Here are the flags of the governors of the different Belgian colonies; that of Congo is OTL, but those of Cuba and Wei Hai Wei are ATL:

belgian flags.png

Shouldn't it be the other way around? The colonizer should be the canton.

Also, what's the Weihaiwei flag based on?

I looked on Google the flag of the governor of the Belgian Congo, it was exactly this. So I was inspired to do that of Cuba and WeiHaiWei. As for the symbol of WeiHaiWei, the lotus flower is representative of China, like the flags of Hong Kong and Macau, and the star is almost on the same basis as all other Belgian colonial flags : each colony has its star.

According to discussion on Flags of the World it's actually a maritime rank flag indicating that the GG was on board rather than the Governor's flag itself.

It's just that it reminded me of my chinese flag redesign from a few years ago, before I joined the AH forums. I was flattered that i might have inspired something

I've seen some flags designed for an (Ancient/ Post-Roman/ Pre-Modern, Modern, etc) Pharaoist Egypt, where the religion and/ or culture and/ or language survives to this day and some commenters expressing their interest in the topic. I am also interested in the idea, and if you have any design in mind please share it.

I have not yet finished all of the flags for the various states and statelets in my Crimson Skies-inspired Sparrow Avengers timeline. However, here's a recap of the flags I have done so far.

Pressburg City State (Bratislava City State) - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

Based on the 19th century flag of the city, which fully featured the city's long-lived and distinctive coat of arms (said coat of arms is also the national coat of arms of the ATL country). Because "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The country is interwar Bratislava and the general surrounding area. Along with Danzig, it is one of the few post-war city states of Europe. Bratislava is also referred to occassionally as Wilsonville. However, the name did not stick after WWI, as precisely 0.5 % of the locals had hoped. ;)

Považie Commonwealth (United Republic of Považie) - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

A tightly-knit federal republic corresponding with the geographic and historical region of the same name, the Commonwealth consists of three federal states - Upper Považie (capital: Žilina), Middle Považie (capital: Trenčín) and Lower Považie (capital: Piešťany). Several key institutions are distributed among the capitals of the three states, in order to avoid centralization of power in the federal capital. Territorially, the Commonwealth is based almost entirely along the Váh river valley, a fact that it uses to its economic advantage (being one of the most industrialized and economically prosperous of the successor statelets of Austria-Hungary). However, the overstretched and narrow shape of its national borders also leaves it fairly vulnerable, and its hard-earned economic prosperity has lured air pirates and foreign spies by the dozens. The territory of the Commonwealth was carved out of:
- what was formerly the Trenčín county, but without its northernmost part, the region of Kysuce (said region is now part of the Democratic Republic of Orava and Kysuce, since it was deemed "an acceptable loss of territory" by the early PC governments).
- the eastern half of the northwestern parts of the former Nitra county, i.e. the area corresponding to the Lower Považie region and the region around Stará Turá and the southern edges of the White Carpathians. (The rest of the northwestern parts of the county were annexed by the neighbouring Republic of Free Záhorie, becoming its northern regions.)

The coat of arms of the country combines the heraldry of the former Trenčín and Nitra counties. Some of the heraldic symbols from the two coats of arms found their way onto the national flag as well - the deer and fir motifs of the Trenčín county and the St. Ladislaus' battle axe of the Nitra county. The green fields symbolize the forests and mountains of the country, the snaking blue field symbolizes the river Váh and the white fields symbolize the white gravel found on the shallower shores of the river.

Democratic Republic of Orava and Kysuce - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

Do not be alarmed by the name of the DROK. The country actually means its lofty title, being a working multiparty democracy, though with flaws. No dictatorship here, thankfully.

By and large, the coat of arms and flag colours are based on the traditional coat of arms of the Orava county (three green/vert hills with an silver/argent river flowing across the bottom of the central hill, a black/sable bear standing on the same hill and two green/vert spruces (or firs ?) growing out of the adjacent two hills). However, given that the Kysuce region, a former part of the equally former Trenčín county, is a part of the DROK, this fact needed to be acknowledged somehow in the insignia.

The solution was simple: A green/vert deciduous tree was added to the hilltop behind the bear's back and another silver/argent stream was added below the already existing one in the lower part of the central hill. The original silver stream symbolized Orava, the principal river of the Orava county. The added second stream is a nod to the Kysuce region's equally eponymous main river - the Kysuca.

Republic of Turiec (a constituent state of the Confederation of Liptov and Turiec) - textured version / national coat of arms

The Republic of Turiec is one of the two constituent countries of the Confederation of Liptov and Turiec. Prime minister: Milan Hodža.

The Confederation was created largelly as a marriage out of economic and military necessity. There are certain stereotypes about the republics: Liptov has a more "folksy" reputation, Turiec has a somewhat more "intellectual" reputation.

The Miner State - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

The Miner State is a republic in central Slovakia, formed by many of the historical mining cities of the wider region, and their surroundings.

The Miner State is spread mostly through the northern parts of Hont and Pohronie. A fairly unique country for the setting, as it started out as an alliance of the traditional mining cities in the wider region, and they later formed a de facto republic of their own.

The hammers and mallets have nothing to do with communism. There are some leftist and rightist worker parties in this country (well, miners, duh), in addition to other centre-left and centre-right parties, and it's a multiparty liberal democracy. Those types of hammers and mallets have been extremely common for centuries in the heraldry of Slovak and Hungarian mining towns and mining regions, hence why they were chosen as accompanying charges for the national flag of this country. It's basically an "identity politics" flag - as much as the name of the country reflects the same attitude.

(Please don't shriek about the coat of arms looking a bit busy. It's supposed to be a combination of three existing county coats of arms (due to it lying, to various extents, on the territory of all three). And it's supposed to have been created by a local comittee that knew f-all about vexilology, just the basic rules of tincture in heraldry, etc.)

Compilation continued in the following post.

Kingdom of Gemer - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

The Kingdom of Gemer from the Sparrow Avengers universe. It covers most of the historic region and former county of the same name and is ruled by the later allohistorical descendants of House Andrássy. The coat of arms at the flag's centre is directly based on the coat of arms of the former Gemer/Gömör county. The only monarchy left in ATL Slovakia after Austria-Hungary collapsed, the Gemer branch of the Andrássys thought "Neato ! Now's our chance !".

I made this flag a long time ago and even posted it in one of the older flag threads, but I've remade some of its colours today. I'm pretty happy with the results and I don't plan to change it all that much from now on.

Košice City State - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

Flag of the Košice City State from the Sparrow Avengers universe. The KCS is one of the few modern European city states, other ones including Danzig and Bratislava/Pressburg, or the now-defunct Free State of Fiume. Košice is the capital city and principal territory of the state, in the former Abov county.

The flag is inspired by an OTL flag of Košice.

Abov-Turňa Domain (a de facto protectorate of the Košice City State) - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

Flag of the Abov-Turňa Domain (ATD) from the Sparrow Avengers universe.

The chaotic years that followed the collapse of Austria-Hungary ("The Disunion Wars") and the resulting fallout in the form of the entire region's balkanization (led by various offshoots of the Regionalist Movement) had left the territory of the former Abov-Turňa/Abaúj-Torna county between a rock and a hard place.

Unlike most other successor states and statelets, it was a historical and administrative region that, outside of Košice, had virtually no cities and very little in the way of bigger towns. The same problem occured with its industrial base and future economic prospects. But the livelihoods of the region weren't the only issue. Another one was the exact political status. With no local power base strong enough to form a coherent central government, Abov-Turňa cautiously awaited the pretenders to its humble throne. After the Košice City State's military campaign against the Hungarian Reds (backed by secret reinforcements from the newly procclaimed Kingdom of Gemer and official reinforcements from the League of Nations) proved succesful, the issue of the future fate of the Abov-Turňa territories finally arose.

While the purge of the Reds in Hungary by monarchist and nationalist forces was still continuing, admiral Horthy and other members of his provisional government knew they had little time to spare if they wanted to sort out the demarcation lines of the Disunion Wars in a way that was favourable to the renewed Motherland. Though troubled by the emergence of the new statelets and their eeking out of territory from the former counties, the new Hungarian gov realized all too well that an aggressive landgrab would not work anytime soon. A concession to "those crazed regionalist rebels" would have to be made. Nevertheless, a gesture of "showing the flag" would be required as well. After a lengthy and exhaustive campaign of intimidation and crackdown on regionalist resistance cells by the rump remains of the honvédség, the southern third of Abov/Abaúj was fully reintegrated into the post-war Hungarian state. Phase 1 had ended, phase 2 would immediately follow: Pretend that a landgrab is imminent and wait for how the new governments to the north and the LoN diplomats will react. In this Brave New Central Europe of the early 1920s, scheming, ruses and subterfuge were often more useful than any display of brute power.

The shoddy alliance of a dozen of local Abov-Turňa government councils were not thrilled when hearing of the news about "the reclamation". Despite repeated appeals to the Košice City State's government, even with the help of LoN ambassadors, the KCS refused the idea of taking over the city's surrounding region wholesale, merging it with itself to form a far larger new country. After weeks of fruitless attempts at convincing the stubborn and somewhat snobbish city slickers, the KCS finally caved in after increasing pressure from Horthy's government, the LoN and the KOG's ruling Andrássy family ("You know, having Torna and a chunk of western Abaúj wouldn't be too shaby..."). The debate took two more weeks, but reached a favourable conclusion. New national borders were finally agreed upon and set up. "Rebel Abov-Turňa" received its long-awaited new political status. It was declared independent. But not entirely, erm, "sovereign independent"... Due to the KCS unwillingness to relinquish its already existing statehood and annex new territory, the KCS was made "the official overseer and automatic ally of Abov-Turňa, which will be henceforth known as the Abov-Turňa Domain (official name chosen at the request of the KCS government)".

So, what about the Abov-Turňa Domain of today, the late 1930s ? While nominally an independent country, it is:
- de iure "a successor statelet of Austria-Hungary in free association with the Košice City State", as decreed and signed in the 1921 Central European Emergency Charter of the League of Nations ;)
- de facto little more than a well-run protectorate of the Košice City State (because "domain" is a lot lovelier word for such a scary-sounding concept, right ? ;))

Even nearly 20 years afterward, the political status of the Abov-Turňa Domain remains fairly unique. On one hand, it hasn't prevented the country from becoming a multiparty democracy and from prospering and further developing on an economic, social, cultural and even military level (indeed, the national administration prides itself with its impressive little air force just as often as with its schools and libraries). On the other hand, despite what any public speech or official statement might tell you, the Domain remains in a kind of geopolitical limbo. As far as major military, domestic and foreign policies are concerned, it's the government of the KCS that's really pulling the strings behind the well-meaning facade of the ATD national administration. ;) And, when it comes to playing the role of benefactor and ally, the Andrássy family and their Kingdom of Gemer are no slouches either...

The flag and national coat of arms incorporate the colours and charges from the coat of arms of the former Abov-Turňa/Abaúj-Torna country.

Spiš Republic - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

The flag of the Spiš Republic from my Sparrow Avengers universe. The Spiš Republic was one of the earliest unilaterally declared successor statelets that cropped up after the demise of Austria-Hungary and the Disunion Wars that followed it (being an offshoot of the post-WWI chaos that engulfed Eurasia in the late 1910s and early 1920s). In the interwar period, it was one of the more industrially advanced states in east Slovakia.

Unfortunately from a vexilological POV, the OTL coat of arms for the former Spiš county had a very dynamic evolution and became rather busy in later centuries (mirroring the county's unusually complex inner boundaries and convoluted administrative history). Still, despite its complexity, it's been an accepted symbol for the region since the 18th-19th century. The tincture employed within it made for interesting source material when designing the bars and fields of the flag itself. The bars were made deliberately irregular, to mirror the already existing variation pattern employed in the flag's main four fields (these fields always have a tincture opposite to an adjacent quarter of the coat of arms). The coronet that tended to adorn the top of the Spiš coat of arms' shield was dropped by the republic, "for being both visually superfluous and politically superfluous to the needs of the republic's national and governmental insignia".

(I had to scratch-build the entire coat of arms, as there is no "cleaned-up" modern version of it, only the surviving higher resolution 19th century illustrations. One major change I was forced to do to the coat of arms due to space limitations and composition, was flipping the black/sable chamois-growing-from-the-crown to the right, despite the correct way of orienting that figure being to the left (i.e., the same as with the lion, while the unicorn on the blue/azure field is correctly oriented to the right, as it should be). I'm not entirely satisfied with how the unicorn-growing-from-the-crown came out (he's just oddly hanging there), but again, it was due to space limitations.)

Transcarpathian Republic - textured version / national coat of arms / air force roundel

Transcarpathia is synonymous with Carpathian Ruthenia and the eastern half of the former Ung county of the Kingdom of Hungary.

A republic of mostly western Ukrainians and Rusyns, mostly Orthodox and Greek Catholic citizens, with ethnic minorities of Hungarians, Slovaks, Jews, some Czechs and Poles, and religious minorities of Roman Catholics, Jews and Protestants.

Prussian Socialist Republic 2.png

Flag for a Socialist Prussia! I got the idea to make this flag after learning of East Germany's Prussian traditions. The Prussian Socialist Republic is a one party state, with a monarch as a puppet figurehead, combining both Monarchist and Socialist traditions. Obviously the two ideologies don't make too much sense together, but hey, I liked the idea.

I've heard that Western Canada seperatism is apparently on the rise again (Like father like son, eh, Justin?)
Anyways, no clue if that'll go anywhere or if this Wexit movement will die within a few weeks
but in the off chance they succeed and secede, here's my take for a Western Canada flag

Using the Canadian flag as a template for the proportions, but altering the colors so we have green for forests and plains and blue for rivers and lakes

Four stars in the middle, one for each of the provinces in this hypothetical country (sorry territories), with a Maple Leaf in the middle, keeping some measure of Canadian-ness while still being distinct

Personally I think if there's a Wexit they need a better name. I read a future history novel where the region was called Athabasca. In the novel it was a giant US state but the principle is the same.

Thought I'd post a few flags I recently made for the 4 kingdoms of Scotland. I tried to make them as different as possible as other flags i.e. staying away from saltires and tricolours as much as possible.

Pictland (Most of North and North East Scotland)
Design based on the common Pictish artwork known as Z Rod and Double Disc which appears on numerous ancient stones in Pictland.
The colours are based on the earthy tones available from nature in this area and the blue on the discs represents the dye used in the Pictish tattoos.

pictland_page-0001.jpg

Dal Riata (Parts of Northern Ireland, Argyll and the southern isles off Scotlands west coast)
Green is the fertile land of Dal Riata, the orange represents the 2 main parts on Ireland & Scotland, and the blue is the water joining the 2 lands.

dalriata_page-0001.jpg

Bernicia (The Lothians and Borders with some territory in Northumberland)
Based on the the existing Northumbrian county flag (bottom half) but with the sun, the symbol of the Lothians included
bernicia_page-0001.jpg

Alt Clud / Strathclyde (South Western Scotland but centred around the Firth of Clyde and the river valley)
The ecclesiastical centre of Govan was created by St Columba during one of his many journeys, this flag is based on the Christianity that St Columba introduced.
The blue is for the blessed water that removes sin, the white is cleansing of the soul with the water, the cross with circle is based on a traditional Celtic-style cross and the dove is the symbol of St Columba.

Hope you all like them.
