Welcome to the new thread !

If you have any civil aviation or air forces related roundels, markings and other emblems from timelines and alternate worlds you'd like to share with others in the Maps and Graphics Forum, this is the thread for you. The older two threads have run their course and haven't been updated in years, so I think the time has come to consider those two archived and move onto a brand new thread. May it serve at least as well as the previous two threads, or the many flag, coat of arms or map focused threads in this forum.

Whether your designs will include cockades of several colours or more unusual shapes and designs, feel free to share your roundels here.

Remember: As in the real world, the simpler and clearer the design of an air force emblem, the easier it is to identify friendly or enemy aircraft.

Thank you for contributing, Gokbay. :)

I like the idea of the thread but not sure how much traction it can get. I will try to make something for it thought.

If the previous two were able to gain traction, so will this one. Beginnings are difficult. We need to keep posting and give it time. If you know of any flag-makers or aviation image makers here on the site who like making roundels, you can point them to this thread. ;)

I've decided to repost some of my existing alternate history roundels, in more of a compilation. I'll focus on my Sparrow Avengers setting first.

Roundels of the Czech-Moravian-Silesian Republic.

The first variant represents the historically first roundel of the CMSR and is known colloquially as the pětuhelník ("pentagon"),

The second variant was introduced in the early-to-mid 1930s and was an entirely new version of the air force roundel. Still in use in the 2010s.

sliezske-kr%C3%A1%C4%BEovstvo-png.206661

Roundel of the Kingdom of Silesia, an interwar era monarchy and later constituent country of the Confederation of Polish Peoples.

falangistick%C3%A9-sliezsko-png.206662

Roundel of the Falangist Free State of Silesia, an authoritarian regime and puppet state of falangist Germany, established after the overthrow of the Silesian monarchy in the 1930s. After the defeat of the falangist countries in the second world war, the monarchy was reestablished and the country returned to its pre-coup flag and air force roundel.

Allow me to contribute a little more.

From the same Timeline as my other post in this thread:
Peoples Air Army Roundel (West France).png

Roundel of the West French (French Socialist Republic) Air Force (officially the People's Army of Air as opposed to East France's, Actionist French State's and 3rd Republic's Armée de l'Air ). Based on both the OTL and ITTL Roundel of Armée de l'Air (colours) and the OTL roundel of East Germany (shape). Distinguished from East French (4th Republic) Air Force by shape.
Ottoman (later Turkish) Imperial Air Force roundel.png

Roundel of the Ottoman and later Turkish Imperial Air Forces. OTL roundel of the Turkish Air Force until the 70s (thought I made this specific image). While the Ottoman Empire was neutral in TTL's WW1 (and as such this roundel probably wouldn't be created however I have disregarded that). (all of the image is the roundel while the rest I posted had background (MS Paint, not sure how I can find a way to fix it. Might edit them to change the background to grey))
Russian Imperial Air Force roundel.png

Roundel of the Russian Imperial Air Force (Russian Naval Aviation has a different roundel however). ITTL Russian Empire was Allied to German Empire in WW1 and therefore OTL Russian tricolour based cockade wasn't adopted (It and RAF adopted it because they were allied to France while RAF also had the reason that the roundel they were using (Union Jack) could be mistaken for the German Iron Cross). Since Russia was allied to German Empire they adopted a cross. The design was based on the cross of the Order of St. George (a military decoration/medal) while the colours were based on the ribbon of the medal.

Roundel of the Britannic Union (Union of Britannic Syndicalist Commonwealths) Air Force from my "the Tsar, the Kaiser and a Springtime Revolution" timeline concept. The Soviet Union equivalent is that Timeline.

Will not post it since it is OTL but ITTL various British Royal Air Forces (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and UK-in-Exile) would officially continue using the OTL the RAF roundel (aka the one I posted here but without the cog, book and compass symbol). All but the UK-in-Exile would also have their own roundels (like OTL RCAF, RAAF, RNZAF etc.) but the Empire-in-Exile/the Commonwealth was integrated enough during TTLs Cold War that using the same symbol was not a problem. All those air forces use the roundel that British planes in the Pacific used in WW2 (the RAF roundel with the red circle removed). After the end of the Cold War, dissolution of UBSC, restoration of the United Kingdom and other stuff that happened around that time specific RAF symbols with their specific central red symbols would fully enter practice. Especially since while still closely allied the Commonwealth has somewhat drifted apart with politics of specific nations getting influenced by the ex-communist parts after reunification.

Current day Australia, New Zealand, Canada and UK would have identical to OTL roundels but I will probably make a few of roundels for the airforces that were either directly under UK-in-Exile, UBSC or South Africa (which is different from OTL ones, thought only very slightly different from a specific one).

Visegrad Union (VU) roundels from the decades after the second world war, in my Sparrow Avengers TL.

Roundels used by Visegrad Defence Pact (VDP) military aircraft.

v%C3%BDsostn%C3%BD-znak-vop-variant-2-png.528891

Standard version

v%C3%BDsostn%C3%BD-znak-vop-n%C3%ADzka-vidite%C4%BEnos%C5%A5-png.528892

Low visibility version

Examples of VDP roundel and national roundel use on a jet fighter used by Visegrad Union member states.

As in the case of OTL aircraft in the service of NATO having a NATO star somewhere around the nose area, each VDP aircraft carries this smaller roundel in addition to its specific national roundel. The stylised castle comes from the central emblem of the Visegrad Union, the parent organisation of the VDP. The castle is simplified for the purposes of the VDP roundels, though.

More concerned about concealment than identification, the Ilmavoimat had toned-down the white disc background of their markings in late 1943, adopting a dull blue-grey disk. This was replaced from April, 1944 by Luftwaffe-inspired black and white swastikas, with solid black emblems applied to underwing and to fuselage sides and white outline swastikas to wing tops.

SAAF F4U-1A, Okinawa (https://www.deviantart.com/sport16ing/art/SAAF-F4U-1A-Okinawa-687044119) - For the Pacific theatre, the SAAF adopted a modified national marking, the blue, white and orange roundel being flanked by American style white bars. When the overall midnight blue finish was adopted in February, 1945, the white from the roundel was dropped and the blue assumed by the midnight blue. The fin flash was reduced to a single, orange vertical bar. The Fleet Air Arm were making similar stylistic concessions to the British roundel and fin flash for operations in the Pacific on midnight blue camouflaged Corsairs, Hellcats and Helldivers at around the same time.

From the same "the Tsar, the Kaiser and a Springtime Revolution" timeline concept. The Air force roundels of the rest of Istanbul Pact (Ottoman Commonwealth, basically):
(Note: Azerbaijan is in Istanbul Pact Economic Area and has a special military/political relationship with the European Council like the rest of Istanbul Pact but is not a full member of the Pact and was not under Ottoman control in recent times anyway. Ottoman Turkey is a full member of the European Council and European Cooperative Organization. All but Egypt are in personal union with Turkey (Egypt became a republic in the 70s). All roundels are based on the above Ottoman/Turkish one.)
Algerian Air Force roundel.png

Roundel of Algeria. Algeria was reclaimed by Ottoman Empire after WW2 and an Algerian flag was adopted based on the colonial coat of arms. Algeria became independent as an Ottoman dominion together with Egypt in 1963. The air force roundel was adopted at the same time.
Egyptian Air Force roundel.png

The current Egyptian Air Force roundel was adopted following Egypt becoming a republic and adopting a new flag. The flag was the third to use all the Pan-Arab colours (red, white, black and green). This flag featured alongside a red-white-black tricolour the flag of the independent Kingdom of Egypt (1917-1939) in a chevron. The new roundel used the colours and put the Egptian Crescent and Three Stars in the center (distinct from the red flags of the Khedivate and the 1963-1973 Ottoman Dominion). It was still an Ottoman styled square however.
Hjazi-Levantine Air Force roundel.png

Current Air Force roundel of Hejaz-Levant, an Ottoman Dominion that gained independence in 1965. Its flag is the OTL flag of Hejaz from 1920-1926. This is its second roundel as it was changed to include the triangle in 1970 with the Independence of the Union of Arab States.
Union of Arab States Air Force roundel.png

Roundel of the Union of Arab States and the former roundel of Hejaz-Levant. UAS is an Ottoman dominion that gained independence in 1970. The Ottoman Sultan as the head of state (styled President) is the most powerful here when compared to in all his realms. It is a federation of three federations; Iraq, Jabal Shammar-Haasa and South Arabia. Of these South Arabia consists of a significant number of local monarchies while Iraq and Jabal Shammar-Haasa do not have sub-monarchs. Sultan of Muscat and Oman is the most powerful and as such the President of South Arabia. The flag of the UAS is the OTL flag of the UAE but upside down (or with the black and green having changed places when compared to UAE).

Can be seen as the continuation of the above post.
Royal South African Air Force roundel.png

Roundel of the Royal South African Air Force. Mostly identical to the OTL South African roundel from 1947-1958, with the difference being that the antelope is red instead of orange. ITTL the (Dominion) Union of South Africa was turned into the (Dominion) Federation of Southern Africa, integrating the Rhodesias and Bechuanaland (all three became dominions in 1923) into it, in 1925 (Britain was giving basically all of Africa dominion status to keep the Empire together after the British Isles were falling/had fallen to a communist revolution). After the Britannic-British War of 1939-1940 FSA (now short the Free State and Transvaal) would become a republic. This would change after the 1946-1947 South African War, where South Africa did reclaim the Boer States and annex Lesotho and Swaziland but lost the Rhodesias and Botswana to UBSC. British Empire-in-Exile's first nuclear test in 1948 stopped the Britannic Union from taking the rest of South Africa. South Africa would restore the British monarchy, abolish Apartheid and adopt this roundel in 1950. South Africa remains a monarchy to this day.
Royal Malaysian(-Pacifican) Air Fore Roundel.png

This roundel is the courtesy of @Marc Pasquin with a very small edit to the colours from me. It was the the roundel of Royal Malaysia-Pacifica Air Force (a British Dominion that was established from the areas under United Kingdom-in-Exile rule (aka that were not Dominions already) when the Britannic Union was fully dissolved and the United Kingdom restored in Great Britain and some overseas territories (Gibraltar and a lot of smallish Islands)) from its creation in 1992 to 2011 (when it was divided into Malaysia and Pacifica. There are also three more dominions that were formerly a part of Malaysia-Pacifica (and also Aceh but that is not a dominion)). Afterwards it has continued to see use as the roundel of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (larger than OTL and a dominion, Still has its OTL elective monarchy but for the position of Governor-General ITTL. Singapore is the capital of Malaysia and served as the capital of the UK-in-exile before that).
New England AF roundel.png

Roundel of the New England Air Force (New England also includes the four maritime provinces of Canada). Was a part of the Britannic Union (annexed after WW2) and based its roundel on the Britannic Union Air Force roundel. Since New England is a part of the Commonwealth the similarity to the Dominions and UK is mostly not seen as a problem. There are some calls to adopt a more American inspired roundel but They have not really gained any traction.

Note: Probably need to create an index (and maybe even a full thread) for all my "the Tsar, the Kaiser and a Springtime Revolution" things.

In a Timeline called 'Westminster's Failure', the Imperial Conference did not offer as much autonomy as expected for the dominions. Frustration grew until the 50s so that the offer of an Imperial Union was rejected and the dominions declared their sovereignty, leading to the end of the british empire in any shape or forms.

below are the roundels used by the republics of Canada, Australia and New Zealand

roundels-non-british.png

From an ATL I've in my mind for years (still unfinished), but among the changes: The nuclear bomb is delayed and Japan doesn't surrender. (sry for crappy roundels - where done in 5 minutes or less :p - plus even crappier story)

Italian squadron.png

The Kingdom of Italy issued an declaration of war to the Empire of the Japan on 14 of July of 1945. The purpose of this act, was mainly to persuade the Allies that the new government of Italy deserved to be invited to the San Francisco Peace Conference, as a reward for its co-belligerence. However, the British and Americans weren't supportive of this idea. Therefore In return, Alberto Tarchiani (Ambassador to Washington) asked to the crown Prince Umberto (de facto ruler of Italy since its father, Victor Emmanuel III, only retains the title of King), to speak to both Truman and Atlee to persuade them to support the force. Luck would have it, Typhoon Louis damaged several equipment that forced Operation Olympic to be postponed by two weeks, and President Truman launched the now called "UN Help", as he requested help for several United Nations members to support the Allied Nations against Empire of Japan and it's puppet allies. Prince Umberto took the opportunity and joined the several others UN members to support the defeat of Japan. Althrought not a popular move by the Italian population, it was just composed mostly of volunteers (and armed forces "unwanted") and where paid extra, all equiped and trained by the British Armed Forces.

Most of the Italian support went to the Burma campaign, with an infantry brigade, an tank battalion (equiped with M5 Stuarts and M3 Lee/Grants) and a fighter squadron. The fighter squadron was formed as the No.348 (Italian) Squadron in mid-September of 1945, equiped with P-47D-25 Thunderbolts (from formed RAF squadrons as they replaced their Thunderbolts with Tempests II). Unlike some of the foreign squadrons of the government in exiles, the squadron was formed with their government still in power, therefore, with more power on their "expeditionary forces", and one of the demands where identifications to represent the Italians in the Pacific War. The choosen roundel where an basic RAF SEAC roundel with the blue replaced with green (also been used by their tank battalion). All three forces where send into action on Operation Broadsword (liberation of northern malaysia). The only Italian contribution to Operation Downfall was an Transport Flight of C-47 Skytrains, based in Okinawa (with the green "SEAC" roundel)

France.png

As France began to send aircrafts squadrons to the Pacific, one of the small problems they faced was, how will their replace their roundel (De Gaulle didn't want to use just the blue of the normal roundel as it was to similar to the British SEAC, and red was out of the question). The solution: replaced their roundels with a blue Cross de Lorraine.

PT.png
(the worse of the three :p)
Joining the war after the Serpa Pinto incident, on 29 of May of 1944, Portugal send several small tokens of armed forces to to Australia, where they where trained for operations in Burma, Timor (Oboe 7) and even Honshu. As with many nations participating in the Pacific, Portugal had to replace their red "cross of christ" with a blue one.
