Occupation” has been focused on extensive de-Nazification at the populations. Provisional Governments were established in each of the territories, which are technically excluded from the Federal Republic of Germany, which allows for the deployment of the German Army to the regions. The Nazi Party has, of course, been banned, and the FRG has taken over control of local education and law enforcement. Major economic investment has been made into the occupied areas.

At a local political levels, Local Assemblies have been elected. Initially they are purely advisory, but Merkel’s government has unveiled a 5 year plan to phase in more powers to elected officials. Despite plans for Austrian independence a current majority is in favor of union with Germany. The National Conservative Party, an invention of uptime locals willing to dump the Nazis but unwilling to embrace downtime values, has emerged as the dominant force in Pomerania-Silesia and East Prussia.

A low level, but determined insurgency is ongoing by the self declared “Continuity SS.” Attacks have been levied at German and American troops and local groups accused of being “collaborators.” Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues were targeted, as were Muslim buildings in the Federal Republic Proper. In June 1939 (N.Z.) Army Inspector Kasdorf admitted that the Army believed neo-Nazis in the Federal Republic were aiding the Continuity SS, although violence has been on the downturn.

Germany’s military action has been supported by neighboring uptime countries, Poland has opened transit to German forces, while Germany has supported anti-Nazi efforts among German minorities in those countries. Germany has also worked to address nationalism in Polish majority areas of the occupied areas. A Commission has been established in an attempt to resolve possible plebiscites peacefully. Italy has been accused of supporting the Continuity SS in revenge for Germany “abandoning” their alliance. It remains to be seen how the Coup of St. Francis will impact this issue.
