Seems that it was a really close race for the presidency, ahn? Also, besides the survival of the federalists, what effects the lack of Andrew Jackson as president had in the US, I only know he drastically increased the power of the president and was responsible for causing the genocide of Native Americans East of the Mississippi, so without him does it still happen or not?
Yep, much like OTL 1824, it was very close and ended up being decided by the House (I wished I could retcone it actually to make Jackson win Delaware so they would tie. It would make things more dramatic). WIthout Jackson in power Hamilton would push for his economic reforms that are similar to the plans of Adams and Clay. A "Bank of the United States", and a more organized economic system tied to the federal government. He would probably also increase the executive power quite a bit. I don't see him supporting anything like the trail of tears, which would bring tension between him and the southern states governments. I imagine he would also have a more anti-slavery stance, though he would probably not actively put forth any federal legislation on the matter. It would certainly bring the debate to a earlier period, while IOTL it was more quiet during the Jackson years.

Hrm. Wouldn't John Quincy Adams be a Federalist if the party is still up and running?

IOTL Adams was kicked out of the Federalist Party in 1807, due to his policies being too friendly to Jefferson and Madison. Same thing happens here. Philip kept the party alive during the 1810's, but 1807 was way too early for him to have an impact on Adams.

In an absolut world.

That probably counts as current politics.

Well, it happened seven years ago. I posted it here because (for instance) I've seen TL's about Mitt Romney/the 2012 U.S. election, so I figured that it's essentially the same period of time.

Also, to be honest, everything that has happened since then feels like a lifetime.

Yeah, I think it's okay

Wikibox from a timeline idea I have bouncing around. Essentially, the idea is Dave Barrett wins the 1989 NDP Leadership Election on a platform of combating rising 'western alienation' and reorienting the party towards Western interests. This leads to the Chretien Liberals winning an even bigger landslide in the 1993, including a wealth of seats in the West thanks to immense three-way vote splitting between the PCs, Barrett-led NDs, and Reform. This continues throughout the 90's with the Liberals eventually cannibalizing what is left of the PCs into a broad-based, socially-liberal, eastern-oriented, and 'free enterprise' grand coalition.

By the early 2000s, the NDP and Reform parties eventually hammer out a merger agreement brokered by fiscally-conservative Alberta NDP Premier and former Mayor of Edmonton Laurence Decore (the result of the other butterflies himself!), eventually forming Government for the first time in 2008 under Prime Minister Ed Stelmach. The ensuing unholy amalgam functions as a moderate Western-dominated brokerage party with an emphasis on balanced budgeting, strong social programs, direct democracy, labour rights, and protection for Western economic interests including patronage for the oil and gas sector, in contrast to the environmentalist 'Green Tory' bent of the Liberals.

Mad I know - imagine something the Saskatchewan NDP but national and with both a far-left wing and a faction similar to Katter's Australian Party, united by an urge to let those rich, eastern bastards freeze in the dark.
Oh, I like this. I've seen NDP harnessing western alienation, and I've seen stillborn Reform, but I don't think I've seen the NDP absorb Reform. That is such a bizarre combination that it circles around into almost seeming sensible. I'd definitely read a TL or series that explored it.

not as canon as the last one but still fun I hope

The Five Wisdoms is considered the first great work of Philosophy of the Post-War Era, and the foundational text of Neo-Harmonism.

The work is divided into Five Books, one for each of the four elements, outlining the basic societies and governing philosophies of each of the classical nations, followed by a discussion of the bending of each nation, with origins, methods, and philosophies discussed for each. The fifth book “Harmony” is far more philosophical than the rest of the already philosophical work. It mediates on the peace and progress that can be found via compassion and working with others, while emphasizing the common unity of the human experience.

Mushi’s work on the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes are well regarded and insightful, but not particularly groundbreaking. Introductory courses will cover the material, but it has not been groundbreaking. However the Fire and Air books are a different story. “Fire” is a plain rebuke of almost all Fire Nation though post-Sozin, rejecting anger based Fire Bending entirely. It is not entirely a return to pre-Sozin philosophy, it has a take on lightning quite similar to the old official line, but remains a cornerstone of modern Fire Bending thought, as well as on the government of the Fire Nation. Fire Lord Zuko was a known reader of the work, as is Izumi.

The work on Airbending undoubtedly bears a debt of gratitude to Avatar Aang, who likely supplied much of the source material either from personal recollections or scroll fragments from Air Temples. However it is undeniably an outsider’s perspective in Air Nomad philosophy, a rarity even in pre-war times. In particular Mushi questions the demands for cutting connections with the material world. While the philosophy of the new Air Nation remains relatively new, it seems as though those running it have taken some of Mushi’s thoughts to heart.

The final book, “Harmony” offers more personal touches. It explains the ways nations have influenced each other, often in positive ways. It derides the idea that any element is superior to the others. It states that all should work together regardless of origin in the hopes of preserving peace between nations. This can also be applied to daily life, Mushi argues that dialogue, cooperation, and unity can make one’s life far more fulfilling. This heavily mirrors the the states goals of the Order of the White Lotus. “Harmony” fittingly takes influence from the Harmonism Philosophy of Politics, but applies it at a far more personal level, thus starting the trend of Neo-Harmonism. This has had an influence on everything from the United Republic of Nations to the Equalist Movement (although in a vary roundabout way that rejects the Four Nation concept entirely)

Much ink has already been spilled on the identity of Mushi, who wrote only one other work, a work of assorted sayings and proverbs entitled “Thoughts.” Mushi only identifies himself as a “lover of tea.” Copies of the work were initially found in Ba Sing Se, although they quickly spread. Certainly Mushi’s familiarity with Fire Bending and relative distance from Earth Bending certainly separates him from the fiercely jingoistic rhetoric emerging from the tea houses of the Earth Kingdom at the time. It has been suggested that Mushi was a member of the Order of the White Lotus, considering his international outlook and apparent ability to contact the Avatar.

In its journey from Livingstone to Lusaka, Group Atlantic faced mild resistance in the settlement of Mazabuka, a moderately-sized town three-quarters of the way to the Zambian capital. The fight was short, and it resulted in the capture of some seventy Zambian POWs. Major Maxwell Taylor and a contingent of 200 Rhodesian infantrymen were left behind to control the prisoners. Taylor immediately cleared out a field, where the POWs were kept. Mazabuka soon became the principal temporary encampment for captured Zambian servicemen, as Rhodesia occupied the totality of Zambia and the government collapsed. Within days, Mazabuka held well over 700 POWs, most of whom would be later transported to Rhodesia once the railway lines were reestablished.

The mistreatment of prisoners in Mazabuka was 'appalling, even for Rhodesian standards'. The dirt field where they were kept was barricaded with abandoned vehicles and barbed wire. They were given no provisions and no shelter. They were fully exposed to the blistering sun, the coldness of the night, and the rain. 'It didn't took long before starvation and general malcontent set in. The prisoners were very angry.' Any expression of discontent, however, was swiftly and violently repressed by the Rhodesian military. 'Guard brutality was by far the worst. They were beaten and injured. They were dragged across the floor. They were subjected to psychological torture. They were forced to be in uncomfortable positions for hours and hours under the sun. They were mutilated and bound with ropes while naked. The most vicious forms of human mistreatment took place in Mazabuka.' There exist reports of an occasion when a prisoner was electrocuted with a car battery, and another one when they were forced to eat their own excrement.

Early on the 24th, the rail connection between Mazabuka and Livingstone was rebuilt and open for operation. However, it was operating at limited capacity. 'There were concerns that keeping the POWs for too long would incite a revolt. They couldn't wait for the railway to reach full capacity. So they had to reduce the numbers of POWs."

Taylor himself ordered the executions. The Zambians were dragged into a wall and shot. Row after row of POWs were murdered in cold blood. Then, they set loose the servicemen unto the field, and they indiscriminately shot any Zambian they saw. Within an hour, 782 laid dead. The bodies were piled and set ablaze. The Mazabuka Massacre was one of the most horrifying events of modern African history. It was a grim example of what Rhodesia's mission was - to exterminate the black African race. 'They wanted the blacks gone. They wanted to kill them so bad it was scary. Their campaign of mass executions and systemic death-making goes beyond anything I can imagine.'"

-Eugene Markusson, Carnage: Rhodesia's Campaign of Ethnic Cleansing (1986)

The Buenaventura directorial election of 1871 was the first directorial election to be held after the declaration of independence from Spain and the promulgation of the constitution, which established a Directory consisting of nine directors, each of whom would be elected for six years, and with staggered terms so that every two years three directors were up for election. D'Arcy McGee, the "Washington of Buenaventura" and fierce Buenaventuro nationalist, was the first leader of the Directory, having served as Intendant of the Federal Treasury. While officially this position was akin to a finance minister, the lack of a real head in the Directory meant that McGee was able to make himself into the head of government in all but name. Today, the Intendant of Buenaventura continues to serve as the head of government as a result of this. He also organized the administration into the Unionist Party, advocating a strong union and also Anglo-Spanish biculturalism and bilingualism. He and his fellow directors Seguin and Ludington were up for election in 1871.

They faced a challenge in the form of two parties. First, the People's Party, which advocated substantial reform of the economic system and decentralization in the name of farmers, but also contained many pro-American annexationists. Also, there were the Anti-Federationists, consisting largely of Hispanic people who found Buenaventura far too Anglophone and advocated establishing a very loose confederation. McGee was able to appeal to many owing to being both Anglophone and Catholic; this meant appeal for him was among both Anglophones and Hispanophones. This appeal expanded to the rest of his party.

The election, held under bloc vote, was broadly a Unionist victory. However, due to the nature of this bloc vote system, where a voter was given three votes to vote for who he wished, confused many and caused a lot of strange vote splitting, and this and the unpopularity of Director of Foreign Affairs Harrison Ludington led to his defeat and the Populist William Robert Taylor eking by into the Directory,

The son of Founding father Alexander Hamilton, Philip Hamilton embarked, from an early age, into the political world, following his father's footsteps into the arena of governance. A Federalist, much like his father before him, Philip supported the development of a strong financial system that would safeguard the country from instabilities. He publicly opposed the Madison Administration, and first gained national prominence as a staunch opponent of the War of 1812. When the war became a certainty, however, he enlisted in the Army, achieving the rank of Colonel and serving with great distinction in the Canadian front. His actions in the war earned him "War Hero" status", placing him alongside such figures as Andrew Jackson and William Harrison.

After the war, Philip returned to the world of New York politics, before being elected to the Senate, rising to the position of de facto head of the Federalist Party. Preserving a strong opposition to the Madison and Monroe administrations, Hamilton ran for president in 1820, but was defeated by his Democratic-Republican opponent.

A famous orator, Hamilton had the ability to persuade even political enemies to his side. A famous example would be Henry Clay, who joined the Federalist ranks in the early 1820's, and campaigned extensively for him in 1824. The election proved deeply divisive. The Democratic-Republicans had been split into three factions, one led by former Federalist John Quincy Adams, who held great sway in the federalist stronghold of New England. With the aid of Clay, Hamilton secured a majority of the electoral and popular vote, but failed to achieve the necessary number for a victory. In the famous "corrupt bargain", John Quincy Adams (who shared many policies with Hamilton), agreed to grant him his delegates, guarantying the victory for the New Yorker. Adams would be highly influential in the Hamilton administration, while Clay would serve as Secretary of State and later achieve the Presidency himself.

After his time in the White House, Hamilton enjoyed a long political career, being elected to the governorship of New York and later to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Hamilton had a notorious public life. His marriage to Theodosia Burr, daughter of the man who had shot and killed his father, attracted national attention. His sons all followed into his political footsteps, cementing the Hamilton Dynasty.
One: Amazing. Two: He married THEODOSIA, really? That's hilarious.

And the last of the major parties in Equestria.

PDJl0M6.png

The description uhhh got long.

The Everfree Party is an Equestrian political party and one of the two primary opposition parties to the Triple Crown Party. The party is a center-right party with positions pushing social and economic liberalization. It has a unique distinction in its history as being the only recent party to begin as a solely reserved ridings party and then branching out to successfully contesting general ridings. The Everfree Party started its involvement only in earth pony politics. Its founders, Bannofee of Canterlot and Gros Michel of Trottingham, had become disaffected from the traditional earth pony politics that pitted the rural based Country Party with the Manehattan-based and urban focused Municipal Development League. In 883 of the Celestial Era, the two ponies began their own party as an alternative to the two parties that could unite both demographics of earth ponies.

The party's liberal bent has been a constant theme of its policies since its founding and based much of its positions on promoting the idea that ponies and all creatures have the ability to govern their own affairs themselves. The party even takes its name from the Everfree Forest, one of the most well known examples of, as the Everfreer platform states, "natural self-governance" in Equestria. As the old pony's tale goes, in the Everfree Forest the plants grow, the animals care for themselves, and the clouds move all on their own. The Everfree Party's political positions also value this ability of a creature to care for themselves and govern their affairs all on their own. In some issues, these ideas fall into a conventional realm of policy. For example, as with the recent developments in the Celestial administration and Tricrowner policy, the Everfree Party advocates lowering trade barriers between Equestria and other nations and forging treaties and alliances to make Equestria more interconnected with the wider world. However, in some areas, Everfreer policy can seem farfetched even for earth pony politics. On weather management, while the Everfreers do not go so far as the strict thermalism of the Free Soil Party in earth pony politics, the Everfreers have modified their brand of convectionism. The Everfree Party wants to decentralize cloudsourcing and cloud production and establish local centers of production and distribution rather than having all weather apparatus manufactured in Cloudsdale's production facilities. They claim that while input from both earth ponies and pegasi is valuable on issues such as the necessary level of cloudsourcing and on snowpack and watershed distribution, centralized weather manufacture is inefficient and would be better managed with less cloud waste closer to the deployment destination of the weather. Additionally, the party argues that having weather manufacturing in locations around Equestria would help the economy, citing centralized weather manufacture in Cloudsdale as depriving good jobs from far flung pegasi across Equestria who may have a weather production cutie mark but not the ability to travel to Cloudsdale to seek a job there.

Gros Michel and Bannofee faced difficulty bridging the division between the rural and urban earth ponies at first. Rural earth ponies were primarily employed in agriculture, while those in the city centers such as Manehattan or the few earth ponies in Canterlot at the time were primarily employed either as craftsponies or in the mercantile trade. This class divide between the two major demographics heightened the already existing urban-rural divide and the entrenched politics between the Country Party and the Municipal League, making it difficult to drive a wedge into the existing politics works. The first success the Everfree Party had was in Northeast Equestria with Gros Michel's candidacy. Northeast Equestria not only contained Gros Michel's hometown of Trottingham on the Griffish Isles, but also seemed uniquely suited to the Everfreers' policies. The earth pony riding encompassed much of the eastern Crystal Mountains and the city of Rainbow Falls, but its main population center for earth ponies was on the Griffish Isles at the far edge of Equestria. The area's proximity to Griffonstone led to more local trade and even migration with the griffons even during Equestria's isolationist period, and the extreme distance from Cloudsdale and even Rainbow Falls made the ponies of the Griffish Isles more receptive to early thermalist weather management doctrine. It still took the Everfree Party nearly two dozen years to win a seat and Gros Michel entered the Equestrian parliament in 905 as the first elected Everfreer.

The party grew in urban earth pony circles as the Municipal Development League became dominated by Manehattan and representation of other cities dropped, and soon the Everfreers gained earth pony ridings in Filyldelphia and Baltimare. Around the middle of the last century during Pinwire's leadership of the Everfree Party, party strategists noticed that the local organization of the Everfree vote in certain earth pony ridings could lead to crossover into contesting general ridings. Pinwire's leadership saw the party expand to general ridings, and that local organization helped them win three general seats in their first election contesting those. Since then, the Everfreers have solidified a substantial base in those original seats: Orkneigh-Shetland and Trottingham in the Griffish Isles and Twhickerham in Canterlot. Since then, the Everfree Party has also solidifed its presence in earth pony politics, and now stand at a total of 10 seats evenly divided between earth pony and general ridings. Some of their success is down to the gaining popularity among urban earth ponies, but they have also gained popularity for their consistent liberal internationalist stance among much of the griffon population in Equestria, and even among some pegasi who support decentralized cloudsourcing and a shift toward thermalism as a labor saving cost. They even elected a pegasus, Juniata, in the Pferdsylvania South riding due to the recent influx of griffons and dragons into the traditionally pegasus area near Fillydelphia. Additionally, even though the Everfreers have been locked out of the Griffish Isles general ridings in the past two elections, the party still makes Orkneigh-Shetland, Donkaster, and Trottingham some of the closest three way marginal ridings in Equestria. Recently, party leader Portwine said she would be open to a coalition with the Tricrowners after the last election when it briefly appeared that the Triple Crown Party might not reach a majority of ridings in parliament.

highest rank in the Civil Service and chairs the Cabinet. The Prime Minister is formally approved by the National People's Congress after being nominated by the President of the Socialist Republic, who's pleasure he serves at. The candidate is selected from within the British Socialist Party by the same process that selects members of the Politburo Standing Committee. The Prime Minister is (re)approved in the opening session of the National People's Congress following each election, which takes place every five years. The Prime Minister may resign or be dismissed by the President at any point, after which a successor will be approved within ten days. This also applies in the event the Prime Minister dies while in office. The current Prime Minister is George Galloway, who succeeded Ken Livingstone on 27 March 2014 after President Arthur Scargill dismissed him shortly after entering office after the death of President Benn.

Powers & Duties

The Prime Minister is the highest administrative position in the Government of the Socialist Republic of Great Britain and is responsible for organising and administering the civil bureaucracy of Great Britain. This includes responsibilities such as planning and implement national economic and social development and the budget. The Prime Minister also oversees various ministries, departments, commissions and agencies, in addition to appointing the Cabinet and nominating a Deputy Prime Minister for the approval of the National People's Congress.

The Prime Minister does not possess command authority over the British Armed Forces, but he does head the National Defence Mobilisation Commission. Prior to the British Revolution, the Prime Minister was typically the leader of the governing political party. Since the revolution, the President of the Socialist Republic is the General Secretary of the British Socialist Party and is responsible for gathering political support necessary for government policy, while the Prime Minister is responsible for the technical details of implementing government policy.

The Five Wisdoms

sNwIGue.jpg

Bumi was not born a Prince of Omashu, instead being the illegitimate son of King Inda IV and a court jester. In his youth he was a friend of Avatar Aang before the latter's disappearance. His trademark eccentric behavior developed during this time, often playing pranks on his family. However he would unexpectedly become heir apparent the year after the Air Nomad Genocide, as his legitimate brother Inda was killed as part of the Delegation of Reckoning, forcing Bumi to become the new heir.

Bumi would prove himself a powerful bender, helping give Fire Lord Sozin his first major defeat at Mu Bay, holding the landing off long enough with a combination of Earth Bending and interpretive dance for the Southern Fleet to destroy the Fire Lord’s fleet. This victory would ensure that for nearly the entire war, the Southern Earth Kingdom would remain free of occupation. Shortly thereafter Inda IV died in his sleep, and Bumi donned the crown of Omashu. Which he replaced with some antlers because “it looked way cooler.”

Bumi’s role in the early stages of the war was largely limited to supplying the vast armies of the North From the relatively secure south, and keeping the south inline. Many Kings of Omashu would have taken the opportunity to either declare independence from Ba Sing Se, or even allied with the Fire Lord to get even with their old rivals. But Bumi would hear none of it, famously ordering the construction of a mail chute from his throne room to the dungeons so that any defeatist advisors could be swiftly imprisoned.

The Rise of Azulon saw new challenges for Bumi. Omashu was forced to watch helplessly as her stalwart ally the Southern Water Tribe, was slowly dismembered by the Fire Nation. With the retreat South of the Tribesmen, the Fire Navy earned free reign over the seas, exposing much of the Earth Kingdom to raiding. Here Bumi’s diplomacy shone through. Despite his occasionally odd tactics (asking for “honest opinions of my hair” as tribute, trading gum for rock candy) the King of Omashu forged a powerful coalition in the south, bankrolled by rich families such as the Beifongs. Bumi stands out as one of the few Earth Kingdom leaders to have genuinely friendly relations with the sandbenders, whom he called “the only sane people on the planet” and “surprisingly good at cooking sunfishwhale, what with living in the desert and all”.

Bumi initially had good relations with the Earth Kings, sending support and men to aid in their desperate battles for control of the North. However as the Zheng Dynasty declined relations deteriorated. Newer kings feared Bumi’s Earth Bending skill, and thought he coveted the throne. To be fair, some did whisper that Bumi was the only king worth the name, particularly as the Fire Nation crept closer to Ba Sing Se. Bumi spurned all such talk, dutifully sending his tribute, although he did not help matters by sending pranks “in the hopes that I can get the Dai Li to laugh.”

The late stages of the War saw Bumi forced again to face combat personally, although he no longer could face armies alone. The Fire Nation broke out of the colonies and swamped the Earth Kingdom. The regency of King Kuei essentially ended any central direction of the war effort, and the Earth Kingdom fractured badly. Bumi played little role in the Defense of Ba Sing Se, although his presence on the Fire Nation’s Southern Flank did divert some troops from Iroh’s campaign.

Bumi was now the only person alive who remembered the war’s beginning.

Bumi would briefly host the Avatar on his way to the North Pole, then would face the Army of the Great Divide as it marched South on Omashu. Controversially he would surrender the city and himself without a fight, fearing mass casualties from an urban fight. He would spend his time imprisoned needling his captors with bad jokes. When the time came they were either so endeared that they surrendered without a flight or fled in terror.

However the Omashu Army was nonetheless able to withdraw in good order, and supplied many of the forces used on the Day of Black Sun. That same day, Bumi was able to escape his confinement and single handedly evict the Fire Nation from his city. He called it "a nice bit of exercise" and "very fun." This action seriously disrupted Fire Nation supply lines and prevented a total occupation of the South.

Bumi made his way North, likely via his contacts in the Order of the White Lotus, and joined the Order outside of Ba Sing Se. There he played a key role in the reconquest of the city, backing the renthronement of Kuei.

There is some dispute about whether Bumi used spiritual means to extend his life or whether he was just really old. When asked he replied "why not both?" And then laughed far too much. In any event, his health began to fade after the end of the war. He found time to become a great patron of Metalbending, infamously disguising himself as a child to get into the first classes offered by Toph Beifong.

Bumi never married ("I'm a king, if I want some cake I can get some cake without all the the trouble of getting married") and so obviously there was significant concern over who would succeed him. To put these fears to rest he organized a city wide scavenger hunt to select an heir, which was won by a cobbler named Mochee. Bumi would spend his last few years training Mochee in the arts of Earth Bending, ruling, and pie throwing.

King Bumi of Omashu would die aged 121 in 109, after the longest reign of any known monarch. His funeral was attended by all the world leaders, who got to witness a funeral procession designed by Bumi himself. There were bad puns, good puns, sing a longs and heartfelt goodbyes. And at the end everyone got a gift bag filled with rock candy.
