TL-191: After the End

Hello!!! I am new member here and I am very impressed in this thread. May I ask a question??

Thank you. And yes, questions are always welcome.

Ds the Empire State Building, chrysler tower, exist in TTL???
What is the economic status of the Philippines??

Neither the Empire State Building or te Chrysler Building exist. But New York City has its share of landmarks in TTL.

As for the Philippines, it’s a country, as of TTL’s 2020, with one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The Philippines have particularly benefited from close economic ties with both China and the United States.

What about Andorra, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City in this timeline?

As of TTL’s 2020, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City are independent states, though not formal members of the European Community. However, the independence of the Vatican was not formalized until the 1950s in TTL.

Malta, since the end of the Second Great War, has been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

What's life like in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as of 2020?

Are the three countries still ruled by the German nobility or was there eventual equality?

Got a question for you about the 2162 epilogue:

By 2162, Texas has been independent and separate from the United States for over two centuries. Obviously, I'd imagine there's a separate "Texan" identity- however, is the English spoken in Texas noticeably different from that in America? Such as "American English", "British English", "Texan English?"

I'd be surprised if Manhattan didn't have it's share of Skyscrapers. A combination of the US economy generally being pretty good (arguably the Economic Powerhouse of the Western Hemisphere and one of if not the largest economy in the world by the early 20th century), NYC being the economic capitol of the US, and the geography of Manhattan being such that inevitably pressure exists to build up rather then out. Considering the socialist semi keynesian policies of the TL 1930's I also wouldn't be surprised if there was at least a mini building spree. Perhaps have something like a social housing Skyscraper befitting the politics of the day. Something designed to both provide employment in building it and provide housing to the poor. Probably a lot less efficient then building a larger number of shorter buildings but I could see it as a propaganda thing.

Probably wouldn't have been the OTL Empire State Building or Chrysler building but something similar. Their might be a "Chrysler Building" of some sort since to my knowledge Chrysler was in TL still one of the largest US auto corporations. Perhaps sky scrapers with more Revachanist/patriotic names. Something like the "Yankee Tower" or "Remembrance Tower."

The overall quality of life in the region is very high. The region also remains closely tied to the German Empire, both politically and economically.

There is legal political equality in the region. However, local politics remain dominated by pro-German factions.

There certainly is a pronounced difference in terms of accents. Ironically, in TTL, the Texas accent of 2162 was strongly shaped by the post-SGW mass migration into Texas of people from elsewhere in the former CSA who wouldn’t accept US rule.

Of course, for all of the differences between the USA and Texas in 2162, both countries remain very closely tied, in terms of their economic relationship and through the CDS alliance. There was an attempt at reunion in the 2040s, which failed.

You make some excellent points. In TTL there certainly are skyscrapers in New York City. Just not the skyline familiar to us. Building styles in TTL may be more austere and “functional” in look during the first generation after the SGW, with more varied styles making their mark in terms of urban design later on in the century.

I imagine civil defense is also very much a signifigantly larger issue in NYC then it was OTL. There's the real risk that NYC might end up being bombed from the air or shelled from at sea. So their might be a trend towards more durable building types. By the SGW probably has something like mandatory bomb shelters in all new buildings, bomb shelters in public buildings, and a public shelter every so many blocks. I wouldn't be surprised if the NYC Subway wasn't partially intended to act as public bomb shelters from the start. Similarly coastal defense and AAA defense are both much more important then OTL with a signifigant military presence in and around NYC. There's probaby mandatory bomb drills in public schools.

Similarly I imagine there's some sort of militia/ home guard type force during war time composed of those in reserved occupations, older veterans, and those too young to enlist/be drafted or supplement coastal defenses, civil defense, public security, and manning AA batteries/ searchlights. I wouldn't be surprised if Governors island is more or less still one big military base. Hell on OTL Liberty Island we know there's a TL "Statue of Remembrance". I'd say there's pretty good odds there are still active coastal artillery batteries up to the SGW. So a much more militarized and fortified city then OTL. Perhaps more "Brutalist" then OTL as there's a push to build lots of concrete replacement buildings to make up for SGW damage and provide extra social housing. In OTL in the late 1800's there was a trend in NYC and elsewhere in the US to build lots of NG armories that were essentially stylized bunkers. That's probably even more true in TL.

Brilliant TL!!! This is the reason why I joined this group.

Btw, can you elaborate what's "Japanese Spring" and its implications?
Is the "Quiet Fighter" of US is similar/more/less to F-22?
What's the appearance of the modern cars of this TL?
Sorry I am curious of some things😊

It’s the term applied by contemporary observers in the early 2010s in TTL to describe the collapse of the Japanese Workers Republic. Eventually a new regime, led by the banned Ecological movement, takes over the former JWR. By 2162 the Japanese Ecological Union is arguably the worst place to live in the world.

Is the "Quiet Fighter" of US is similar/more/less to F-22?

It was meant as an analogue to our world’s stealth aircraft.

It depends on the company. One aspect of automotive design in TTL’s 2009 - at least from some German and Austro-Hungarian manufacturers absent from our world is a self conscious drive towards either more of what might be called a “sci-fi” look (such as designs influenced by artistic and architectural motifs from this world taken from Raygun Baroque, Brazil Decco, or German/Austro-Hungarian surrealism). In general, US, German, and Austro-Hungarian designs, as of TTL’s 2009, have something of a diesel pink look to them, albeit with more efficient engines.

Very good points on urban civil defense in this world NYC.

Another notable feature of TTL’s US urban landscape are the large number of war memorials. As of TTL’s 2009, every major city has its own memorial district. Washington, DC has the feel of a mausoleum city in many ways.

I'd imagine a monument to Bill Reach and the heroes of the Occupation (hear Nellie rolling around in her grave!), as well as something representing reunification between USA and CSA. Something fun might be a statue of Washington facing south, towards the Confederacy, located on TTL's equivalent to the National Mall.
Perhaps the office where Alfred von Schlieffen stayed in How Few Remain could be preserved as well...

EDIT:
I imagine Philadelphia would have a huge monument to the 1944 attack, perhaps on the spot where Clarence Potter parked his truck.

That vaguely depresses me as a former resident of the city - I'm always bucking up for it. Hopefully it becomes and feels more lively by 2162 at least! :p
