@Osk pretty maps but these usually end up just being population density maps. Isn't one of covid cases per capita more useful?

I think both are useful depending on what you want to know. If you want a clear picture of the total cases in a particular county, the above would be helpful. The fact counties with larger populations have more cases goes without saying, but that isn’t exactly the point of the maps. By the same token, if you want an idea of impact on a particular county, a per capita one would be helpful. I haven’t made one of those yet mostly when I started making the maps it was in order to replace someone else’s total cases by county map. That being said, I may start making a per capita map alongside the total cases map if I have the time!

I would suggest showing many subdivisions for future maps, such as which areas has who as the governor over it. Very common for that dynasty to do to deal with such a vast number of areas. Heck, Philip the II was given the position of King of Sicily, Naples, and Jerusalem (titular) so he would have a suitable rank when marrying Mary, being given all the lord, count, duke, etc titles the Habsburgs had in the Netherlands the year after the marriage. Might be one of their children, assuming they have multiple, is given those (Low Country ones, not Italian) titles combined with England and Ireland. Almost a shame you have the Dutch defeated here, as it means less chance for the English to contribute by wrecking their rivals and razing Holland and Zeeland.
Subdivisions are much more trouble than what they are worth, especially getting them right. And given it's always a best case scenario for the Habsburgs, the Dutch had to be part of the Empire

I spent two weeks researching and making this.

It wouldn’t be too big a problem. They were usually split based on what areas were closest to each other, so you would more just need to have different shades in different corners, rather than doing hundreds of pixels to decide on borders. Will you be removing the borders for Portugal, Croatia, Hungary, and Bohemia. For the next map? And what of the one splitting Burgundy? That staying there to show it as being officially under the King of France as a vassal, like the English Kings were with Normandy, Maine, Aquitaine, etc?

But yah, having all the kingdoms clomped together would be unfesible for administration and would make plenty of them revolt. Adding to the fun is that the children he has with Mary needed to be raised in England, as per the act of parliament detailing the terms of their marriage. Which should be fun. Though actually, looking it over again it seems Philip already had a son. It seems that unless that sin were to die, the ones from Mary would be King of England and Ireland (along with claiming France), but not more of the Smpire, unless it was handed over to him.

Burgundy is split because of the border of the HRE. BTW, the OTL heir to Philip II was born after Mary Tudor had died. His previous sons all died rather young. The raising issue wouldn't be that much of an obstacle given how Philip II himself lived quite a lot of years of his youth outside of Spain. And this yet-to-be-named heir would also become King of England before inheriting the whole Empire, something not that unusual. He might be remembered as a particularly English King/Emperor, but the center of the Empire would eventually go back to Madrid.

Reminds me of “After The End.”

That looks like...After the End?

EDIT: Wow, multi-ninja'd.
Yeah, I took some inspirations (the Murikan Confederation is effectively a re-skin of the HCC, the Amish are the most powerful faction in the Mid-Atlantic, the Iowa is the powerhouse of the Midwest and a Native-dominated British Columbia) but there are far more original elements (Rome-Avignon analogue with the Toledo and Boston Papacies, Arab conquest analogue with the Desereti Empire, a primarily nomadic Great Plains [Seriously, how the hell did feudalism survive without the Ogallala?] and much weirder stuff) than there are borrowed. Should be interesting to read once the more detailed posts start coming.

Being Canadian I thought it would be a cool idea for me to make alternate versions of Canada. A reminder that all of the maps are set in 2020.
TIMELINE 10000
Commonwealth of Canada

Following the British victory in the war of 1812, Its Canadian colony grew larger and while the US cease expansion due to its weakening forces. In the 1870s a war occurred between the British and Russians due to the situation in Central Asia. The Canadians would cease Alakasa in the following invasion and a later British victory however would pay around $25 Million for Alaska to help rebuild relationships with Russia. During the great war, the USA and Canada would get into conflict with each other as the USA join the Central Powers. The Canadians still win thanks to the US never recovering from its civil war. By 2020 Canada is one of the new superpowers in the world other than Brazil, which has taken the USA placed.

TIMELINE 310
Republic of Williamiuland

William of orange would unite the Kingdom of England and the Dutch republic into one state. Once then they would soon launch several colonization efforts in the Americas. The United States still declares independence and its upward colony, Williaumland, name after William of orange, remain as an Anglo-Dutch colony. in 1867 the Dominion of Williamumland was established and would soon fight with the anglo-dutch, the US and other states against France, Russia snd Serbia in the great war. In 1984 the nation voted to become a republic, leaving the Anglo-Dutch empire however it still has great relationships.

TIMELINE 6213
The Provisional Republic of Canada.

In 1983 a third world war broke out between NATO and the Warsaw pact. On May 23 1988 a nuclear war occurs as the two sides believe that nuclear weapons were launch. following the nuclear war and nearly and estimated 2 billion dead (both wars, nuclear strikes and radiation all added together). By 1998 the Canadian government and its citizens ahs re-arisen from their bunkers and would quickly expands across the former nations. In the west, the Canadian government establish its capital in Vancouver (which avoided being nuked) In 2008 the international community regain contact with each other and trading soon begins. Canada is still in a provisional government (est to end in 2028, 40 years following the end of WW3)

TIMELINE 151
Republic of Quebec

Following the French and its allies to victory in the 7-year war, The French gain total control of America. However, those damn Canadians and Louisianans were angry at not paying their taxes and fought a successful war against them. The French would also battle against British napoleon btw. The Canadians or Quebec I guest would never expand west and so Alaska would take most of the western states.

TIMELINE 109
Dominion of Western province

The British decided to divide the Canadian colonies into 2 dominions. Both of them are basically Australia and New Zealand but in North America.

TIMELINE 80
Kingdom of Vinland

The Norwegians would stay their colonies of Vinland. The vinish expands and becomes the first independent state from a European state in the Americas. Eventually, the Greater Empire of Vinland dissolves into a bunch of states and the remainder state remanded as modern-day Canada. Scandinavia is also the superpowers of this world. Nordic nations are pretty much the British of this timeline.

TIMELINE 40
The Federal Socialist Republic of Canada

The race riots in the USA in the 60s turn violent and soon political division cause the nation to experience a civil war. Because of this, the European nations become more soviet aligned and before you know it the USA collapses by the late 80s. This allowed the Soviets to win the cold war and the remaining European and western nations became Communist. by the 1990s a revolution occurred and in Canada and soon the whole country became a socialist state and is apart of the Moscow pact, a larger version of the warsaw pact. However, the Soviets are forced to fight proxy wars in the middle east and also china hates them Russians. Also, the American Union is the Russia to the US, IE they still have a cold war-like tension as well as having a CSA.

TIMELINE 1000
The Unitarian States of Canada.

The Fascist party of Canada would spark a coup against the government allowing the Germans to land in North America and invades the rest of the USA and Canada following the victory of its invasion of both the Uk and Russia. Following the German Reich victory in the second world war, a cold war occurred between the Germans and Italians against the Japanese. Canada is a fascist state however is independent thanks to the fascist coup and rebellion while the Americans are puppet states. The unitarians are however salty hover Japan taking it west coast. The Canadians are also a founding member of the Great Pact of steel, a new form of the axis powers.

TIMELINE 500
Iroquois Confederacy

The Europeans would fail to colonize the Americas and only have a few small colonies and ports. Because of this Europe never become a colonial power and the Americas, Africa and Asia are never colonized. In the great lakes, the Iroquois Confederacy would grow to become a major regional power and would act as the USA of some sort. With this Europe still trades with the natives as they soon grow into new countries. Their main rivals are the Aztecs and the Inuits of the north. They have also maded an alliance with England who fought with each other in the great war in 1925.

I hope you enjoy this. It took me a while to make.
Very nice! Happy Canada day! Our home on stolen ground!

I think that the most effective point of divergence for making Germanic-speaking peoples dominant in Eastern Europe to the point where they completely subsume the proto-Slavs would involve preventing the Huns from invading Europe. As a result, the Gothic kingdom that corresponded to the Chernyakhov culture of present-day Ukraine (assuming that you believe that the legends are more historically accurate than not) stays put and solidifies into a proper state in the manner of the Kievan’ Rus, assimilating most of the inhabitants of the area into the prevailing Gothic culture.

Well, that's definitely a Migrations era POD (mid-300s or so), and things are a lot more fluid. Giving the Ostrogoths a breather of a century or so could accomplish a lot, although they are going to have to establish themselves solidly to the north of the steppe zone: it's going to be pretty nomad-intensive there for the next millennium or so, Huns or no Huns (although I'm not sure the Huns staying put in Asia doesn't mean some other nomadic group gets knocked west in the long-running steppe game of billiard balls. ) Of course, not all nomadic invasions are equal (see Magyars vs Huns)

As the series is French we can give it a partial pass. Not completely, but at least the person has it like that explicitly so they can focus on things on the ground floor. If they wrote a book series I would be more concerned, as it would imply France was so important the Germans put all focus keeping the Anglophones on the coast, rather than keeping the Soviets out of Germany,
Yea, I feel like the author just wanted to focus on a Cold War Germany-type scenario in Jour J rather than trying to wrap his brain around creating a non-ASB POD that leads up to that scenario, and nothing truly wrong with that in a comic book. It just can't be taken too seriously for multiple reasons.
  1. If the hurricane occurred naturally (which is already doubtful for an area such as the Channel), the Allies would have easily picked that up on the weather surveys and postpone D-Day. Nothing short of good(-enough) weather was going to cut it.
  2. All the same, with the hurricane present, the Germans would reasonably deduce that any invasion of the northern French coast by the Allies would be severely delayed, and would simply move troops towards the Eastern Front to hold off the Soviets.
  3. Yalta already confirmed the splits, and Stalin wasn't a high-stakes gambler. He knew the US is close to getting the nuke, it would take a while for him to get one himself, even through stealing intel from the Manhattan project. He wasn't about to abrogate from what's already a good deal (i.e. all of Eastern Europe under him) for a prolonged World War II against the Allies with an exhausted Red Army, crippled international prestige, severed Lend-Lease and instant sunshine at Baku or Leningrad.

His eventual OTL heir was indeed born after his marriage to Mary ended, but he already had a son from his first marriage to a Portuguese Princess, who died within days of giving birth to Carlos. Given what the article says in Carlos... Yes, probably better for the Habsburgs if he did not live. In the other hand a child with the Tudors would reset a bit of the incest that was going on. Not entirely given who Mary’s mother was, but at least it by a bit.

Progress made on my Nazi Victory map, which features a Nazi Germany that won WW2...and slowly lost the peace. There's some Turtledove-style Parallelism with the Italo-German split mirroring the Sino-Soviet split. But there are some major differences as well, and overall the world is much worse for it.

1) The Nazis don't care about the global export of their ideology, they focus much more on dominating Europe. They offer slight help to certain Latin and African states only as a means to annoy the Anglo-American Bloc.
2) The Nazis are obsessive about the exaltation of the "Herrenvolk" - they focus heavily on placing ethnic Germans in positions of power across Eastern Europe, a process often accompanied by wholesale violence and theft.
3) The Nazis are obsessive about mauling France and making it a de facto colony and captive market.
4) The Nazi successions involve semi-frequent palace coups and subsequent instability. Oftentimes, their spherelings exploit this to extract concessions...and some eventually go free.
5) Eventually, in the early-2000s (the current map year is 2020), Western Europe finally breaks free, and rapidly integrates with the Anglo-American Bloc.

Whooooo! Been a long time coming, let's hope the dioceses are a little more cooperative. All one hundred twenty-five (pending recognition of the External Dominion) sectors of the Ecumene, from 000 (The Ecumenical-Boreal core) to 003 (Hesperia and the Near Branch of the Hydra) to 042 (the Near Wedge) and beyond, all the way to sector 444.

Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Future

The political spectrum is a needlessly constricting tool. Given that human beings are imperfect, inherently irrational creatures, attempting to quantify and classify political beliefs is like trying to pin down a ghost with a thumbtack. In general, though, throughout most of history, systems of government have remained close to the center of their era's Overton window. In some cases, however, skewed centrism falls to the wayside, and radical ideas on the left and right sides of the spectrum take hold. Usually, there was some catalyst necessary to justify such an upheaval of the existing social order, some great injustice leveled upon a people who cannot stand their predicament any longer. Radicalism breeds revolution, and revolution in turn breeds radicalism.

At the end of the Great War, radicalism seethed and writhed from every corner. The war stemmed from a fair number of transgressions and tribulations exchanged between the powers of the Old World, but what set Europe on the path to global war was a series of mishaps and misunderstandings that occurred at the dawn of the twentieth century during the Boxer Rebellion and, later, the Chinese Civil War. Snap decisions dealing with the future of East Asia resulted in new alliances formed and old rivalries heating up, and the situation was not helped when the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the shambling old man clad in the cloak of the ancient and grand Habsburg family, splintered in 1910 due to German intervention after the nation attempted to extricate itself from most affairs and reexamine its corroding inner workings. Ethnic lines were drawn in the former empire, and for a time taking sides in the ensuing civil war was enough to satiate the European powers who salivated over total dominance. Still, this could not last forever, and in 1912 war broke out due to colonial disagreements between the Germans and French in Morocco. The war that followed was like nothing in history in its sheer size and destructive capabilities. It dragged on for nine long and painful years, taking the entire continent of Europe, as well as the United States of America and East Asia, down with it. There were no winners. There was no great victory. One day, the fighting simply was over, and everyone went home, bitter and disgusted. The sheer waste of human life that had just transpired was despicable. Suddenly, the equation for radicalism had been solved. And with radicalism came revolution.

No one ideology swept the globe. Instead, various ways of thinking, both new and old, took hold in nations around the world. The mighty British Empire had grown disillusioned with honor and the old ways due to the war and turned to the teachings of Marx and Engels. France and the United States wished to leave the dark days behind them and escaped into tomorrow with their adoptions of futurism. Russia was overwhelmed by revanchism and greed, and when a man from the east declared himself to be the heir to the Mongol Empire and the Great Khan, the tsar was toppled without a second thought as the people satiated their hunger with annexations. Japan collapsed into total anarchy, and only through a complex web of alliances was a nation that would make the Holy Roman Empire blush at its intricacies salvaged. China's two halves, separated from their earlier civil war, pursued entirely opposite directions, with the north rabidly supporting the new Oracle Dynasty, a radically conservative new group that wished to literally bring China back to its ancient roots, while the south turned to the American flavor of futurism. Even in Germany, the kaiser was not safe, though the country suffered the least as it transitioned to liberal democracy, just like northern Korea had when Japan receded. South America, Africa, South Asia, and Oceania were not as lucky, and fell to radical, often totalitarian, ideas as the months went by. Radicalism breeds revolution, after all.

Here' s a map of France inspired by the Jour J comic strip: Paris, Soviet sector. In this fiction, a hurricane hits Normandy on the day of the Allied landing. As a result, it failed and 6 months later, the Allies landed in Provence, but remained stuck around Lyon, which was destroyed. Consequently, the Soviets drive out the German Army from Germany and their combat continues on the French soil. Therefore, the Wallies and the Soviets make their junction at the level of the Seine. De Gaulle in this TL died killed in a plane crash, the southern part of France is placed under AMGOT. The cold war between the Communist bloc and the USA took place, with a Soviet territorial advance which in addition to holding all of Germany, also held the Netherlands and Belgium. The iron curtain is therefore installed along the Seine, cutting Paris in half and where Checkpoint Charlie is located (like Berlin in OTL). In the northern part, a French people's republic is being set up, under Soviet orbit, while in the south, the French Republic remains but under the American influence.

Very good map, I really liked this Jour J.
But I've always wondered what the rest of Soviet Europe looks like. For my part, I imagined a People's Republic of Bavaria, as was once implied. I also imagined that the rest of Germany should be divided into several states. I had also imagined a Belgian partition between communist Holland and communist France.

Did you host that image anywhere, perhaps? It's broken on my end, opening the image with the m2 menu seems to work.
