1972 NIXON.png

After an upset victory in the 1972 Democratic primaries, Wallace narrowly secures the nomination, despite McGovern and Humphrey rallying behind Mondale as a compromise candidate. Mondale runs an independent campaign in opposition to Wallace, while Nixon shifts to the left to pick up northern Democrats angry by Wallace's nomination. Nixon's popularity, combined with vote-splitting and the fact that most people outside the south hate Wallace, means he wins a landslide victory.

Since this incident featured in the newly released Season 4 of The Crown, I figure I'd repost this.

Prince Charles nearly died on March 10, 1988, in an avalanche in Klosters, Switzerland.

What if he had been killed?

This is the first time a Prince of Wales has died since Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1751. It is the first time a reigning monarch has had an adult child predecease them since Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1900. Prince William wouldn't likely be given the title Prince of Wales until his grandmother believes he is ready. Diana becomes the Dowager Princess of Wales until William marries or if Diana re-marries.

Charle's death will rattle the U.K. and most of the Commonwealth and all attention will be on the extremely young 26-year-old widowed Diana. The funeral will be the largest seen in Europe since Churchill and nothing comparable until the death of Elizabeth II herself.

It is also worth noting that Fergie, The Duchess of York, was two months pregnant at the time.

Battlegrounds (also known as Half-Life: Battlegrounds) is an online first-person shooter multiplayer battle royale video game developed by Valve. It was initally developed and released as a Quake II modification by Brandon Greene in 1998, before Greene was hired and the game's intellectual property acquired. Battlegrounds was released by Valve for Microsoft Windows in 2000. It would be later ported to the Xbox, which would receive mixed reviews, and later to OS X and Linux, a Dreamcast port was planned before being cancelled due to the declining sales of the system. The game is the first installment in the Battlegrounds series. Several remakes and ports have been released on Xbox, as well as OS X and Linux.

In the game, up to fifty-eight players spawn randomly in a sizeable village (modeled after the ones seen in the Italian Riviera) and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in sections over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team alive wins the round.

Battlegrounds received acclaim for its gameplay and concept, it presented new types of gameplay that could be easily approached by players of any skill level and was highly replayable. It would later win over a dozen PC "Game of the Year" awards and would be the one of the best selling games of 2000. The game was attributed to popularazing and defining the battle royale genre.

Does this mean that Prince William will become the King of the United Kingdom following the eventually death of his grandmother Elizabeth II?

1976 reagan vs carter.png

Jimmy Carter was initially the favorite to win the election, having lead in one poll by 29 points. After all, multiple Republican politicians refused to publicly endorse his opponent, Ronald Reagan, and some even endorsed Carter.

But with the revelation that Carter had partook in an interview with Playboy, his polling numbers and favorability rating both dropped significantly. Carter's attempts to paint Reagan as a radical backfired after the latter's wife came out with a vicious rebuttal. Reagan also did quite well by himself in the debates, and campaigning as an unapologetic conservative populist aided him greatly with rural and union voters in the Midwest.

Reagan's overperformance was proven on Election Night.

As the Spring of Nations came to a close, the peoples of Europe were in a mood to celebrate their freedom from the old older, together. And if there was something most European countries had in common, it was an endless variety of games with roughly similar rules, all of them having been descended from the jeu de paume, or even older, Roman games. So, it came as no surprise when, during a conference in the German city of Preßburg, a few members of the Italian and Spanish delegations - up to and including Anna Cattaneo, daughter of the Milanese statesman Carlo Cattaneo and his companion, Anna Woodcock - decided to play a couple games of pallone, or pelota, under a mixed set of rules.

This innovation spread like wildfire throughout continental Europe and South America first, and the rest of the world later, even though the new rules did not replace the old ones specific to each country or region - serving merely as a lingua franca, allowing for international matches to take place. The first World Cup, organized by the Confoederatio Internationale pro Manufollio - that had adopted a simplified version of Latin as its working language - was held in Greece in 1870, more specifically in Constantinople, that had been taken over by the Hellenes in the aftermath of the Sublime Porte's downfall. The success of this competition, that saw the Netherlands, represented by a team mostly composed of Walloon players, prevail over favourites Italy, indirectly inspired the rebirth of the Olympics in 1896.
