Oh I Wish I Was in Dixie: A Different North America

I'm really impressed of how you got answers for everything you're asked about TTL, even relatively obscure things or people like Fats Domino and Dr John (I considered putting Professor Longhair among the mentioned musicians, but I decided he was too obscure). Have you planned it before or do you "improvise", so to say?
For almost all the questions I'm asked, I just make most of it up on the spot.

How's Algeria treated as part of France?
Currently it's officially treated similarly to how French Guiana is treated IRL. But Algeria does have a past of large anti-colonial movements and violence, and nowadays there are occasional terrorist attacks and large scale protests against the French government but not nearly to the extent there was in the mid-late 20th century.

As awesome as this map is, I can't help but notice that Liberia has no name label next to it.
Yeah I accidentally uploaded the wrong map initially. Fixed now.

2020 Portuguese Election
2020 Kingdom of Portugal General Election
fqd6ZIZ.png

The Portuguese general election of 2020 was held on 18 May 2020. All 214 seats to the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of the Portuguese Parliament) were at stake.

The incumbent center-right Progressive Party (PP) led by Prime Minister José Ribau Esteves, who became Prime Minister in 2019 following the retirement of Manuela Ferreira Leite, was able to keep their status as largest party in the Parliament despite their large drop in seats, but the party did lose the majority it won in the 2012 and 2016 elections.

The PP lost most of their seats to the resurgent center-left Democratic People's Party (PPD) who doubled their seat share after their very poor showing in the 2016 election. Only three months before the election and faced with dismal opinion polls, the PPD ousted their leader Francisco Assis and replaced him with former Prime Minister Carlos César.

The PPD's resurgence also damaged the left-wing Socialist Party (PS) led by Maria das Dores Meria. After their best showing in decades in 2016, PS lost 3 of their seats to the PPD.

Two small parties also had gains with the center-right/right Movement for Democracy (MpD) doubling their seat share up to eight seats in the chamber. The Ecological "Green" Party (PEV) also doubled their seat share gaining one seat in Setúbal and keeping their leader's seat in Penha de França.

The biggest losers of the election were the Liberal Inititive (LI) who won 5 seats in 2016 in what was a bit upset at the time. However, in 2020, the party saw their vote share collapse and lost all of seats in the Parliament.

Following the election, the PP would enter into a coalition with the MpD to form a government with Esteves as Prime Minister and Portas as Deputy Prime Minister.

I’m loving this! Also nice to see someone else who makes some of their stuff up on the spot lmao. Not the best question, I know, but how do you make such good congressional district maps, especially given how yours are different from those OTL? Can’t wait to read more!

So there was no Fascist Dictatorship in Portugal ITTL? And what happened to the Portuguese Communist Party?
Yes, Portugal manages to go throughout the entire 20th century without falling into dictatorship, and the 1910 Rebellion is unsuccessful and the monarchy heavily democratizes by the 30's. The Communist Party eventually just faded into irrelevance while the Socialist Party never moved towards the center, so the PS sort of fills the Communist Party's role in current Portuguese politics (which is why their leader is an IRL member of the PCP).

For all the IRL USA ones I use Dave's Redistricting Atlas to make all the districts and then trace them to make the maps. There isn't anything like that for outside the US that I've found which is why I usually do proportional elections for countries outside the US. For the Portuguese one, however, I used municipal boundaries and combined them to make the districts, and when that didn't match up well enough I either split municipalities by guessing or used parish-level data.

Was "Back To The Future" ever a movie ITTL?
If not, than what happened to the following people:
Michael J. Fox
Christopher Lloyd
Crispin Glover

Hey, just a few random questions that came up over the course of my reading:

1. Did Edward VIII's reign go differently, especially considering Wallis Simpson was a subject of the British crown?
2. Are there noble titles/knighthoods/peerages for Commonwealth of America citizens?
3. Did John Connally switch from Liberal to Democratic prior to his presidency? IIRC he was a close confidante to LBJ IRL.
4. What have Bill Clinton and Al Gore been doing post-retirement?

Back to the Future is still made with the same people and plot though its production and release was troubled largely due to the 1984-85 Writer's Strike. The movie does eventually get released though with a much more disappointing box office result. The movie did become a cult classic several years after release, and the sequel does not come until 1994.

4. What have Bill Clinton and Al Gore been doing post-retirement?
1. Edward VIII still steps down in the 30's due to Simpson's divorces becoming a major scandal in British society, so today Elizabeth II is still the Queen.
2. America has a similar separate system for knighthood and peerages that Canada does IRL.
3. Connally was always a Democrat, but he famously became good friends with Johnson when they served in the Senate together. Once Johnson was elected President, Connally actually became one of Johnson's allies in the Senate. But, Connally was in favor of putting term limits on the presidency, and when Johnson announced his third run for the presidency, the two began to drift apart politically.
4. Gore has been pretty active politically since he left the presidency mostly in environmental issues, and Unionists have tried to get him to run again for Senator in Tennessee multiple times now but he has rejected all these requests. Clinton has mostly kept a lower profile and only comes forward for things like the Party Conventions. Though his most notable action since leaving office was in 2009 when he lobbied heavily for fellow Arkansan Blanche Lincoln to be elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate.
What's Ben Folds up to ITTL?
Folds is a fairly successful solo musician in Dixie, and he has reached a somewhat higher level of fame that he has reached IRL.

Hawaii Federalism Referendum
Hawaii Federalism Referendum
Hawaii Referendum Wiki.png

The Kingdom of Hawaii federalism referendum took place on 5 June 2020 in the Kingdom of Hawaii to ask the electorate whether the country should remain a unitary state or become of federation of 4 constituent provinces. The result would then be facilitated through the Federation Referendum Act 2020. The referendum resulted in 51.9% of the votes cast being in favor of becoming a federation. Although the referendum was legally non-binding, the government led by Prime Minister Mazie Hirono promised to implement the result.

Following the 2019 Hawaiian General Election, the Alliance for Hawaii and United! entered into a coalition, but United demanded that the Alliance support a referendum on federalism in order of United to join the coalition. Prime Minister Hirono acquiesced and set the referendum date on June 5.

Even though the Alliance allowed the referendum to take place, the party opposed its passage and supported the No Campaign. The Reform Party also favored No and asked its supporters to vote No in the referendum. United! and the Independence Party, even though were against each other on most issues, had both made federalism a central tenant of their platforms and both heavily supported the Yes Campaign. The Democratic Party had no official stance on the referendum though many of their members voiced support for the referendum, most notably the Oahu Democratic Party, who endorsed the Yes Campaign as they believed the Democratic Party could wield more influence in an Oahu Provincial Government rather than the National Parliament.

On June 5, the Yes Campaign won by 3.7% in the final results with Yes doing the best on Kaua'i and Ni'ihau where it received over 2/3 of the vote. No did the best in downtown Honolulu and on Hawai'i where it won by 13%.

Following the results, Hirono faced some calls to step down as Prime Minister, but she stated she would remain as PM and immediately begin drafting and negotiating the legislation to federate the Kingdom. The most important question remaining involved what specific powers the provinces would have separate from the federal government.

This is a really great timeline! I'm curious how different the Great War was ITTL? The South German Confederation seems to be a result of it, is the North German Confederation the original, or was it also formed after the Great War?

This is perhaps the most interesting independent South timeline not related to the Confederate States of America (CSA). It's pretty well done.
